I remember watching this when it aired in January 1993. This was my favorite show in those days and I never missed it (I was in 7th grade then). Timelord Victorious i don't think Ingalls character counts in the same genre, that show had too many christian undertones to it. Al Bundy was good, and after recent viewing, Jack Arnold from the Wonder Years. all of these are realistic american fathers.
Very true about the Christian Undertones . . . With me living in the UK, i never really knew Al Bundy or Jack Arnold. Little House was part of my life growing up in the 70's and 80's. Charles was just a decent hardworking honest caring man and i would loved to have been his son.
Jonathan Shroyer I bet ya 10 bux Al could fight better than Dan. If there was a fight to the death between the two dads.. with say 1 million bucks on the line.. Al would win. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain. If he dies he dont have to see his family ever again and if he won he could have enough money to be able to ignore them for ever. Dan.. Dan although he dosent show it a lot.. he is very emotional man and would be way too worried about how his family would cope without him if he lost... to the point where he wouldnt be able to focus on the fight properly. Even though Dan outsizes Al by a fair bit he would have trouble getting inside Als head. Al is an unorthodox guy and the same would transferr over to his fighting skills. And in case you were wondering.. Yes i do actually have almost half a notebook filled with hypothetical fights between different TV characters. Sometimes the circumstances of the fight need to be changed in order to get certain people to participate.. E.g Having a million dollars on the line would sureley get lazy old Al into a boxing ring. Now Dan on the other hand.. his reasoning for the fight would be purely out of anger towards the insults Al throws at him and to defend his family honor from the constant taunting and insults they will most definately recieve from the Bundy family.
Now Roseanne on the other hand.. Ohh boy. She is one Tough mama and no way on hell is she gonna let Peg bundy beat her in a fight. Even if it wasnt a fight to the death - there is no way in hell Peg would be able to even hurt Roseanne. Cmon the woman is built like the freakin juggernaught and Peg is just a lazy ass skinny ass who cant even clean a kitchen let alone throw a decent punch. Oh and if the two familys were to fight each other in a massive tag match.. Well it would be close if it werent for the fact that the Bundy family have pro wrestler King Kong Bundy as a relative.. so that throws the Connors down just a couple of notches. Shit just checked the time i must run off 2 work. Sorry to cut this dream fight short but i will continue the story later if anyone is interested.
Seriously, this scene will come up on my feed every once in a while and it’s one of the most captivating in Roseanne’s run. I could watch it over and over
@@sassymouth2056 I think you should give it a try regardless on how you feel about the controversy that caused her to get cut from the show, it's just as good as before, if not better.
That’s how you write a character-when picking up a jacket, and walking out a door is enough to send chills down your spine. Not one word has to be said.
You can understand this scene without having seen a single episode of this show. But you'll never appreciate it if you haven't seen all of Jackie and Dan's battles. You understand that he loves Jackie. He'll never tell her but you ain't about to mess with her without Dan teeing off on your face. Love this scene.
I know! Right now I am giving my sister an indian burn while my kids are giving me an ATOMIC WEDGIE all while the wife is teasing the dog about BATH TIME ! We have fun but if you mess with 1 of us YOU MESS WITH ALL OF US!
not unlike when he found out that guy at her work called Becky a word we were not given, I'm guessing (cun*) and Dan went to where they worked, only to find out that Mark had already hit him, thereby making Dan begin to think Mark wasn't as bad a guy as he thought.
When she said she didn't want anyone to know about it I was literally in tears. The acting was so believable and accurate that I forgot this was a show.
One of the most iconic scenes from the 90s when Dan grabbed his coat. Despite how much Jackie annoyed Dan, he loved her, and would do anything to protect her.
Nicky Bobby not to be creepy or anything, but I know of at least two ways to dispose of a body that would throw off a cadaver dog. Women don’t mess around, if we need it gone, it’s gone!
I love how Dan and Jackie argue all the time but at the end of the day, he loves her and would do anything for her. Including just quietly going to take care of Fisher for her and showing him what it feels like to get the crap beat out of you. He didn’t tell Roseanne or Jackie because he knew they would try to talk him out of it.
Idk, I think those two looks from Roseanne as they're walking away are silent looks of approval, as in "I'm gonna take care of Jackie, go take care of Fisher." Could go either way. But yeah, it definitely had to be unspoken.
She's a member of his family, he loves her and would do anything to make sure that she's happy. She may be his sister in law but it goes beyond that. My boyfriend is the same way towards his sister in law. He is very protective of myself, her, his brother and especially his little nephew.
Had to come back and watch this again. Laurie Metcalf has to be one of the most underrated, greatest actresses. She absolutely deserved all 3 Emmys she got for this show, same with Roseanne.
Dan was the man! Too bad they didn't film the actual confrontation but what we see is enough. And even when the cops came to arrest him he cut Roseanne off when she started to rant about what Fisher did, simply saying "this is about me". Dan had to take a stand for Jackie, while respecting that she didn't want anyone to know about it.
I would have loved to see the confrontation. Dan knocks on the door and waits for Fisher to open it. He then pummels Fisher and walks away without saying a word.
@@Deadpool_64 yeah to be honest i think an actual fight scene woud have taken from this raw emotion only because the fight would have been so fake but to show Dan leaving the house and then coming back for Rosanne to see him soaking his bloody fist in ice and the cops to come knocking was perfect.
I always loved when you hear the audience "woo" really low. They knew that when Dan walked out that door, there was going to be hell to pay. Dan was just awesome like that.
My favorite moment of this episode was Dan picking up his jacket and walking out the door. I was literally cheering because I knew Dan was going to beat the crap out of Fisher.
Dan Connor is my hero! There was another episode where the girls were mocking Roseanne or something, and he really got on their case. Most of the time Rosanne ruled the roost, but when Dan occasionally stood up and laid down the law, everybody listened. His role was so awesome.
Stephen James yep that was a Mother's Day episode where the girls took Roseanne out to a beauty makeover and stuff to suck up to be able to ask to go to a concert without a adult on Chicago
Stephen James I think that episode where Dan punished Darlene and Becky was the Mother's Day episode, where they made Rosie breakfast and got her a present for a day at the spa hoping to butter her up in order to go to a concert?
Real men don't hit women! Hell, they never even think about it!!!!!! That is somebody's daughter.....somebody's sister! If things ever got that bad in my relationship with MY wife, I would just leave! Never would lay a hand on her. Besides, if I did her Dad......my father-inlaw........would beat my ass!
Darrell Henry The only hopes Fisher has now are as follows: One, he has access to firearms and willing to shoot Dan on sight and make sure that shot kills him as that would be his only opportunity to do so. Two, He has money or can get money to vacate that city/state/metro area ASAP and move as far away, preferably the furthest coast before Dan can get to him. Three, he runs to his own family for assistance. This could backfire as his own family may deal with him themselves far worse than Dan would. This happened with my family when my uncle hit his girlfriend. My other uncles and my dad all beat his ass themselves and met up with the girl's father and brothers and told them there was no need for them to beat my uncle's ass. We take care of and deal with our own. One chance in three he avoids the ass beating. Not good odds in his favor.

Hell yes, I dont think the applause was from a signal to the audience. They knew, they approved, and yep, that look, brrr. He really never got enough credit imo, he could ACT.
John Goodman gave me goosebumps in several episodes. Nobody played angry better than him on a sitcom. When he was upset, even Roseanne knew to back the hell up!
+jack sprat They approved because they knew Dan was gonna mop the floor up with Fisher!! I like that they didn't SHOW Dan rough him up because it just leaves that much more to the imagination.
This always resonates for me...when I was kid, my sister had this ex-boyfriend who was abusive and stalking her. He tried to run her and her current BF over when they were out on a date. My sister came home crying and that was it. My father didnt say a word, just left and came back a few hours later. We later found out that he went to that guy's house and pulled him out in the street and beat the living daylights out of him. A week later he came by the house and apologized to my sister in front of my mom. Old school business right there.

I'm 42 years old, I wish I had a Dan in my life back then. I can still feel them on me and in me. Dan is literally the man. This makes me feel safe.
Stephen Dias it’s very comforting to know there are men like Dan in the world
It resonates with me because this is what batterers count on. Not saying anything
The look on Dan's face and says "is she ok?" After Rosanna tells him, just that alone you know someone is about to catch Dan's hands.
I love that no matter how much Jackie annoys Dan, he's ready to square-up for her at a moment's notice.
To bad we didn't get to see Dan kick Fisher's ass.
shadowman2192 I think its better we dont. Its more powerful to have to imagine what he did to that S.O.B!

I saw this episode when I was a kid and didn't really understand being I was only 6 yrs old. Years later, after having been through that I watched this episode again and bawled because I felt it. I said all the same things; "I don't want anyone to know. It was my fault, I make him upset." And Dan at the end. No yelling, no cussing just simply grabbing his coat and handles it. Awesome episode all around.
The mere fact that all Dan did was turn around, grab his coat fade to black was chilling. More than any violent, curse-filled outburst, he was simply going to let this woman-beater have a taste of his own vile medicine.
I remember watching this when it aired in January 1993. This was my favorite show in those days and I never missed it (I was in 7th grade then). It quickly jumped from Dan’s hilarious reaction at obscene comic books that Darlene was writing to the shock that Jackie’s boyfriend had been physically abusing her. This was one of the most powerful episodes of the series. I love that this show never ran away from tackling real life issues and problems.
Moments like these is why Roseanne is my favorite sitcom. It's a perfect blend of comedy and drama

Agreed. I always loved how the stories kept running. You just didn't see an episode about one particular thing and then it was wrapped up in 30 minutes. They drug the story out for the whole season.

Dan Conner in my opinion, was the best and most ideal father that's ever been on American television.
What about Charles Ingalls?
Yes, he and Al Bundy.
Bill Cosby actually
Dan is one of the best television dads of all time. Right up there with Uncle Phil.
Al Bundy is the best
Al Bundy? Lmao
Now Dan on the other hand.. his reasoning for the fight would be purely out of anger towards the insults Al throws at him and to defend his family honor from the constant taunting and insults they will most definately recieve from the Bundy family.
dick van dyke I feel Dan's concern for the well being of his family would be a strength and not a weakness. It would motivate him to win.
I could watch it over and over
2:12 when Roseanne gave Dan the "go get him" look..........priceless.

He didn’t tell Roseanne or Jackie because he knew they would try to talk him out of it.
My fav ep with him and Jackie. Was when Roseanne was away. And she played housewife.
They didn’t always get along but you knew if anybody hurt anyone in his family he would hurt them! (Meaning the abuser)

Allen Quinn I agree. She is so underrated! She deserves to get big roles like Meryl Streep. She's able to do comedy and drama.
If she got 3 Emmys, then how is she underrated?
She wasn't underrated when she was on Roseanne, but she's underrated in general. Deserves more accolades or even a show of her own.
she's brilliant. i've watched this episode a million times, yet still tear up with her performance here.
She is going to win an Oscar this year for LADYBIRD !!!
Sometimes less is more. We didn't need to see it, the story with the before and after was enough to convey the proper emotions.

Two, He has money or can get money to vacate that city/state/metro area ASAP and move as far away, preferably the furthest coast before Dan can get to him.
Three, he runs to his own family for assistance. This could backfire as his own family may deal with him themselves far worse than Dan would.

I am a survivor also. I cried bcuz I had lived those phrases: 'bad mood', 'you know better', 'this is your fault', 'you made me do this', 'I'm sorry, don't leave me, and I won't hit you again'... I lived them all. Sure wish I'd had a 'Dan' back then. If you or someone you know is in a violent relationship - get out, get help, and save yourself before it's too late.
I did the same thing when my best Friends sister got beat by her boyfriend . Unfortunately I spent three days in Jail. And she moved outta state with him.
