"The Americans" by Walker Evans was praised to the skies when it was published in the 1950s. I think Maier's work meets or exceeds his level, and is gradually getting the recognition it deserves.
I think those who say she didn't want her work seen need to remember she preserved the negatives after she couldn't afford to develop herself at considerable expense for someone with her limited means. I think she did hope one day the work would be discovered, anyway I'm glad it was.
Ms Maier used a Rollei twin lens reflex with a 80mm f 3.5 lens for most of her photos. Can't tell exact model unless I find a picture with a close up view of the camera.
I wonder why Ms Maier kept these and thousands others she took locked away during her lifetime. Money had something to do with it, but judging from a documentary I saw recently I wonder if she would have developed and exhibited her work even if she had the means to do so. Extraordinary and enigmatic like her pictures, perhaps the first photo of her in this montage is all we need to know about her.
Vivian Everybody Is only in this bus stop for a grand tour Museum. Check out memory’s details, Throw glass on the mirror. Are you surprised a plebian? She didn’t wasted moments. We get her skyline, That cheese on children, What wonderful black detail. Any you smile rose. This is the perfect camera, How big and small. What nature behind her photograph. Mirrors make you blind? She studied art In the halls of Montezuma. Social creep in. What would the cop say? Now Fame, What damage while she’s alive. This is her predicament, And we’re just pilfering. Can you say grace? How dare you say copyright. (the poem's original posting can be seen at: Vivian Everybody Is only in this bus stop for a grand tour Museum. Check out memory’s details, Throw glass on the mirror. Sometimes I wonder whether this is a survivors gift to herself...her own offspring...the act of creation is much like giving birth...painful yet exhilarating...once created it in a sense is it's own being but will to an extent carry some clue to it's creator...it changes life...life changes it...it is valuable in and of itself even if never recognized...If there is a God could this be OUR TRUTH?
Que magia, estas foto no la había visto , no dejo de maravillarme . Gracias Vivian

Incredible photos, looking forward to documentary and book!
mesmerizing.
She's my inspiration.
I agree. Makes it more about the subjects than the actual photographs.

Wow, beautiful! The photographers remind me of Gary Stochl's

WOW. RS. Canada.
what kind of camera and lens is she using? Does anyone know?
Looks like a Rolleiflex twin lens reflex 6x6cm.

@Frankie19571 She was French.
And her Father was Austrian born in Hungary.
compared to the others I have seen on Maloofs page these dont look like hers
The scroll effect is annoying, making it impossible to actually see the whole frame at once. Shame.
She used most Rolleiflex with 8mm
80 mm lens
