Wonderfully made, this documentary about the great Russian composer it is just perfect. And who best to guide us through Shostakovich Opus than Valery Gergiev?.. But don't disregard John Hurt as the voice/narrator. I enjoyed (and learnt) very much watching this Video. Thanks so much for uploading it 🙏
Beautiful documentary on this great composer. He had a hero, the people, in his music. Very well put. He loved Mahler, and understood the pain of people being rejected and under rule. You can hear the similar pain in Mahler's music. They would have been great friends.♥️ Thanks again for amazing film 🙏🏆🏆
I’m a musician who has performed, conducted and taught the music of Shostakovich my entire life. When he died in 1975, the world lost the last truly great classical composer. There has been no one else of his stature since. But I have absolutely no respect for the man who calls himself a maestro and is willing to sit in the pocket of the little man whose tyrannical and authoritarian behavior has cost the lives of thousands. The maestro immediately ran to his side to support the madness. Maybe the little man will give him a supply of toothpicks to twitter in front of the musicians who secretly ignore him and laugh at his ridiculous mannerisms. They are not following his powerful leadership. They are performing the music in spite of his ridiculous musings with the toothpick. I hope the West never welcomes him to their money again. But I truly am sorry for the wonderful musicians who must continue to endure his musical incompetence and corruption.😢
Very well said. When I learned about the ‘maestro’s’ allegiance to his friend the terrorist and heartless tyrant and murderer I was disgusted to the core. I can’t stand to see his face.
Perhaps you ought to stick to music, and keep your political views to yourself, or even better, educate yourself about the real situation in Ukraine. Supporting Zelensky is inexcusable. The SMO was completely justified in order to save the lives of Russians living in the south eastern regions. There were also vital strategic justifications for the intervention, not to mention the presence of illegal bioweapons labs there.
I dont care about the man his bodylanguage as a conductor but it still puzzles me that after his understanding and insights of Shostacovitch he backs a neo-Stalin.
Dear mr Gergiev. No matter how great a conductor you are, the Ukranian people will look back at you as the one who took Putin's side in the war. That's why you were ousted in Rotterdam and Munich. Shostakovich on the other hand loved the Ukrainians and loved to spend time among them, and wasn't all that fond of autocratic leaders.
Shostakovich would have HATED the current Ukrainian regime. Don't fool yourself. Gergiev is on the right side of history, and made the correct assessment.
@@russellparratt9859 He would have enjoyed more freedom in the current democracy of Ukraine than in the current autocracy of Russia. But I take it that you are rather fond of autocracies.
I wish people would stop using words like "descriptive" about music. Music does not describe. It is not a descriptive art. Even opera and vocal music (these may convey ideas, but still can't describe), even more so instrumental music (which is entirely concerned with emotions and nothing else except emotions). To say that the Leningrad Symphony "describes war" is to reduce great music to nothing. Otherwise a nice documentary. But you won't miss anything special if you don't watch it. Much better listen to Shostakovich without the burden of biography, ideology and other descriptive nonsense. His music, like all great music, is complete in itself. It needs a great performance and a receptive mind, nothing else.
5:17 why not just say he got 2nd prize? For the same reason Rachmaninoff is hardly ever mentioned as getting 2nd prize for piano when he was the same sort of age - because they are inordinately adored in the West. Prokofiev was arguably better than either I come from the same teaching line as Shostakovich (sort of - my teacher's teacher's teacher was Nikolaev).

Dear lord Gergiev's English is fantastic, perfect , I am 58, I have been living in England for 36 years I can never talk like him
He is a Putin supporter
Bravo Maestro Gergiev, what a great narration, you really feel Shostakovich and understand him. I could feel his pain. What a great documentary.
Thank you for unloading this excellent video 😊🙏🏽
Thank you for putting this beautiful uTube about Shostakov together 😁
What a great documentary
0:35 thanks for this wonderful documentary12:20❤
16:59 I love how Valery Gergiev directs using a toothpick
This is for me a very important video to se and listen to….But I miss Kondrashin in the movie…

Absolutely. This censoring of Russian artists and performers is ludicrous.@@russellparratt9859
Perhaps Messiaen, Ligeti, Boulez, Stockhausen, Berio, Henze, .... were not truly great classical composers??
I dont care about the man his bodylanguage as a conductor but it still puzzles me that after his

Гордость....
Mahler and Bruckner were the greatest symphony composers. ❤
Symphony no.6?
The largo?
LOL
Yes its a beautifull (overlooked)piece and nothing laughable about it.

Read the book “Testimony “
What is it about?
@@migueldias2536 The Memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich as related to and edited by Solomon Volkov.
@@homeofcreation Thank you very much for the insight!!

"Testimony" is widely regarded as inaccurately representing Shostakovich. I encourage you to read criticism of the book.

Gergiev is crazy. Ten minutes in and his conclusions are almost universally beyond the facts of Shostakovich's life. Too bad Kondrashin is gone.
please present your response in a rational sensitive manner ... or else remove this post ...
Wonderful documentary!!, sad this man has left us.
Who dubs over Shostakovich?
Does anyone know the piece name at 11:30? It's amazing
It‘s the finale of his first piano concerto

Sostakovic grande erede di Mahler
Fascinating documentary..too bad the despicable Gergiev is the narrator!
