Excellent discussion Keith; in my own career I have certainly at times treated swords more laissez faire than I should, or not explained properly how 'this should not be done at home', or what precautions are being taken off camera in case of an accident or injury.
I really am very concerned with having people downrange of any sword swing, and this is one of the reasons I have not pursued much in the way of public demonstrations for sword education/cutting. It can be difficult to secure/sequester and audience in a way that they keep on the far side of the blade.

They should use face, and neck protection on addition their body protection when they bash something like rock with the swords. They aslo could just fix one of the swords without person holding it stationary to something when they clash swords together

Yes, you are correct. A second person is not really necessary in that particular test.

In backyard cutting, brother took a giant divot out of the wood we were using as a cutting stand. It was made from an old electrical cable spool, so no great loss, but lots of swords would have broken instead of chopping right through wood.

Well said, and very important to keep saying. Chalk it up to the exuberant stupidity of youth, but the vast majority of my scars are indeed my own fault. And in my time I've had more than one weapon go on an unscheduled flight during a demo with bystanders. As our audience gets bigger, we need to be better examples.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I would just like to see less people get hurt by easily preventable mistakes.

Considering the design, do you think swords without handguards had lanyards or were they just never used to thrust?

I think the lanyard was used on Han dao, and this can allow you to thrust, though it is difficult to determine how common it was.

Well, Shad gonna make a video of why he was totally safe and your wrong and a poopoo face passively aggressive like he did to Matt Easton lol. Not a Shad hater Im a subscriber to his channel but man can he get petty.

I wouldn’t want to assume too much. And even so, my goal here is not so much to talk about Shad specifically as it is to help everyone I can improve their sword safety.

@thescholar-general5975 I wouldn't put pass him. I like his content and seem like decent person, but his fake alpha-male persona won't let him take any criticism lightly.

Shad is the biggest bullshido master of anything even tangentially related to Medieval European history. While he is a gateway for many (including myself) to learn history from more knowledgeable people, it says a lot when that happens because the other people are correcting him, and not because say he is citing more knowledgeable people to point his fans in their direction when he doesn't know enough.

@perrytran9504 I agree, when it's not his opinion and just the objective fact, his video is decent. But he throws his opinion and humor, and it just cringed and wrong.
