The Bee Gees walk out of CLIVE ANDERSON TALKS BACK (BBC1, 30th October 1997)

  • I remember watching this live at the time and thought the walk out was a bit severe. They all seem to be getting on pretty well and Clive Anderson dished out as many compliments as he does jokes at their expense but it's during the questioning about power and egos that you Barry decide to go on the defensive and start to look for an argument. Robin seemed ready to leave and he was up like a shot when Barry stood up and I think there was definitely some looks exchanged between those two that we don't get to see.
Maurice seems to be having fun all the way through the interview and looks as shocked as Clive when his brother walk out and even says he would love to stay (but he doesn't do impressions!) and thanks Clive.
I pinched this video from GuildfordGhost as he had disabled the comments on his video (as has the other uploader) but I would like to know what everyone thinks about this whole incident.
    Enjoy!

The most offensive part is his inability to wait for the whole answer before asking the next question. It gives the impression he doesn't care about the answer as much as he cares about showcasing his own quickness.

Yup. This was the most horrible things on tv. I wasn’t even as big of a BGs fan as I am now, but I remember feeling Clive Anderson was such a wanker for talking over them, I watched it live back then. He’s not on TV anymore. Top tosser. Bald man syndrome

All the Bee Gees fans attacking Clive. If the Bee Gees had watched episodes of Clive's show or at least researched it, they'd have known this was his whole routine. Taking the p out of his guests. If they weren't ready to be jokingly-mocked, they shouldn't have agreed to be on Clive's show.

@@TonyEnglandUK (edited for clarification and easier reading)
Since you bring that up, it's relevant for me to also bring up what Maurice Gibb had to say after the incident. It's all informative, so I couldn't pick and choose; I opted to relay it in full
      ***
Maurice Gibb: "I thought, "This is great." I thought the [bleep] had done it now, 'cause we were in the greenroom watching Elvis Costello and I thought it was pretty good. He still is not that bad. But we were told he was a huge fan and he was gonna show the video. I went, "Oh! Well, in that case we'll do the show." 'Cause we know we heard things about the show that - well, we're not doing that. Who the hell is going on TV and get ripped apart by that, you know? And they said, "Oh, no, no, no. Clive's a big fan. He really wants you on." And we went, "Okay."
It's funny how it turned out 'cause we didn't think they'd show it, because I thought Clive would be too embarrassed to show it. But it's - 'cause he thought it was - they're setting me up. That's what he thought. He thought we would go back and he'd say, "Got ya!" But we didn't. You know, "I've got ya" would have planted it. We don't mind being ripped apart, but don't rip the songs apart. That's something - 'cause they're like our kids. You know, you don't do that. And we [sic] told us he was gonna be really lovely.
You know, we called ourselves Les Tosseurs, you know, 'cause we put it on the Brit Awards - when we were doing the Brit Awards in London at the Earl's Court. We had dressing room things, and Elton [John] wanted a garden with his so we said, "What's going on?" They were building all afternoon with it while we were rehearsing. And then they built a whole garden with a fountain and everything for Elton and he said, "I was only joking."
Anyway, we put on our door "Les Tosseurs As Seen On Father Ted." Just as a joke, you know, on our dressing room door. So everyone was going around saying, "Who could do that to the Bee Gees dressing room? Who put that on our door?" And everyone was getting real mad because they thought someone was taking the piss on this. And Barry said, "No, we did it." And they went, "Oh! It's very funny, isn't it?" You know? But everyone was looking around for the [bleep] who put that on our door. But that's what it's all about. It's fun. And we thought Clive was gonna be like that. "
      ***
So, no, they did know what CA was all about and they didn't want to do it. THey were pretty much convinced to do it by people letting them believe Clive wouldn't be as abrasive. If anything, they were too naïve and had too much good faith in CA.

Okay, I was 12 when the disco era hit and The Bee Gees had huge success with that. Obviously I was too young at the time to know of their history before that. I have always loved The Bee Gees and recently have researched them more listening to all of their music and I love them as I always have. Their talent is unbelievable and they are my favorite group. During the disco era, I remember quite well and I loved the SNF movie and Stayin' Alive sequel as I was a former pro dancer myself. But learning so much about The Bee Gees history lately has made me love them all the more. Watching this interview, I can say that Clive was an a$$. Barry, Mo, and Robin (Barry especially), are sensitive about being bashed because the disco era created a resulting backlash that they got caught up in. It happened quick too because the movie and songs were out in 1977, and the disco burning episode of blowing up albums at the ball park was 1979. So bam, The Bee Gees were being insulted- they went from this huge success with SNF to being bashed- for really no reason imo. They even had huge success for two decades before that writing hit after hit that was not recognized as it should have been. This backlash they received probably caused them to be cautious of the aholes out there and they realized too they did not get recognition many times when they should have. They are the most talented song writers ever imo, and I wish Mo and Robin (and Andy) were still here. I remember pinning up Andy posters in my middle school locker. Clive was a jerk, had no respect for these wonderful musicians who were better than the Beatles by far. Barry, if you're reading this, I wish you a long, healthy future and please sign the poster I am sending you!!

The backlash from the whole anti disco agenda (which I think was planned but that a different story) really hit the beegees hard. They literally had fbi following them around because the bomb threats were out of control. Like imagine waking up one day and a whole load of people want to kill you for making beautiful music that makes people feel alive? Just out of this world. And it goes without saying this anderson is a huge a hole, I respect them more for walking off and I loved the fact when Barry walked, Robin and Maurice followed. Phenomenal musicians, and amazing brothers. Their music forever lives on, I literally can't go a day without blasting a beegees song ❤️

Since the documentary How Can You Mend a Broken Heart I feel there is more respect and appreciation. Clive Anderson’s approach to test limits was met very quickly with obvious signs of discontent from the brothers, most especially Barry, and he failed to adjust his method despite those signals. Those types of traits is what separates good interviewers from bad. Barry was clearly in a specific state of mind on that day, and quite frankly, his patience lasted a long while.

Excellently well put. Clive Anderson's preferred style as seen here relies on being able to read the mood; you keep pushing, but you need to realise when you're going too far. He didn't. This was the result. Attempts to blame Barry's "ego" completely gloss over this.

Anderson was doing what a few hosts tried to do around that time - be David Letterman. Steve Vizard in Australia was another who tried it. They both failed dismally in a creative sense because they weren't being their authentic selves, and trying too hard to be funny. Letterman was a natural ditz, you can't fake that. The look on Anderson at the end here is priceless, the absolute crestfallen money shot of the whole thing, and then he falls apart. Cannot adlib his way out of a paper bag or be funny on the fly. A few people here have criticised Barry for walking out. I believe he was very gracious to have stayed beyond the first question, because it was totally obvious right from the outset from Anderson's demeanour and smartarse questioning what his intentions were, and that, as Robin said, it was a set up.

And this man absolutely devoured and studied Letterman, watched every show as it beamed in (the same network had the rights to Letterman but opted for a local version instead). The Beegees are incredible songwriters. A lot of people think complexity in music, or very strange sounds or very fast playing are signs of great songwriting genius. All those things are good and fun, but I think very beautiful chord changes, perfect layering of harmonies and gorgeous memorable melodies are true signs of genius.
The mid section of nights on broadway, where they sing: "I will wait, even if it takes forever" , what follows and how they bring it back to the chorus is beautiful.
How deep is your love, look up those chords and transcribe the melody, it's very sophisticated but very seemless.
      Tragedy, great melody.
Saturday night fever is like the defining disco sound of the time.
I just saw a video of them in 1963, perfect harmonies and they were just kids.
