You should team up with Jim Lindenas. What a dynamic duo!

Jeez! I didn’t see you discharge those caps before you poked around in there! Somebody tries that at home and finds themselves on the end of 500 volts!

True! I should have included a warning about that.

There is no 500 volt potential in a simple AM vintage radio. The most you will find is +150 volts DC. However as the power ramps down after turn off the caps will discharge to a safe level. The large filter caps are not original, but they did a good job install substitutes.

Using steel wool like that is a BAD idea!!! Little bits of steel wool get into every little nook and cranny on the chassis. Especially in the tube sockets and can short out things. Ask me how I know this?? From experience. I cleaned a GE chassis with steel wool and the dial light kept blowing out and the radio would almost die. Closer examination of the tube sockets revealed they were loaded with steel wool bits. Used a strong magnet and removed all the steel wool and problem solved. No more blowing dial lamp and the radio works perfectly!

That’s a hot chassis. You should have it operating on a variable isolation transformer. Why on earth are you cleaning it before you fix and restore the chassis?

Here we go. Another expert. Not fast, halffast.

I don’t claim to be an expert, I just like to work on stuff because it’s fun and expands my knowledge. If I said or did something in here that’s literally wrong, then it would be more useful to me and my viewers to point out the actual errors. Otherwise you’re just being snarky, and I haven’t learned anything.

Washing the tubes can remove the numbers.

Is that steel wool you are using? Ohh Lordy no! Let’s hope you didn’t spread fine steel hairs all over the connections and tuning cap.
