So for instance, when you know who sent something baneful towards you (ie: jinx, trick, hex, curse) you can place a photograph of that exact person instead. This one is specific for a hex/curse but in essence you could be inspired by this spell and adapt it to ‘bind’ or remove that negative energy - the only thing is that this spell is very symbolic in that we turn the candle upside town to ‘return’ the hex, whereas something like depression doesn’t (usually) have a person who ‘sent’ it to you (unless of course your depression is caused by someones actions?)

Karma is a buddhist belief and is something that occurs in following lives, not in this life time so my opinion would be no. You're sending something back to it's sender, not creating a hex yourself... however I've hexed before when it has been required and I'm still living, breathing and feel I live a very blessed life :)
I'm not the author of the spell but I would say probably not unless you make it about sending the intention to cast the spell back... otherwise I would focus on protection more than anything
