  • Among the pantheon of big boy Playstation exclusives you often find the same ones being talked about. Big cinematic blockbusters and sad dad simulators are usually on the menu. Less time and thought is given to the small and quaint, the games that don't quite fit the mold. One such game is Tearaway, a beloved PSVita title turned PS4 masterpiece. A game with a profound and meaningful message, just for you!
    ♥ Big thanks to our guest voices ♥

    BONUS MEME!
    There is so much stuff we wanted to say about this game that we couldn't without the video turning into a 5 hour mess. With that in mind, I find it so strange that more people don't talk about it. Everything from art design to narrative is filled to the brim with stuff to talk about. If I had the opportunity I would add a segment that is basically just a bunch of vistas with the background sounds for ambience, because the atmosphere in this game is so freaking good! The best even! Makes me feel like I am back home by the country side on a nice, warm summers day. Delightful. The Messenger is clearly cooler than Sackboy. Instead people talk about God of War Ragnarök or Horizon: Way Out West. I saw parts of the Game Awards this year and God of War is everything apparently. So no love for Tearaway. Sad times. Honestly Tearaway Unfolded should've just gotten game of the year 2022, and preferably every year after that and retroactively every year before that. That's only fair. If you read all of this junk you should leave a comment that involves the sentence "I love paper because it makes my hands feel glutinous" or something. Tell us what paper makes your hands feel like. Only nice things though, nothing rude or mean. Because then you'll make Atoi cry, you monster.

    Even if they will never know it, the creators of Terraway finally got their story told in a way it truly deserved. It’s such a bittersweet sentiment that stories can only ever exist if they’re told, and more importantly heard. But even if the amount of people who truly hear it is low, lower than it should be, it’s heartwarming to know that there will always be passionate people who will make something as beautiful as this to make sure that the best stories aren’t forgotten.

    This all reminds me of when i played little big planet as a kid. I think the games influenced me more than i realize. I’m remembering now, at some point, i kept trying to search on the internet how to *make* sackboy. I wanted to make my own little characters that i had created in the game, frustrated at the fact that the most solid tutorial was on how to knit it. I don’t know how to knit! I’m 8 years old!

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's a neat story, very familiar. I was older at the time, but LittleBigPlanet was somewhat of an obsession for me for a little while. I even got one of those early copies that had to be recalled because a song included some lyrics that needed to be scrubbed out. So I had it a week before everyone else did, haha. Had the platinum collected within that week, and I did all the co-op challenges alone with several controllers. Ridiculous.

    Tearaway was one of the first games I played on my Vita.
    I had seen some gameplay of the PS4 version but never thought much of it. When I got my Vita and discovered that it was the original version and that it used all of the Vita features I decided to play it to see how it used the console's gimmicks to their full potential.
    I didn't expect the wonderful journey this game would take me into. The message at the end almost made me cry.
    Now every time I mention the Vita or show it off to a friend or familiar I have the urge to just put the console in their hands and start this game.
    I'm happy that so many people remember this story so fondly and I hope that in the future it will get the recognition it deserves.
    This video reminded me of all the emotions I felt on that journey. And the ending reminded me that, while I have created many things since I finished playing, I still have to bring my Iota to my world.

  • @TheGlooga
    @TheGlooga ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Aaaaaaaaaaaa the ending got me really emotional. I really liked this video and should check out this game. It's interesting to see its (lack of) response at release. I imagine that part of the reason it was kind of ignored was that there was an impression that it was a 'tech demo' game. It's also interesting that its contemporaries were Super Mario 3D World and MGSV, and which game specifically it was compared to in reviews, given how the game's de facto approach to the fourth wall and its existence as a game seems really similar to the "turn the game console off right now!" moments in MGS2. I'm also glad that the video analyzed and contextualized the ways the game used its meta aspects. I feel like often discussions of fourth wall breaking kind of stop at "isn't this cool" or "isn't this lame" and never really break into what it's doing beyond its value as like, shock value? The way that this game weaves both its tactile papercraft and its acknowledgement of itself as a video game into the central theme looks really neat and I'm glad that the video highlighted it.

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh, and also, your keen observation about the MGS games is spot on. Even MGS5 has strong fourth wall breaking moments, especially by the end. It's a bit funny that no one really seemed to caught onto those similarities and instead just went 'little man jump'.

    This is a wonderful video. I never played Tearaway, much less knew what it was about, but that ending bit almost made me cry.
    I do think Undertale (unfortunately) completely overshadowed Tearaway because of, at least in part, platform accessibility. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Undertale, but I get the impression that it could not reach the same heights of Tearaway due to the relatively simplistic controls and its delivery method. I would have loved to play this when it came out, but I had no PS4 and certainly no Vita. I still don't, and it frustrates me a bit that I will never have this eye-opening experience of a first-time playthrough. I really wish I could imagine a more accessible way for this story to be told, but sadly I don't think it's possible.
    That being said, thank you for producing this fantastic analysis!

    Chapter 4 is interesting. I wonder if there's a bit of gender at play. I feel some male reviewers/players may not really want to admit to like such a peaceful message ("too cheesy"). The kindergarten comparison of the activities one review makes is striking, too, the idea that paperwork and crafting things is only for children seems to very much fit into that idea. Might be personal bias, though. After all, I love paperwork. Paper feels nice (I've got several little artworks made of folded paper here with me in my room, colorful origami birds and a few rainbow wireframe cubes, some stars). Hands feels nice to work that material, it's very soft!
    Haven't ever met many guys that do such things, the general impression such hobbies have is very much feminine over here.
    Thank you for the review, it was lovely to watch!

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We talked about it a bit during writing. One particular note of interest is how the original Tearaway was marketed with Iota, while Unfolded shifted HARD to plastering Atoi front and center. The press kit didn't even include any renders of Iota anymore. What this means is of course not clear cut, but we have a slight suspicion they might've tried appealing more to girls with the Playstation 4 version based on this.
      In the end it's just vague speculation, but it's definitely not too far fetched.

    I randomly started thinking about this game at work one evening, and with my experiences with games like Astro's Playroom and TUNIC, I started interpreting playing Tearaway Unfolded on PS5 as a form of technological nostalgia: of how its self-awareness as a PS4 game with its ephemeral atmosphere and childlike sense of wonder giving off a sense of abstract nostalgia to me personally like what the Persona series does. Then I started rewatching your video with my interpretation in mind... and suddenly, a lot of what you said made a lot more sense than before. As video games are one of, if not the most, heavily commercialized forms of art that exist... It can genuinely feel painful to me to realize just how much other people do not engage with stories in that way, are encouraged not to, or worse... physically or otherwise can't
    Especially as I've gotten older, and my life has been occupied more by physical labor, I've found myself often not being able to take the time I want/need to think about what I enjoy in these ways. I've been trying to, more recently, to some very inspiring success, and I am writing my own story, and thinking a lot about it... but the general, seemingly more pervasive pattern is so saddening
    But then... a video like this comes along.
    And regardless of whether or not it is a popular video... it does something that I *need* more of.

    As an UnderTale fan who only has a Mac and a Switch to play games on, I really appreciate this video for telling me about a game I never heard of but sounds so, so incredible!!! I'm def gonna look up a full let's play for it (even if that clearly won't be getting across everything playing it myself would). I hope this vid gets a whole lot more people to hear about this game.
    (While I'm here, I dunno if you've heard of the game OneShot? But it does some similar stuff with canonizing the player as an entity and having the emotional core of its story be the relationship between the player and the character you control. It does a lot of neat stuff that I'm forcing myself not to spoil.)

    Bought this game couple years ago on a sale on a whim on ps4 because I heard it's one of the best vita games, was expecting a typical 3D platformer but was blown away! One of the most creative games I've ever played easily and this video is a beautiful tribute and analysis of it.
    To answer the question of why there aren't more analysis I assume because maybe there weren't many kids who had a vita, personally I knew more people who had 3DS mostly because of Pokemon but this game is perfect for children so I wonder if more kids got to play it on ps4 instead.

    A fully-realised version of "Drawn to Life"? Now I'm convinced I have to find a way to play this game… and now I'm crying at the ending… This is such beautiful analysis of what must be such a beautiful experience. I remember seeing ads for Tearaway when it came out and being at least a little intrigued, but I never knew it was hiding all of this. I wish all big-budget games were like this instead of feeling technically impressive but creatively lacking. Maybe that's harsh, but these days I feel like I'm even losing interest in Nintendo games. It's just all a little empty. But there are still great things out there.
    And now I have so many ideas, I have to write something! I'm not sure what paper makes me feel like, but I find I'm more creative when I use it. I think I will keep thinking about this video for a long time.

    that, or I've found another message in the story.
    Tearaway's message is about stories nobody bothers to see or tell, how those stories come to be, the characters in them, and the inspiration for making them.
    I most deeply resonate with the idea of messages that miss their "yous"; messages that fall on deaf ears no matter how sincere, and that slowly become worthless.

    The bit about the reviewers not understanding how Tearaway is more than just "mario 3D world but paper lol" reminds me of how, yesterday, I read some reviews of the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie collection (I was considering it as a gift idea for some family members). A review from one website called the games "cutesy and with a barely comprehensible story." If you played Klonoa 1 or 2, then you're probably lost your shit reading that review. The stories of those games are so incredibly simple for children to understand, contain incredibly obvious added depth for non-children to "get", and touch on a lot of extremely obvious and well forecasted themes (i.e. the cutscene that plays before the track "untamed hearts" does this so clearly. If you know, you know.) that you'd have to skip every cutscene to not get it... which the reviewer alluded to doing.
    To be clear, I'm not doing a "lmao le epic gamergate I hate game journalists!!1! (read: i hate women)" type analysis. I think the main culprit of this incredible brain rot is consumerism and contemporary "gaming culture," which treats games as mere products to be consumed as time wasters rather than engaged with on a deeper level. The first time this dawned on me was when I got a PC copy of Prince of Persia '08 for dirt cheap (like, no more than 6 dollars) and wanted to see what critics thought before I tried it myself. I got scared I was going to have a bad time, but then I actually got around to playing it a year or so later. The vast gulf between what reviewers thought and my experience was genuinely world shattering to my tiny 15 or so year old brain. I felt like I was playing a game about the growing relationship between two quirky and interesting characters; several reviewers described their experience as "lol why can't I die!!1! The old ones on the Gamecube were cooler. Also, all you do is platform around and talk, 5.8/10 not enough action."
    Amazing video btw

      I hearby redact that this was just an amazing video. I wrote this comment before watching the final chapter, and now I'm nearly about to cry. thanks for making this, now I'm actually, seriously going to look into buying a vita, buying the game, playing it, and then making my partner play it

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, like, obviously nothing against games journalists as an entire professional group, but sometimes it is a bit funny (and frustrating) when you find someone in the mix that is so completely out of it that you can barely comprehend it. The whole idea about how these basic ass stories for kids are described as incomprehensible is something we touched upon in the Balan video, and it is clear that sometimes people just don't care enough to pay attention and engage. Which in turn makes them frankly look a bit silly for not even trying.
      We're working on a big Klonoa: Door to Phantomile video at the moment and we'll probably not talk too much about the reviews (although now that you say this maybe we should fit it in somewhere), but hearing that grown adults claim to not get it is just sad, but not surprising. Like you say, it's that consumerist angle, seeing games as only products to consume rather than something to engage with. Klonoa is simple, and the creators clearly wanted to bring a story that both kids and adults could enjoy on different levels. The least a reviewer could do is to not skip the cutscenes and try to freaking understand what is happening. Else it's a flaw on their part, not the game.
      And boy howdy, you're just going in on all of our recent thoughts now. Wrote some tweets about Prince 08 a few days ago, and yeah, it kind of strikes me as odd how much people disliked not dying in that one for no apparent reason other than the fact that you should be able to die in a video game. Which is just silly. Maybe we'll make a video about that one too, because I think the ending is a bit cool, haha.
      Oh and thanks for saying the video is good, haha.

    • @lesbianesti
      @lesbianesti ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Transparencyboo Yeah, the thing is, there's lots of great games journalists out there (I mean, obviously two journalists know this), it's just that the overwhelming majority of this whole "writing about games" industry is dominated by voices that are basically tailor made to spout corporate propaganda or boost game sales. I don't think this happens in some sort of goofy, MI6 James Bond conspiracy type of way, but moreso that it's the impact of companies cultivating a fanbase that serves the interest of industry, and then media outlets hiring from said fanbase. So, basically, you get a bunch of folks in this games journalism industry who see games as products and not art, so they, consciously or not, don't engage with them on any meaningful level. I'd like to write on games myself, just to scratch a sort of analytical itch I get when I play certain games, but this whole phenomenon kind of deters me from doing so.
      It actually breaks my heart how many people lack a basic level of media literacy. Like holy shit, if you didn't get a baby game like Door to Phantomile, how do you navigate a world where, everyday, we're bombarded with media trying to get us to think a certain thing all the time? You'd have to be blown around by the winds of whatever media outlets you regularly consume want you to think, and that's a little worrying.

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lesbianesti I suppose it's also easy for people to make mistakes sometimes. They take a look at a game like Klonoa, see a cute animal character in a platforming game from the 90's and probably don't think more about it. Then they don't pay attention and THINK that they have a point about the story even though it's just them not doing their due diligence. It happens. But yeah, much lack of media literacy is a problem too, way more than we'd like. Although, luckily a lot of people writing about games have a lot stronger understanding of video games than the average player, so I'd say we're in a better place now than we were in the 90s. Thank god, otherwise we would really be screwed, haha.

    • @lesbianesti
      @lesbianesti ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Transparencyboo that honestly makes a lot more sense. It's probably best to have a more charitable interpretation, since, really, it's gonna be a lot less likely that someone just doesn't ever demonstrate any form of media literacy. At least in my interactions with friends and the like, it's more usual to see someone dismiss a category of things as not needing critique at all rather than just not having the skill of being able to analyze something if needed.

    Honestly, the way you describe this game reminds me of Drawn To Life. A Nintendo DS game where the player could use their stylus to draw several in-game assets, including the protagonist.
    Drawn To Life 2 has this cynical, nihilistic ending, where it turns out the events of the game were all the dream of a dying child. It's yanno "top 10 darkest endings in gaming of all time messed up nintendo games", but it's honestly not anything but a shock ending.
    Also, the assets the player could draw in Drawn To Life didn't match the rest of the assets in game. The developer-made assets are all pixel art, whereas the tools for the player to use encourage drawing bold, wonky oekaki.
    I thought Drawn To Life was more gimmick than game when I played it like... damn 15-20 years ago geeze. im also old what da heck.
    This description of Tearaway makes it sound like a better riff on a game about player creativity. I've had Tearaway (PSVita) for a while, but didn't play it much. Might finish it now.

      Oh boy, haven't thought about Drawn to Life for a million years it feels like. I don't think I even ever played it, but I do know about it. It was one of those games I saw several times when I was younger, and kind of always mixed up with Scribblenauts for some reason.

      @@Transparencyboo Both were Nintendo DS games with an emphasis on player creativity. I can understand getting them mixed up.
      Fake edit: Just looked it up and its the same dev team for Drawn to Life and Scribblenauts. That explains it.
      ps: sorry for the spoilers I guess.
