I know this is old. But isnt it best to leave the snow and ice to help insulate the pond? As the wind blowing over the surface is responsible for most of the temp drop in winter
You should leave the ice, as long as there is an opening for air exchange. I like to remove the snow on top of the ice to allow for some sunlight penetration.
Hi there ! Great video. I have a pond about 2 feet deep. Would this be safe for my fish if I use a bubbler at around 11 inches to keep an opening or 2 feet is not deep enough? Thanks for any suggestions!
Thanks for the video. I have a wire cage to protect my small 4-10" koi near Panama City FL from all the predators including alligators. The cage is 2.5'Tx3'Wx8'L and is in a 1/2 acre mud pond with about 30 koi fish in the cage. The cage is actually 3'T but I have it out of the water about 6" for the koi to be able to feed. See any problems that I might have in winter? The larger 14"+ koi I have swimming the pond will be in the deeper 7' water in the winter but didn't know it 2.5' deep water is okay. I know freezing over isn't a problem.
Thanks for the comment and question! The only thing I would worry about is just the amount of fish within the cage. Obviously, there’s plenty of water because it’s part of a large pond, but having that many fish confined so close together, could increase the risk of them passing illness from one to another.
How is the gas escaping as i am assuming there is koi in this pond. I live in Erie county pa and would see temperatures in double digits below zero. Would you need a heater to keep an open spot in the ice.
A floating de-icer or a powerful aerator pulled close to the surface of your water will ensure that the water always leave an area for gases to escape. This is a very important part of winterizing your pond.
I have the same kind of pond here in Canada... got around 12-16inch of ice this winter... kept a air pump around 10inch deep and a small floating heater. Didn't run the waterfall... unplugged everything. Should i try to keep it running next winter ? Way colder here then in northern States.
kimuseni Great question. We use flexible schedule 40 pvc on pretty much all of our installations. This one has 2” flex pvc buried only about a foot underground.

Yes it should be. Just make sure you don't put that bubbler too deep. You want the bottom water to remain calm during the winter.
Going in to depth in a future video about the ways it could be done wrong seems useful.

How is your plumbing lines set up coming from the skinner to the fall? Ie. do you use pvc and is it buried underground?
