I respect these guys for keeping an open mind and trying stuff that a lot of Malaysians won't usually eat and still appreciate the taste of the dishes. Well done lads 💪
A durian is like thanos. It keeps half of the population while wipes out the other half. Only around 50% of people are chosen by the durian to consume it. Congrats to those 50% of the population chosen by the durians!

As a Malaysian, these dishes feel more like a weird food than the worst food. These are delicious. You guys should try something like ikan bekok or pure tempoyak (the tempoyak mentioned here was like the "spiced up" version that are ready to be used to make the soup. pure tempoyak is just fermented durian, old people used to eat it with budu and rice)
the thing about ikan patin is there's 3 types of patin available in malaysia Pool: the cheapest one you can get, bred in the pool Caged: Bred in the cage which was placed in the river and eats stuff that was given by the cage owner Wild: Usually roams freely in the river and eat everything, including fruit which gave its meat a better taste than the other two If calvin said the fish is oily, i suspected that they probably using the pool fish..because they got more fats compared to the caged and wild one as the fish swims in the pool without any strong current like the river...that is the moment i realized that even fish needs exercise to reduce fats 😂

There is an old German saying, "Don't ask too many questions as to what goes into sausages." The lungs, the tubes, and other innards it seems becomes part of something that makes you go WHHHHAAATTT??? I have tried Durian. I can see how it can be made into something when fermented. I am thinking of a fermented Durian dipping sauce for the mystery sausages. What inspired me to say this was the German restaurant across the street called Baden Baden. Malaysia is full of surprises. In Kuala Lumpur there is a lady who serves what is called Fish Pickel. I liked it.
This is the Sonny Side style I fell in love with some years ago! This is raw, talented journalism, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, traveling the whole wide world to tell a powerful food story.. Keep up the amazing work, Mr Side! 👏👏👏
Sonny, I’ve been watching and enjoying your channel for a while. Doesn’t it feel amazing to know how much more relevant you are than the Travel Channel now? You struck gold. Kudos!
Beef lung has to be eaten freshly cooked/fried, people don't like it because its been left to sit out in the open for too long that it toughens up becoming chewy and losing flavor like fried chicken, they are often refried which doesn't help it. Otherwise freshly cooked its amazing.
I like durian, but tempoyak.. I love them! In Sarawak, we usually didn't use sugar for fermentation. We only use salt, and that's how I like it.. no sugar. Fried tempoyak with chillis, ikan bilis, onions, and garlic.. simple but delicious 😋
I bought Durian once for my brothers and I to try. We cracked it open on the back porch and gave it a shot. We all enjoyed it, and I loved it! I personally don't think it's as offensive as people make it seem. We froze what we didn't eat, and had some the next day. The way the ice crystals formed made it like a durian popsicle and it was SUPER good!
As someone who grew up with Durian, I legit love the smell and cannot physically comprehend how people can associate it's smell with garbage and sewage hahahah
Can agree with gulai tempoyak patin (sharkfish cooked in fermented durian curry-gravy). For some reason, if you ferment the durian flesh, it would lose its pungent smell and becomes more sweet, fragrant and also an ultimate umami bomb. All my friends who hate durian, will always love any food cooked in tempoyak like gulai tempoyak patin and sambal tempoyak ikan bilis (anchovies simmered in fermented durian sambal). Oh, and petai's notoriety is not because of the smell when you cook it. It stems from what happen AFTER you eat. The moment you take a piss or poop, your toilet will definitely smell like petai lol. But be that as it may, petai is highly nutritious so I would recommend people to try this if you go to Malaysia.

Stink bean? That is one of the most addictive vege. Yes, it sounds stinking, but once you get used to it, you just can't have enough of it. Just like durian. It is also a mistake to try the "worst" rated food in a Nonya restaurant in Malaysia because the Nonya makes one of the best food in Malaysia. Its like trying the worst food in the best restaurant. That last fish dish is known as Patin Tempoyak. It is considered quite a luxury and rare delicacy as it is made of durian and Patin fish.
