I'm doing my research in preparation for a restoration of a Brunswick 15 and came across this series. The content creator here is an excellent instructor and it's unfortunate that the series wasn't completed. Last content created here was a couple years ago and I can't find any information as to why this channel went silent.

I have one of these and have been coming to love some old Apple hardware, and I have the same problem. Even if I cant fix the display and somehow turn it into a screenless box that connects to a monitor, is there even use for one of these today?

Is the parameter battery the same one used in the Macintosh Power PC? Recently found a tossed out G4, & some time ago I found a tossed out 6500 / 250 & matching CRT. The 6500 works, but not sure about the G4! Your G4 has iOS X?

This is awesome! I have the 1969 version that's just metal with black writing. Fortunately it works, because when I opened it up, it's just a bunch of components soldered together. No PCB at all. I've considered selling it, but I can't find any for sale online to get a price range for it.

Where’s the power supply? You said that this is a take apart, but the only thing that you have done is take off the bottom case. And you did put it together again. That’s good.

    • @MuseumOfObsoleteTechnology

Hi, sorry I didn’t get that far into disassembling the thing. I was trying to cover what you’d need to do for basic maintenance like the PRAM battery and upgrading the memory. That’s all made tricky because of having to deal with things like the thermal paste. The power supply is a small board with one round side, bolted in adjacent to the hard drive and optical drive in the stack that remains in the upper case in the video. There’s nothing especially tricky about that part, just keep note of what order things came out so they can go back in reverse order - the annoying part on this machine is having to take so many things off in order to get to other things. I once had to replace the neck on one of these, which required disassembling pretty much every single thing.

Just now watching this as retired and currently enjoying full-time my passion of vintage Mac computers. Recently acquired an iMac G4 and the DVD drive is dead, so this very helpful. Since we are now in the era of the M1/M2/etc. Macs, it was quite funny to see the system boot up at end when you had the speed of the video running at 10x speed (or whatever it was) ... what I saw is how its like to boot up my M2 MacBook Pro!!! LoL

Thanks for that nice and detailed video. I actually found the device quite easy to take apart due to your explanation. Unfortunately my iMac won't start up - the PRAM battery has around 3.2 volts - it should have 3.6v and I really hope that it will start again after replacement - fingers crossed!

Hello! I have a question, I’ve had an iMac G4 since i was really little, it was my childhood computer, and I’ve just the other day started using it again. It was sitting in storage for a while but works just fine now. I am worried though because it seems quite dusty on the inside (looking down through the holes on the top), I have no computer experience whatsoever and am worried this may impact my beloved computer’s performance an longevity in the future. I don’t think I could take it apart myself, so I’m wondering if i should take it to my computer guy to get it cleaned out? As I said there are no obvious issues with it’s performance, I would just like to have this computer with me as long as possible as i am incredibly attached to it. I don’t know much about computers as this is the only computer I’ve ever owned, so I don’t know if the dust something i should worry about at all?

Got one of those was working fine, stopped to play chime while powering on. Audio stutter problems like a damaged speaker I didn't mind so headphones and external speakers was working perfectly fine. Now just gives a grey screen with no image turning it on, sometimes a white flash screen and after that grey again. Powering with headphones still play the startup chime and OSX cuz it makes sounds while pressing mouse clicks or keys on the keyboard. Once booted to Mac OSX after 5 minutes pressing power iMac goes to suspension with blink light on monitor and HDD turns off, pressing anything gives white screen for one tiny instant and then grey again. I did PRAM method and PMU button reset but still not giving any image on display. Not even with CMD + S or other combination keys to do emergency recovery or something. I still have plenty of important old pictures and stuff stored here any help please. Or main board is about to die?? Boots even from super drive but no image just grey color.

Oh boy! The excitement! Tomorrow I will receive from Amazon a battery and some thermal paste - and because my iMac G4 is not responding at all - just like the one in this video - I am so hopeful!! It's a bit big for use as a paperweight, so my fingers are crossed. (I will update with the result - good, or bad).
