  • Hello and welcome to the episode - today I'm going to show you how to get your motorcycle ready for winter riding, I'm going to be using my 2022 royal Enfield interceptor as an example. In this video I will be covering, front brake pad maintenance as well has rear pad maintenance, covering the bike with long lasting anti corrosion sprays that will keep your bike resilient to harsh weather conditions and road salt.

    One of the most tricky and corrosion prone areas on the 650 are the stock exhaust header fins. Anything oily will either get burnt off or baked on. I’ve taken to polishing them with Autosol using a tooth brush handle and rag, then giving them a light brush with XCF. I run the bike briefly and wipe any remaining residue off.

    You are producing some of the best diy motorcycle videos available. As an automotive engineer for almost fifty years I have started to recommend that apprentices watch them.     I don't usually make comments on TH-cam but having just viewed your apology vid, thought I ought to re this very helpful one on Winter Prep. I am mechanically able and have checked and adjusted the valves on my Inty 650. The dealer didn't check them on 1st service so I did them myself. The point is this, I could not have got the brake pads out to check as the pin was so tight and so I had given up until I found your video. I just needed someone to show me how and your extremely well filmed and calm voice explaining the process gave me the encouragement to have another go. The rear was awkward due to upswept exhaust so close to to able to tap the pin out without risk of scratching the chrome. It was a pig to remove and probably would be easier if silencer was removed. So thank you again for this upload. All the best for your future projects.

    Aiways use the muc off products, its quick and great results, not used the winter barrier spray before, so will give it a go on my commute bike. I use a pet dryer for getting the water out, great results, the only thing i do differently is after cleaning and lubing chain, put a small drop of acf 50 on a rag and wipe over outer edge of chain so it shines, making sure not to get lube off the inner part of chain, 20,000 miles later still have original chain and sprockets, great vid as always

    Thanks Nick, really good video, I've not really looked at the brakes in detail before on the Interceptor so always assumed it would be calipers off to change the pads, a bit like a car I guess - so that's really good to know!
    With regard to cleaning, I use pretty much what you do (mainly Muc-Off stuff) although I use Autoglym UHD wax for the tank and painted plastics and a mixture of Mothers metal polish and whatever chrome cleaner I have at the time because I have it all in my "car detailing" cupboard already. I used Techcote ACS200 as my "anti corrosion" product last year and it seemed to perform well - but I don't commute regularly on the bike and through the winter only tended to take the bike out on dry winter days when the temp was above freezing, so I'm not sure how good it would be if used in all weathers.

    I'm planning of readying Circe ready for winter storage. Waiting for tomorrow to do a proper washing and coating with ACF-50. Nice of you to remind me of the copper paste on the brakes. I'll bet Ttriumph forgot that stuff on the calipers.

    Very thorough explanation Nick. I am going to do this to my new Classic 350 and CB500X, despite the fact that I will hardly use the bikes over the winter, when the roads are plastered in salt. I am lucky in that I don`t need to commute on them.

      Yeah I feel I'm getting a bit past commuting on a bike, but it saves so much time with traffic.

      @@nicksepisode Yeah, it is definitely quicker but I just don`t need to use my bikes in the worst conditions, these days, so I am lucky. The Interceptor looks great, by the way.

    Hi Nick/Jodie. I have just gone back to a scooter until I decide which bike to get again. Its a 2012 honda sh300 2000 miles, bought it on e bay without viewing. (Stupid) but 2000 miles 10 yrs old looked lovely. When I got it I was horrified. Both brakes were stuck on but the corrosion is un believable. On every metal part totally oxidised, the swing arm and forks will need removing. The owner must have left
    T it outside permanently. When I stripped the brakes wasn’t one sign of copper grease. Pistons badly corroded. I have cleaned them as best as I could but in future will need new pistons and seals. I have removed every bolt and copper greased everyone. Think this bike which is lovely to ride will cost arm and leg to save. I wont be doing it. Will get used swing arm support and forks off e bay, plenty in Italy and France. I like to look after my bikes like u. My 21 yr old VFR had no corrosion. This honda is junk.as my nc750x which was 6 months old when I bought but neglected over 1 winter. That too was badly corroded.ur regime is mega important with our climate and quality of modern machines. My 6 month old nc had corrosion in many places particularly the swing arm.

      That's why I like to post these videos, with a little care that takes about an hour can prevent all these problems. I do agree and I'm sad to say, Honda and some other manufactures have cut back on quality, the paint is very thing on some vital areas (ie. swing arm) This is part of why I purchased the RE, the paint is so thick, and I believe they are at the stage of building quality bikes to increase there growing reputation of quality motorcycles, passion is put into them rather than focusing on profits.

    I used XPC anti-corrosion spray for metal parts and muc-off miracle shine for tank and paintwork. I wanted to clean the bike few times through the winter but of course it didn't happen :/ I think it worked pretty well what I've done.

    I spray all chrome with WD40 before the bike/car is stored for the winter. Never had rust issues in 20+ years.

      Mines stainless so it will be OK, you can use the muc off stuff on them tho

    I'm so close to pushing the button on one of these (orange crush). The only thing stopping me is I don't have a garage, it would be stored outside with just a cover to protect from the elements, and the shiny bits worry me!

      Mine isn't garaged either, don't let it put you off honestly, I use mine in all weathers, no signs of any rust, the frame and parts are heavily painted. Spokes are stainless too.

      Oxford stromex, I'd wouldn't use anything other than this, next best thing if you don't have a garage. It's expensive but it's quilt lined too. I belive it's better than keeping it in a garage because you get good air flow around the bike and no condensation build up.

    Did you say you won't wash the bike over the winter? Do you ride it in the wet & does the protection not get washed off?

      Washing it with sudz will remove it, rain won't so I probably won't was it.
