Micro long-range drones are a big interest to me. I came across a project that uses a Raspberry Pi for smart functions like elevation hold and planned flights. There's only a couple of videos on it, but they boasted a 20+ minute runtime which is amazing. Unfortunately the project seems rather dead and there hasn't been any updates in over a year. I may have to give one of these a shot, though I'll likely start with a small BNF drone as that seems to be a cheaper route to get everything I need.

Great idea on both versions. I like the RTF version for the new person, especially because it uses the 18650. For someone new to the hobby, just understanding battery charging and the dangers with LIPO can be challenging. For the more experienced person in the hobby..........you know they will end up with the production version and the 3D printed version that they have to build so they can do their own comparison.

Its the fpv video wobbly only because of the wind and it would be smooth without wind? Will it be smoother with carbon fiber arms in final product? Thats the only little negative I see here. Looking to buy something thats already built, works with flysky and will fly for 10+ minutes, 18650 is awesome budget thing too. I have built my first drone, MJX Bugs 3 into Air mode trainer with just F4 board and reciever being new parts and I almost lost will to finish the PID tuning before I finaly got it smooth, then I crashed, then its not smooth again, so I don't want to fiddle with that anymore, I just need a flyer that will give me some fun cruising around, but not this wobbly for that price tag, hope final product is better or this was really windy? I just love it in every other aspect, I don't need it to carry any kind of camera, and I'f I ever try that, its got good 5V chip on it to hook up some naked chinese knockoff cams without battery.

i just finished building a 1S 2.5" (65mm) "long range" quad with 18650 battery tray.
in the first test flights i've gotten 15 minutes + easy flight times (cruising around in my house) with landing voltage at 2.7V.
at first i used HQ T65 biblade props, which made me land around 3.2 volts since the throttle had to near 95% to just stay in the air.
i swapped them out for GemFan flash 2540 triblade props and i could fly until 2.5V until i lost enough thrust to stay in the air.
my nano LR isn't even build to be as light as possible, it has an 400MW vtx with build in dvr ( to get some nice recordings), full carbon fiber frame, metal screws, a foxeer lollipop antenna and a beeper on board..
at 400mw power i will loose roughly half a minute of flighttime compared to 25mw, and the step up regulator struggles and gives a lot of interference (horizontal lines through the fpv feed)
parts used (for those who want to build one and on the "cheap")
-18650 battery tray with high current gold contacts (which is JB welded to the top plate of the frame)
    -sony VTC6 3000mah 10C 18650 cell
    -happy model EX1203 11000KV motors
-multi function step up boost module set at 8V (for VTX and reciever)
-namelessRC D400 400MW vtx with DVR module
    -caddx ant 1200tvl nano camera
-Play F4 whoop AIO flight controller
    - SkyStars StarLord micro toothpick freestyle 2.5 inch frame
this little quad sits great next to my 4" 4S long range digital airunit quad and my 3" 4S long range vista quad.

Loved this idea as a low-risk way of getting into this hobby. I'm trying to follow the instructions regarding the wiring diagram, however, I am unable to get my receiver inputs to do anything. I am using a DSMX SRXL2 Serial Micro Receiver leftover from an unused fixed-wing. The receiver powers up and binds to the transmitter, but I'm unsure if I have the signal wire attached correctly or configured in beta flight correctly. I currently have the signal wire (S) attached to the pad labeled RC and the No Connect (NC) not soldered to anything. Motors spin when using the motor test in betaflight so I figure the receiver is the issue. This is my first time using a flight controller of any kind of help would be appreciated.

Hei man ! great video ! thanks for the work. I tried checking some of the part links and apparently some parts are not available anymore. Would it be possible to update those ? would be a huge help ! also, what type of camera would you recommend to have better quality , but still be able to use it on this type of drone ? Thanks so much, just bought my first 3D printer and I always wanted a drone so, what better method than starting with your own diy one !

Thanks for making this video. I build electronics, so wiring to me looks simple enough, but I have little to no experience flying, printing the body and using it to learn an excellent way to get into the hobby.

Would love to see this reprinted and retested with the new Bambu PLA Aero which claims up to 50% less weight for similar PLA print. Love the video even a couple years after as I am looking into options for cheap "recon" drones for quick flights to survey an area to ascertain what the area looks like as well as targets. Cool print and hope to making one soon for myself!

I could see this being fun with a DJI vista on it, or maybe insta360go2 :)

I must say watching your video on this nano quad cost me a few dollarydoos to say the least, I just ordered all your recommended parts so I can build two of these puppy's 😅, and I may or may not have upscaled it on fusion 360 and brought some larger 1607 eachin tyro's to slap on it 😅🇭🇲 down fall Australia is so far away from every where and the shipping was pretty big...... I blame you for this totally awesome new hobby/ obsession with fpv I now have ✌ thanks man and as all ways, love your videos 🥳

Hi, how was the battery holder attached? I purchased the battery holder from your AliExpress link but the one I received looks different and says "For 26650 battery", is it the correct one or was I sent one thing for another? Thank you

@Dave_C FPV you should look at 21700 batteries, they are just a bit bigger than 18650's but will give you more capactiy. if you want to go crazy, They make 26650's too.

Being that this is an older video, what Flight controller would you recommend to todays standards? Currently in the old spec sheet it calls for a standard tinywhoop AIO board the Jhemcu Play 4, any suggestion on what board to replace it with?

Love this little design. It's printed with motors installed. Just waiting on the FC and a few other parts to arrive. Can't wait to see how far I can push it! Dave, any idea what the efficient cruising speed is?

    I have a few questions...
Could you recommend something a bit cheaper? I am looking for something that can fly 10-15 minutes at least and to have cheap battery and this looks great but it is a little bit pricey since I am a noob and just want to move away from my current setup which is literally a toy drone with fpv camera.
Could I buy this flight controller and just put cheaper motors and video transmitter?
Are there any cheaper motor that would work?
    Thanks in advance.
