AWESOME. I am impressed . I am finally able to start back up my tanks that haven't been up in a long time. I' had no idea why i couldn't get one or two out of a lot of different species to breed and now i know why! that water change is key, cold water change. Thanks for your video and your tips!
Can you make a video of one of your pairs together and show a physical difference between a male and female? My dad and I have had African Cichlids for years and we can't figure out the exact difference between them. We want to breed some but we can't figure the male to female ratio out...
seen a video on your 125 set up was that polystyrene on the bottom inside or out side of tank ? and if on inside what kind is it and wear did you get or recommend i'm in the states. Keep up the Great videos Thanks Neil
Looks like I am using the same tank as you a Rio 400, only started on the Mnumba a couple of months ago , this large tank and water changes are causing me problems due to a disability, I have been changing about 20ltrs daily , but I like your idea of a hose straight from the tap and 50% weekly, I could then siphon straight out to the garden, my only concern is , does this large water change with pure tap water not kill off the filter bacteria ? Thanks for any advice on making things easier.
awsome video i took your advice, changed my set up around, good feed of brine shrimp a little cool fresh water and 2 days later i got a female hap with a mouth full of eggs...
@bolly12345 haha at first i thought you were having a moment of moody contemplation. hows the planted tank coming along, did you manage to stop the bba invasion? since ive got the co2 levels stabilized in my tank and at a good level the bba i had has started to melt away, just grabbed a second co2 setup on ebay last night, £30 for the whole setup including 4.5kg refillable cylinder
Hi Mark, I need your advice, I have 20 convict cichlid which are equally divided in 2 tanks. They can breed in community or can I give seperate tank for each pair.
Everything that people told me about african cichlids is opposite of this. I trust this guy more then the clerks selling me the fish. Truth is I have two big beautiful tanks and I been trying to breed cichlids but I have been having trouble. I will try doing what this video says and il post back. Mean while if anybody has any sugestions please share them thanks.
hey i am still trying to decide exactly what kind of africans i want to get i want to breed some colorfull ones i have a 50-55 gallon tank it is about 4 feet in length so im thinking about electric yellow labs what do you think the ratio for me would be? I have some vids up you can check out my tank setup and maybe that will help.
iv owned chichlids for may years and bow i want to breed. i have a large 5 ft fishtank and would like to breed 4 to 5 specials of chichlids. could i put pieces of glass inside my 5ft tank to split it into 4 seprate tanks ? would this be good
hi nice idea with the mirror i had an idea 25 years ago about me carp fishing ..attatch a mirror to the lead then wen the carp comes up to the bait hes dosnt hesitate hes takes the bait because he thinks another fish is goin to av it nice touch
can you help or advise me i have 2 adult male yellow labs and 5 females i woud only class one female as a adult @ 4 inch the others are only 2 inch and they are breeding and one is ready to have her fry any of the days is it common for a young female to be holding at a young age and will she still grow after she has her fry for the first time. Love your channel i didn't relise you are from only over the pond untill i seen your one on one with Rick
sorry if you said this in the video but i'm in a rush atm. but can (example) a male jewel cichlid breed with a female bumblebee, kennyi and/or a electric yellow or do they only breed to the same type? also are they life breeders, so they keep the same partner for their entire lives or whom ever? thank you if you can help me, please :)
Hi I have 4 different male peacock cichlids. 1. Blue Neon Cichlid 2. Red Shoulder peacock 3. Dragon Blood 4. Electric Blue Do I have to buy female for each individual male? Buy Electric Blue female for Electric Blue male? Or I just buy about 20 one type female for all? I will appreciate your answer Thanks
Very nice tank mark , I've had my tank for a while but even with regular water changes and not over feeding I still have cloudy water any tips to help me thanks
A new rockscape always gets my fish to spawn. Never added cold tap water to tank. Adding more epsom salts in a water changed has got my tank into breeding mode too,
Greetings! I have started up a tank (40 gal) that I could afford. I have a male Sunshine peacock who is coloring up more everyday. I also 4 peacocks I bought unsexed supposedly and I was told they are close to 1 yr in age and all smaller than the male. He does a lot of chasing around but nothing happens. These four juveniles square off against one another (mostly after the light is off) and get into these bouts of lip locking. Is this something immature cichlids do? Please explain! Confused!
I have a large tank of cicleds and a yellow lab had bred, and later in the year we found the last one of the liter. I named him lucky. and a little bit ago, like a couple of weeks, Luckys mother gave birth AGAIN! so many babys! At the same time, we had bought another cicled w/ babys and we have SO many babys! they come and perk around. The tank is better than what Lucky was born with. SO MANY LITTLE SMALL FISH ;3 ( I love baby fish ;3)
Hi mark i bought some african cichlids and its been 3 months only but recently my fishes start dying and yesterday i checked and i think i got some bacterial infection is going on, as i am new to the hobby and dont know much about the deceases about fish. my marble peacock has one side like a wound hole and i searched online and found it is some becterial infection and i have to cure the whole tank with the medicine named cult.
@ADDICTED2BASS1211 That's very true! As you probably might know Mbuna will try and breed with anything if they can get away with it. Thank you for your comment
I need advice asap!!! I've had jack dempsey's, two. since they were very small, also in the tank is a algee eater, all have grownup together. now all of a sudden the bigger jd is chasing and bitting even his brother and the algee eater, i'm giving them feeders. what is going on in my tank?, please help.
the p.h of my tank water is pretty stable at 7.4 and i do not add any buffers would you recomend it being higher, also what size do the cichlids have to be before you sex them and they breed?
If there is enough rockwork in the tank then you are fine leaving the female in there and she will guard the fry when she has spat them (after a month). If you dont have much rock work and the tank is very well stocked then move the female to a hospital/quantentine tank until she has reached full term and spat them. Be careful when introducing the female back to the main tank if you do it this way and rearrange the rocks when you introduce her back. Any more questions check out ThatForumSite :)
i am worried about i may lose all the fish. other thing is i change water around 30% every 3 days but my nirates are always high like 40-50 ppm any help would be appreciated ya i just added aquarium salt in it like 11 teaspoons in my rio 180 tank for the other bicterial to die as i read :)... i have two filters one is fluval 404 and other is APS 2000ef+ UV
@petegrimsby Hi Pete, Just choose species that will probably not cross breed. If you put 4 pieces of class in the tank you'll create only just over a foot for them which is not recommended buddy
i have 3 africans i picked out at lfs along with 5 brichardis n my tank, i take good care of it but its been a few months of brichardis being there and no breeding yet any ideas? and how do u sex african males cuz they are mixed at the store when u buy them? thx
i have a male and a female yellow lab or electric yellow cichlid i just reccntly found out they were breeding when i found very small babys in the gravel and the female was carrying again but she spit them in the main tank before i moved her to a different tank and since i moved her out of the breeder tank and into the main tank again she hasnt bred any tips? shes bred about 3 to 4 times that ik of but i think more than that before i started noticing the babys
i got 2 pairs of red devil cichlids and both pairs breeding and got fry how to move the mother, dad and fry from my 120gal tank to a breeder tank? The fry are already swimming......
I was wondering if it is common for a male peacock cichlid to eat about half the females eggs before she picks them up during each fertilization.I have one male ob that does this every time. The females in the tank will drop 3 or 4 eggs at once now when mating with him so they have a better chance at picking one up before he eats them. They still manage to get 30 or so but I have never seen another male do this.
Sean Black any male that is not courting the female will try to eat the eggs. this is why most (if not all) breeding projects are constricted to 1 or 2 males and maybe 4 to 6 females. mbuna breed like flies. peacocks and haps can be harder
Reid Smith It is the male that is breeding with the females that eats the eggs. The tank has only one male with 6 females.I have never seen another male do this but he eats about the first half of the total portion of eggs laid.He does this with all females in the tank.
I would recommend to get more fish, for many reasons. First of all the male will eat the fry if left in the same tank, have a lot of hiding places so the fry can hide from bigger fish. Also once a male cichlid has mated with an other cichlid he will want to keep on breeding, thus he will case the female around the tank until it will breed (which my cause the female to die). If you get more female cichlid the male has more choices giving the other females a break and a lower chance of killing it
You're best setting up a breeding tank, just remove the male after they've breed. Once the female has released the fry net them up and put them in a fry tank
@SwaggerPrettyBoy keep the female in the tank for around 28 days after she picked up the brood of eggs then strip the fry into another tank. if you take the female out of the main tank for a more than a few days the other fish will fight her when you put her back in.
I know one way to tell the difference of the sex of the fish. One way to tell if its a male or female is looking at its lower fin by the tail, you will see bright colored egg spots on the lower fin. Most of the time the male cichlid will have more egg spot then the female, or if their is no egg spot on that fin its most likely a female.
I usedtoo breed jewels what you do is make the ph about 7.9-8.1 I had 8 and you get your temperature about 75-80 and you wate one or too spawns because that will be the test drive for them
hi mate very good tips I was just wondering could you take a look at my video and hopefully let me know what my fish are male or female I have no idea thanks

my male afra hara is trying to breed with the females but the females just dont seem interested in him its only 1 male and 3 females he does the dance thing he chases them but they do nothing they are in a 55 gallon long with other African cichlids and some other little fish you got anything for me to try i do have videos of them if you can check them out and let me no if everything is all good or change something thanks and please get back to me asap
@jewelcichlids4life sand is SOOOOOO much better for ciclids. they enjoy it a lot more and you will see them "playing" with it often. i just did a gravel to sand switch..... sand is a million times better.
You can normally see a little bulge under the females mouth when she is holding eggs and if you watch for long enough and happen to see he open her mouth slightly when facing you then you can see the eggs in there. If I was you as your just starting out I would stick to only keeping African Cichlids. As mixing for example: American/south American with African Cichlids your going to run in to problems as they require different water params and a different diets. People will say it's fine to mix allsorts with African Cichlids but I bet their fish look dreadful
how long after the femaile is fat does it take for her to lay her eggs and start holding I bought 2 femailes that look like there full of eggs 2 weeks ago and they still look fat....
AWESOME. I am impressed . I am finally able to start back up my tanks that haven't been up in a long time. I' had no idea why i couldn't get one or two out of a lot of different species to breed and now i know why! that water change is key, cold water change. Thanks for your video and your tips!

Great video. At the start it kinda dragged on but in the middle you have some very good information thanks!

this was your best bacground and rocks perfect looks good.
Hey Mark do you think this would work with dwarf cichlids aswell ? most of mine lay eggs but I have one pair of mouthbrooders
@bolly12345 haha at first i thought you were having a moment of moody contemplation. hows the planted tank coming along, did you manage to stop the bba invasion?
since ive got the co2 levels stabilized in my tank and at a good level the bba i had has started to melt away, just grabbed a second co2 setup on ebay last night, £30 for the whole setup including 4.5kg refillable cylinder

hi bolly12345, im starting my first tank and i wanted to know if you could tell me what fish can go with african cichlids
lol, was there something distracting you off camera to the right at the beginning or was it a moody/arty gaze into the distance?
sorry if you said this in the video but i'm in a rush atm. but can (example) a male jewel cichlid breed with a female bumblebee, kennyi and/or a electric yellow or do they only breed to the same type? also are they life breeders, so they keep the same partner for their entire lives or whom ever? thank you if you can help me, please :)
a jewel cichlid can not breed with any of the lisyed fish. and no malawi cichkids are not lifetime partners
Hi
I have 4 different male peacock cichlids.
1. Blue Neon Cichlid
2. Red Shoulder peacock
3. Dragon Blood
4. Electric Blue
Do I have to buy female for each individual male?
Buy Electric Blue female for Electric Blue male?
Or I just buy about 20 one type female for all?
I will appreciate your answer
Thanks
no you should get three or four females for each. otherwise you will crossbreed.
@mbezik The bba was only on one little branch which I managed to remove :)
Sounds like you got a good deal.
Very nice tank mark , I've had my tank for a while but even with regular water changes and not over feeding I still have cloudy water any tips to help me thanks
Hi there, the bacteria is housed in the filter's media not in the water column :)
A new rockscape always gets my fish to spawn.
Never added cold tap water to tank. Adding more epsom salts in a water changed has got my tank into breeding mode too,
@rexlinkfish Hi, I've had a look at your tank video :) Are you planning on keeping Yellow Labs with your tropical fish?
this is awesome i really appreciate this video i am going to try to breed my cichlids soon
I have a ruby red or some call it a german red peacock, and i have had a hard time finding a mate, any advice?
the cold water works!
thanks man!
@MWEX5 Bit small for African cichlids pal, you'll need 50g upwards. In a 15g you can keep shell dwellers like Brevis
Greetings! I have started up a tank (40 gal) that I could afford. I have a male Sunshine peacock who is coloring up more everyday. I also 4 peacocks I bought unsexed supposedly and I was told they are close to 1 yr in age and all smaller than the male.

How often should the rocks be moved around if not adding fish if I'd like to see them breed?
I need advice asap!!! @thescientist282 You could try a Fluval 405 with a smaller cheaper external. I recommend the Fluval FX5
When you do water changes do you rearange the rocks?
the p.h of my tank water is pretty stable at 7.4 and i do not add any buffers would you recomend it being higher, also what size do the cichlids have to be before you sex them and they breed?
I have been trying to find out how to raise or lower the ph of the water. Would you be able to help please?

@ADDICTED2BASS1211 Yeah some LFS are a nightmare for Hybrids!
I got my wilds from Stevenage Specialist Aquatics :)
You're right about the water change, happens to me to.
They start breeding because they think the Spring/Rain time is coming.
i have a male and a female yellow lab or electric yellow cichlid i just reccntly found out they were breeding when i found very small babys in the gravel and the female was carrying again but she spit them in the main tank before i moved her to a different tank and since i moved her out of the breeder tank and into the main tank again she hasnt bred any tips? shes bred about 3 to 4 times that ik of but i think more than that before i started noticing the babys
@TheDarkClanVidz I recommend the fluval range :)
thanks for posting regards kev
i feed mine live ghost shrimp every other day my orange, and red zebras absolutely love them
i got 2 pairs of red devil cichlids and both pairs breeding and got fry how to move the mother, dad and fry from my 120gal tank to a breeder tank? The fry are already swimming......
@myra583 African Cichlids are mouth brooders so they do not lay eggs ;)
Is it possible for Cichlids to breed when their in a tank with other cichlids
if a male and female have paired off is it likley they will breed again if kept as a solo pair?
I was wondering if it is common for a male peacock cichlid to eat about half the females eggs before she picks them up during each fertilization.I have one male ob that does this every time. The females in the tank will drop 3 or 4 eggs at once now when mating with him so they have a better chance at picking one up before he eats them. They still manage to get 30 or so but I have never seen another male do this.

@bolly12345 thanks most of what I have found isn't dwarf cichlids
You're best setting up a breeding tank, just remove the male after they've breed. Once the female has released the fry net them up and put them in a fry tank
My ph is 7.2 is that ok for yellow labs? For breeding?
@SwaggerPrettyBoy keep the female in the tank for around 28 days after she picked up the brood of eggs then strip the fry into another tank. if you take the female out of the main tank for a more than a few days the other fish will fight her when you put her back in.
Yes they will breed in a community tank
@mbezik Hahaha no I was looking at my dog playing on the table outside.
Yes
how do you think they breed in the wild? swim around looking for unrelated fish... lol
can you please make a vid on breeding Lupingo Labidochromis thanks(:
What is the gh and kh suppose to be for breeding?
stable water parameters are better than perfect water inconsistently. as long as your parameters are decent you will be fine.
7.2 is kind of low for any African Cichlid in general. Lowest pH that I would recommend for African Cichlids would be 7.8.

@GOLDROCK420 If you look in my How to African Cichlids playlist i've made a video on that subject :)
I usedtoo breed jewels what you do is make the ph about 7.9-8.1 I had 8 and you get your temperature about 75-80 and you wate one or too spawns because that will be the test drive for them
good tips
Can you put all males together without them fighting?
@ADDICTED2BASS1211 with what name?
wat type of fish do you breed

@jewelcichlids4life sand is SOOOOOO much better for ciclids. they enjoy it a lot more and you will see them "playing" with it often. i just did a gravel to sand switch..... sand is a million times better.
Thanks for watching
@ADDICTED2BASS1211 Yes mostly WC a few F1 and TB until I get my next shipment
Trick is keeping stable
You can normally see a little bulge under the females mouth when she is holding eggs and if you watch for long enough and happen to see he open her mouth slightly when facing you then you can see the eggs in there. Another sign if you are not sure is that most females will not feed for the month they are pregnant either so any fish not feeding, check them out to see why. Any more questions you may have, come and see us on ThatForumSite :-)
