Fighting not to cry. The fighting is soo hard, I'm onto my 2nd fight now after years of saying my son has autism he finally got his ASD in December so now it's round 2 but for my daughter who I thinks she has ADHD and ASD.
I love how you are talking it and how real it is for you and not shying away from this. It's helping me in see I'm not the only person having this feeling and just seeing you fight let's me know it's ok to fight. Pleased you have done this but I do hope you get your answers soon. 💪🤞. X

Hi Rhi could you explain into detail what you mean by high levels of autism. Do you mean she is high functioning? I'm a bit confused with as for me high levels of autism means non verbal and things like that. I know a child with high levels of autism he has no speech what so ever. He has no idea of personal hygiene or what is use of a toilet. Is still in a buggy. This child is 6 years old

Bless you Rhi, it breaks my heart hearing you have to go through all this just to access the help your child may need, no mother should have to fight this much it’s exhausting and unfair a mother knows there child best no matter how much training you may have a mother is a mother at the end of the day and consultants paediatrician junior doctors who ever they are should never doubt what a mother says. It’s a real fight believe me I truly relate. I am so pleased and happy to hear that Zara is having an assessment I know it’s not the way you hoped for but a way forward for your beautiful little girl bless her. I am dreading this fight from everything I've read but I feel like I'm going in guns blazing. So hard to get a diagnosis for girls, but I'll happily support any chance to change the way things work to make things easier for our babies. Sending so many hugs to everyone going through this ❤

How is your daughter on high level ? She speaks

    • @amy82910
      @amy82910 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just because she speaks doesn’t mean she doesn’t “qualify” or whatever to have high levels of autism. It means she shows lots of traits of autism that have all been picked up on, scored and come out as being a high level of autism. You can have high levels of autism and still be “high functioning”

My son who’s 19 now started showing signs of autism very young we set out to get answers for him to make school life easier and we didn’t get his autism diagnosis until he was 16 and had left school. It’s ridiculously hard getting a good assessment in the United States too and if the child is intelligent and verbal, they’re completely blown off by any “specialist”. The US is really behind the times with understanding the broad spectrum.

I noticed at the age 18 months something wasn't right various complaints from toddler groups then when he went to primary school they put him down as a badly behaved child got assessed at camhs when he was 7 but they did the adhd test and not the autism but ruled adhd out when he went to secondary they again thought he was a badly behaved child and was threatened being permanently excluded after 4 secondary schools later they finally realised I managed to get another assessment after another 2years on the waiting list it was then they said to me they couldn't belive he wasn't diagnosed sooner as it was very obvious ...turns out he was very good at masking it at school hence why he was missed

I tried for 8 years for my eldest daughter, we went through everything at 15 then when she was 16 we went for the results, Dr asked my daughter if she wanted a diagnosis or not and she said no and that was the end of that. Never got an answer as I wasn't allowed the answer as she was 16. She still struggles with life and everything and is undiagnosed.
My son I fought for 13 years for a proper diagnosis rather than just asd traits. I got so sick of it and him struggling massively so I went private and it took 3 months during covid!!! Done ✔️
I don't want to go through all the trauma again that I went through with the other two for my youngest and I've left it a while as she was coping but now all of a sudden she isn't so I've made a private assessment appointment for her and she's about to turn 12. We will find out in the next 3 months if she will get a diagnosis or not.
It's so hard to get a diagnosis, it's such a long wait and a long process.
My son and oldest daughter have learning disabilities too and they weren't picked up on until their teens, even though I was pointing it out from around age 8.
My children have been majorly failed by the system and the drs.
I'm so angry and in constant fight mode as all I have done for the last 13 yrs is fight for my children....I.am.so.exhausted 😪

My nephew (who lives with me) is on the good old waiting list for an ASD assessment here in England. There is a 9-12 month waiting list. Currently 6 months into that waiting list. I have been having concerns about my little girl and when I spoke to her health visitor she looked at her and said what’s her speech like? I said well you know has got a lot better since starting nursery however I’m more concerned about and she cut me off and said and I quote well if she can speak then she is fine she doesn’t have autism. I was just stood there in shock. I have spoken to her nursery teacher and she is going to keep an eye on her and let me know.

You can still see a health visitor up until the child is 10. I agree with the education side of the health part. You can actually go to your other children's doctor and get them to assess her for you I know this as my friend was in the same boat as yourself. I have pursuing theo's diagnosis for a genetic disorder and it taking forever. There always seems to be something what stops and puts a halt on it

The fight is so draining, I have been fighting since my daughter was 6 she’s now 11 and still doesn’t have a diagnosis and like Zara it’s Becasue she could communicate this was done when she was 9 and all her other diagnoses she has all come under ASD as a whole 😞 She struggled through primary school and started a mainstream secondary school September which didn’t go well and she now doesn’t have a school and now we finally have her EHCP and fighting a place in a SEN school while fighting for another autism assessment x

My sons nursery teacher recognised signs of autism his year 1 teacher didn't bother following it through cause she didn't believe in autism and said he was just lazy, she soon left after I complained about her to the head teacher but still nothing happened. I turned to social services to help cause they can push for it more and I felt I needed help as I wasn't being listened to by the school at all. This didn't happen till he was in year 4/5 but we finally got a diagnosis and now for high school he goes to a specialised school as he couldn't mainstream high school cause there was another fight for an EHCP. But he's now thriving in school and loving it for the first time ever

When my son was nearly 11 (15 yrs ago). I exhausted every direction to get him asssessed for Autism (Aspergers). In the end, through bullying by primary school teachers, i got in touch with an LEA Clinical Physcologist (CHILD) who assessed him and deemed him as too anxious for learning. So he advised that i kept him off school until further treatments and assessments. But the school disagreed and sent the Wagger Man every day. !! The school made my life a nightmare. Hold ur ground x

We actually waited less than 2 years from referral in the middle of the pandemic , I was actually expecting it to end up being much longer so I think we were definitely lucky. I have always known there was something but was always fobbed off due to her being verbal mainly and then just before her 4th birthday she had a massive increase in her anxiety and that’s when her pre-school decided to mention a few other concerns regarding her auditory processing, her isolating herself away from other children and her lack of self-care skills. Then she saw health visitor for a 4 year old ASQ and audiology to check her hearing and speech to assess her processing which all actually came back fine other than her social emotional and gross motor on the ASQ which then got her referred to the child development team , a year later she saw a paediatrician who agreed she was likely autistic (and also ADHD but that’s a whole other story!) then 3 or 4 months later we were sent the questionnaires and another few months we had a phone assessment where they asked me a million questions and a month after that they rang and said that yes they believe she was in fact autistic. It seemed way too easy once the ball started rolling. She still doesn’t have anything official put in place as far as school supports go and I can’t get anyone to accept her for assessment for the ADHD even though it’s the more obvious as far as I am concerned. It’s crazy how different the process is for each person , I know lots people who have waited much longer and haven’t got anywhere yet. I think it may have been because she was referred to the 0-5 team and she was 5.5 years when she got assessed so was about to age out the team

    • @theedenadventures
      @theedenadventures 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The actual team that did the assessment never actually met her and a lot of the evidence they used was from the 12 sheets of notes I had made and handed to the paediatrician when we met her. I was surprised she got a diagnosis , not because I don’t think she’s autistic but because I’d been told so many times that I was imagining it or there’s nothing to be concerned about or let’s just wait and see 🙃🙄

I'm on fight no2, it's tough and so draining 😪 It took us 6 years with my eldest as school couldn't give any input as they could see no evidence. Literally 30mins in to our assessment we had our asd diagnosis 🙄 Now I feel that my daughter who is now 10 may also be asd. School again saw nothing to evidence but this time atleast this time did apply to paediatrician. We live in Scotland so you can either go education route or health. Health takes longer. Although it doesn't matter as everybody's wait is around 2+ years. Its so hard as my girl has learnt ro mask very well but her anxiety can go through the roof .

As with everything medically related in the US, it is all a "you're on your own" situation for the most part to look things up and find the right people, doctors, agencies, and other groups to do anything you need unless you're very elderly, a very young child, but it still probably wouldn't include anything like autism assessment even then, or disabled in some way. If it's not a physical problem that's visible or can be seen on a medical test in a lab, it's basically ignored unless you threaten to sue someone in a lot of cases in America. I know it's almost impossible to sue people, companies, or groups in other first world nations in many cases for anything, so that will most likely not be an option for you. If you do get that far without a big legal battle over an issue, it will generally cost you a huge amount of money to get the assessment. I am not nearly as familiar with autism as most people, but the way I understand it, it will cost you at least $5,000 per child per assessment when it's all said and done. Then, you have to, probably, fight with your school for your child, unless you live in a wealthy school district or can afford to send the child to a school for those with special needs. American children are often basically left behind in a lot of cases outside of sheer luck and random opportunity because of the money issue, assuming, as I said, the parent or parents get that far. As you talk about having things become more of a burden later, it reminds me of how America, in practice, only ever spends money or does anything when there is no other choice and people in power/authority only ever do anything when forced, especially when it involves money or something they can use for political gain. Unfortunately, healthcare is one such area in the US because our right wing has brainwashed 40 percent of the US to believe that something like national healthcare is a form of evil. That's a whole other subject, however. I hope it all gets better for you and Zara and that she is assessed sooner rather than later. I really do. Much love!

I came to watch your videos after having a horrible meeting today with my son and although it's horrible for you, it's good to know I am not the only Mum being made to feel like an overbearing pain in the bum. He was referred when he was 5 and is now 9 and the consultant was not interested in any early development, only in things happening right now. Sensory issues were palmed off as being something that lots of people have (I don't refuse to wear any clothes, do you?!), intense stress at anything that involves acting or role play he said is something half the children in school will feel. I know it is different as he will stand on stage with his eyes shut looking absolutely beside himself. Honestly it was horrible. But he is getting an assessment as it seems a previous doctor already put him on the list and he is at the top now, so does that mean I have done my pestering parent duties and I can relax a little do you think? I think our situation is complicated by the fact he is also showing a lot of signs of ADHD the inattentive type, as is my daughter and those problems are interfering with school in a way his ASD traits aren't, because the ASD traits only really affect him and he expresses it all at home.

My son didn’t get a diagnosis until the summer holiday before starting year 7… he went through hell and they kept saying it was a home issue and sent me on parenting courses… the system unfortunately is very flawed

People have to fight because diagnosed children cost money! However what they dont grasp is undiagnosed children turn into undiagnosed adults who cost mental health services and adult services a lot of money unless they suffer in silence!
The statistics of adults getting diagnosed is high its awful!
Its not even like you can pay for assessment privately because if she got diagnosed its often not recognised to get the help at school etc!
Well done for fighting although im sorry you are having too! As a mother of an autistic child and having autism myself its worth the fight!

Hey Rhi, I totally get the feeling sick part I know it oh so well. I’ve and still had to fight for my child to get listen to, my eldest has ADHD and my youngest has autism, however the fight has slowed down now with my eldest he’s 18 and now being past over from CAMHS to adult mental health so time will tell with that one. With my youngest it started off great, we got referred, he was seen, straight away she said there was something definitely there so the assessment started, he got sent to the ASD board and came back he was on the spectrum (all in 2 years). He was diagnosed just after his 6th birthday, then he went up to junior school and now it’s a fight to get him the help he needs in school. School says he doesn’t need it as he doesn’t show any problems 🤨, I said that they have a very good way of masking and he could be doing that in school as when he’s home it’s totally different, I’ve also tried to explain to them that he’s like a cola bottle but they didn’t understand. He’s 8 now and we are still fighting as the school just don’t want to help. Nothing especially our children should be a fight and definitely even more so when they have a diagnosis already. I definitely agree more awareness and a position should be done as more child are being “left” once they hit the educational side of things and that’s when it started to impact them more. I really hope your not fighting for long and get the answers you know in your heart the answer is. Sending virtual hugs from one ASD mum to another, we all have to stick together ❤️❤️

It's all about cost. Blaming a junior doctor for that is shocking. You did so well not to burst into tears or lose it with frustration. Shocked by their negligence but I have witnessed this many times in schools. You need to have up to 5 separate staff with "concerns" to then provide evidence. This puts a lot of staff off sadly. Be persistent. Stay with it, and if not go private. I was never diagnosed with dyslexia. It nearly screwed up all my schooling and education. Wasn't until I was being asked to refer others that it was staring me in the face what I had. Only 1 person recognised but didn't want to offend me by suggesting that I get tested. You're an incredible mother. Strong and know what you want and need. Stick with it or go above them.

Iv been fighting for 4 years, shes 5 and half now. Even her teacher agree’s she has ASD traits but hides it and likes to please everyone, so sick of professionals saying “well a lot of 5 year olds do that” 😵‍💫

Hi Rhi, I'm pretty horrified with the fact that they have actually said Zara was able to communicate and give eye contact, so she did not meet the asc criteria?? I have a class of students who have all been diagnosed with autism, and all of my wonderful children have different behaviours and social responses. I'm shocked their knowledge of the condition is so limited 😕 I'm so sorry you are having to fight so hard for Zara. Don't give up Rhi, keep gathering as much evidence as you can, even film footage. Good luck lovely lady 😘💕

Thats how my son didn't get an autism diagnosis in the first place, I pointed out that I k ew autistic children who give eye contact but also that I'm partially deaf and lipreading, so his entire life I've taught my son to look at me when he speaks!!! So it's actually a forced habit for him and isn't natural, so angry. Since he saw an autism specialist recently, she said his eye contact isn't great and she said it was forced without me telling her any of that, she picked up on it in minutes as she knows what she's talking to. It shouldn't stop a person getting a diagnosis

Please join the SEND reform protest that’s been put together by SEND parents on Facebook, this system and the education system is not fit for purpose. My youngest has been on the ASD waiting list for 2.5yrs and is now on a part time timetable in school due to unmet needs. My local council are still refusing to add her to the priority list even though she is unable to access a full time education. Well done for fighting so hard, your children are so lucky to have you ❤

My 4year old started graduated response (Bridgend) in July... GP wouldn't even meet with me. He's obviously ASD but he's not going to be diagnosed for another 2 years. @#££ insane
Teachers have agreed he's showing all symptoms

My son is 14 I have been fighting since he was 3 he has just recently been diagnosed with autism and adhd it’s ridiculous how long it takes it’s been a battle for us no one listened now we have a diagnosis we are relieved because I believed it was just me and all in my head we have had many services involved if this was done say 5 years ago we would of known what we was dealing with and our family life probably wouldn’t have suffered as much my mental health has been affected loads
