You will soon realize how important line was from askeladd: "In the name of my ancestor ARTORIUS". You will never see him again saying this sentence. Thats how much respect he had for Thors.

Therefore meaning that's how much he respected his dad. Through most of this season askladd only sees thorfinn as his dad, but before it ends he would see thorfinn as thorfinn because he is "predictable" and his dad isn't. That's the philosophy of askladd mind towards thorfinn. That's why this show is more complex than any other anime this season

This is one of the few occasions Askeladd ever shows his true self. At that moment, he met a better man than him, someone with the brains and the bran while tempered to wield it justly. To a man like Askeladd, coming across some like him is rare.

Askeladd is a mercenary but he also acts like a pirate, and most vikings were mere farmers going out on raids just to earn a bit more money so... yeah, calling them "pirates" is accurate too.
The real Vinland saga begins when all the fighting stops and life starts for Thorfinn. When he truly has no enemies.

a cool observation of askeladd's personality in this episode and probably throughout thorfinn's journey along with askeladd is if you noticed how askeladd''s view on thorfinn changes from not caring if he dies to him giving him a reason to be a better warrior. when thorfinn first asks for a duel, askeladd thinks nothing of it, but after thorfinn trains and gets slightly better(when he threw that dagger with astonishing accuracy) in that short period of time, he thinks he'll be of an asset to him in the future. so he lures him to more battles in exchange for another duel. for askeladd, if thorfinn dies he's not losing anything just one less annoying brat. but if he survives, he'll have the son of thors, which he shaped himself on his side.
because I really do think askeladd respected thors a lot and thought it a shame that he held on to unrealistic ideals of pacifism that ended up getting him killed. I don't think he meant it as a joke when he asked thors to be their leader :/

Coming back to this episode, after seeing the end of season 1, really does put things into focus... Like A LOT. The manner in which he makes his pledge to Thor, his twitch when he knocked out the kid, the reason why he told the kid his worth compared to Thors, why he made his 'joke'..... Damn man.... that was quite a reflection....

The feels were definitely with this one, but seeing how Thorfinn grows into a warrior, and his relationship with Askeladd is one of the highlights of the show.

Good reaction and good episode too. Askeladd is very deep and intriguing character that will be hard to figure out as you really have to understand his word + face expressions to figure out what he truly is meaning. Thorfinn's VA who yelled at the end of this episode really did outstanding work, that really hits when he is screaming his lungs out.

Askeladd was NOT joking when he asked Thors to be their leader. BTW it's Thors, Thor is a God, Thors is a name of a historic figure.

Came back here to rewatch vinland saga and i realized the scene where askeladd ask thors to be his leader is not a joke, its foreshadow to what happened in eps 20-25
That line “In the name of my ancestor, Artorius, I swear.” always stuck out to me because of Dark Souls than leading me to King Arthur who had the name of Artorius. Genius level of subtle world building.

Askeladd is such an interesting character one episode you hate him and one you probably fuck with him the recent episode I jus watched made me hate him
He’s honestly the best written complex character of all time, you want him to one day lose to Thorfinn but you also sympathize with what he has to put up with in the world.
You all are tripping about Askeladd giving up his role as a leader to some dude he didn't know at all and had to kill for money. Why would he want thors to lead a band of men he despised, when he could exploit and use them to his benefit, which is exactly what he does throughout the show.

In Demon Slayer right now the manga is popping off some dope ass fights going on. I was reading Vinland Saga but I quit when the main character totally swore off violence and is a lil bitch ass farmer it got boring af.
