DON’T YELL AT ME FOLKS, FOUND THIS - GOWR (Grand Order Of The Water Rats). The lyrics seem to focus on a prominent but long-deceased former leader of the GOWR, a man named Dan Leno. The Water Rats were founded in 1889 & Dan Leno was an early King Rat. Syphilis was listed on his death certificate at the age of 43/44. OR it’s about some horrible person that Freddie was inflicted by as a child at the Boarding School in India (most likely). Hmmmm

Great reaction! You should check out the live version of this song at the Rainbow 1974, it is amazing, far better then the studio version where they could not get the drums right. The song is set in Freddie's fantasy world, it is about propaganda. Bad stories are being told about The Great King Rat, because someone want to take over his position. Freddie is giving a warning that they will realize to late that it was all untrue, and that he was actually a good king. The song that really follows up on this story is My Fairy King. Queen often added vocals underneath guitar solos.

King Rat was a famous movie and novel. Here's the summary from the web: "Screen adaptation of James Clavell's best-selling novel about a group of English, American and Australian prisoners in a Singapore POW camp during World War II. When an American officer bribes the Japanese camp commanders to provide him with better living conditions, tension arises between him and his fellow prisoners."

Thanks for reaction! It was Freddie's birthday yesterday - He would have been 75 years but a legend lives forever. Love the glasses - yes they suit you! I think the song is about those who seem to be bigger than life and have people follow their word - but Freddie warns them that they are fake's - a dirty old man. The reference to the bible is similar - that some interpretations are meant to oppress others. However, no one really knows what Freddie's songs were about. He never explained them.

Ive seen a few interviews where he said they were about him expressing his emotions & hoping they connected with us & could help us in some way even if for only half an hour. It was for the connection of humanity whenever we may need it...Freddie was a beautiful soul & he is still making that connection now.

OK, so you NEVER need to apologize for stopping and replaying sections that catch your ear. 🙂 That’s the fun your followers get as you discover this great music for yourself, it’s like a validation for us. I was lifting the needle off the record and “Jacking That Back” on my turntable 47 years ago, when I was discovering the world of Queen’s music after I received both the Opera and Races albums for Christmas. We all did it, too…you just gave it a name. 😉👑

Wow! Great reaction and so good to see you back with a new one! So excited to see this song. Freddie always made a point of not explaining what his songs were about. He wanted to leave that to the listener. To me it evokes a medieval atmosphere, and I can imagine Great King Rat dressed in dirty rags with a walking stick riddled with syphilis and snarling at people but that's just me. Kind of a good versus evil song a bit like the story of March of the Black Queen. A lot of Freddies songs had a fantasy/religeous undertone and he was a master at it. Love the glasses. Don't know if you need them for vision or just want to wear them because they look cool.....they look cool! Great reaction. Ogre Battle and My Fairy King would be a natural progression I think for you. Thank you so much, you are the best 💕💕👍👍

The end bit with the religious overtones seems like the devil vs. angel singing back and forth. One bit is bad (don’t believe all you read in the Bible) then next is “you sinners get in line.” It’s like good vs evil. Just an interpretation.

My understanding.... Freddie was a Homosexual sent to a Christian Boarding School at the age of 7. Songs like Jesus, Mad the Swine and Liar definitely point to that. For me Liar is about an incident that happened in that boarding school discrbed in a letter read by his mother in Lover of Life, Singer of Songs documentary. The quote, "The Great Lord before He died, they nailed sinners by His side. He said, "You're going to realise tomorrow." references the crucifixion of Christ. I believe Freddie was very pro-Jesus and anti-religion. This is also true in many Queen songs though their entire career.
