The best defense is avoid fly to this airport. Excuse after excuse. SEATAC can close off the baggage area and only allow landed passengers to be there.
It's simple: Poor airport flow design. You can't keep luggage claim open to the street access... It's outrageous to hear “Don't check in bags” or “Don't put expensive items in your checked bags.” Airport, do your job!
Telling passengers the best thing to do is not check your bag at all is absolutely ridiculous. Or logical system can be implemented to stop theft in the first place. Problem solved. Treat the cause not the symptoms.
In Vancouver YVR Canada security/tag check is right where you see NO PERSONNEL by the exit near the baggage carousels. What is going on in Sea-TAC?? The next step and you're out on the sidewalk and into your car with someone else bags. WTF?
The best thing to do to keep your stuff safe? Don't fly into SeaTac period. When checking in your luggage the airport should be able to attach an apple tag of sorts that can only be retrieved out of the claim area by the claimant with the same signal and number. As a thief leaves the area a siren will go off bringing an airline security attendant to address the situation and take the bag from the thief.
They can easily implement this. They just don't want to because it will cost the airlines more money for security. LaGuardia is one of the few airports in the US that will not let you leave the baggage claim area with your bag unless the bag tag matches your claim check.
