- Shortoff Mountain is the southernmost point in the twelve-mile expanse of the Linville Gorge. The hike begins at Wolfpit Road near Lake James and takes you on a steep hike just over two miles to the summit. When you crest the summit, the hike flattens out and rewards you with sweeping views of the western rim of the gorge and Table Rock and Hawksbill Mountains to the north. The area is a popular spot for hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing and is a great place for single-day or overnight trips. Another portion of Shortoff Mountain, called the Olson Trail, is an unmarked spur off the main trail known as a "social trail." Following it will take you under the main cliffs and through a cool cave area known as John's Kitchen.
Awesome video, Cathy! I've been to Shortoff twice, once from Wolfpit and once part of a dayhike from Table Rock to Pinnacle. It's gorgeous! You captured it beautifully in this video.
