    Twin Turbo Diesel AWD Motorcycle (Bike & Builder episode 2) Thanks to Sam for the interview and clips of his build!
    My name is Sam Turner, I am from Atlanta, Georgia. I currently am a Diesel Technician for the United States Postal Service. When I was about 12 years old my father taught me how to use a welder, and ever since then I have been building whatever has popped in my mind. My first motorcycle was when I was 8, my father fixed up an old 70ish model Honda 50cc minibike. from there I worked my way up to a Honda 110, then a Yamaha RT180.
    I knew I wanted to use the 840cc V-twin diesel engine for my power plant, and figured that to keep it symmetrical looking, the only way to go was Twin-turbo. I tossed around the idea of double CVT's, and a Hossack front suspension. but it seemed still too mild. then the idea of Diesel electric popped up, similar to a Diesel locomotive where my engine powered a generator, then the generator could use electricity to spin a wheel motor. This is where the idea of AWD became possible. After researching the generator and wheel motors that would be capable of moving this bike, I decided against it because the costs were insanely high. Even though the diesel electric part of the build was shot down, I still wanted to try to do anything I could to keep the AWD aspect. That is when I stumbled across the idea of using hydrostatic drive. It would act basically the same way as a diesel electric, but at a fraction of the cost. I picked out a hydraulic pump and 2 hub motors, and because the hub motors are designed to only be supported on one side, I needed to design a single sided suspension for the bike. Once I drew up the idea for the suspension I saw that it would be very easy to install air bags so that the bike did not need a kick stand. At this point I began to lay all the pieces out in my garage, and once the engine, air bags, suspension and tires were lined up, the bike was over 11ft long. At 11ft long I did not want to have goofy looking long handle bars, or have to awkwardly have to stretch out over the backbone of the bike to reach the bars so I ended up building Double push pull cables that would connect the front spindle all the way to the back of the bike where the pivot point of the handle bars were. I ended up using the same setup for my hydraulic reservoir, as Triumph used for oil in the TR650. the backbone of the bike is a 4in hollow tube that stores 5 gallons of hydraulic fluid, thus eliminating the need for a bulky storage tank. Hydrostatic systems generate a lot of heat, so I installed two oil coolers on the side of the bike and fabricated two hood scoops to help re-direct the air through the cooler. I installed two 2.5 gallon air tanks on the side of the bike, and welded cones and fins on them to give them the appearance of bombs. At this point the bike started to look like some type of military experiment, so I decided to run with that theme. I installed 31x10.5 off-road tires, a heat shield down the reservoir that looked like a gun heat shied, Cross hairs on the backbone. a 2.5 gallon jerry can for a fuel tank, a 5.56 ammo can for a battery box, and painted the bike frame truck bed liner black, and the body panels Olive Drab Green. Hope y'all like it!

    As I watched your video I cringed to think about the comment section. So many keyboard fabricators foaming their opinions about how you did this wrong or change that or you are killing baby seals with the smoke or it's not safe, blah blah wine blah. I'm surprised by moderate level of intelligence here though. You built this. From scratch. In your own shop, With your own hands, using your own brain. It's wonderful and it's something that 99.9% of the trolls on TH-cam could NEVER accomplish. Very well done sir.

      +dozer1642 But couldn't it run 95% less smoke if the engine was simply tuned properly? The only time they do that is when they are spraying in way too much fuel to burn completely. Maybe he needs it to have enough power I guess. He should put on a bigger turbo.

    • @dozer1642
      @dozer1642 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +sirgallium my best guess (from a 4:54 minute clip) as to why the engine smokes the way it does is merely because its operating under heavy load all of the time. Fabricating something like this isn't a science. It's art. The fact that the engine chosen makes the darn thing go down the street at a moderate pace is a stunning success. It smokes a hell of a lot less than the ten dodge trucks with the 8" stacks that the high school kids in my town cranked up the pumps on just to be obnoxious. It's one man and his unique creation. God bless him.

      +dozer1642 The black smoke may look cool, but is a sign of incomplete combustion... so the engine doesn't run properly, at least not in this video. Seems like it's still a work in progress though.

    • @ziiofswe
      @ziiofswe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sirgallium ...Or smaller turbos? Maybe it's too low engine rpm so they don't spool up to their intended rpm.
      (I have no idea if this model of turbo is considered "small", "medium" or "large"... He also has two of them, perhaps going down to one would do the trick? (Just brainstorming a little.)

      I always do!!! I love the looks and style! but by time you get to a bike show you'll have to stop for some Cancer treatments, constant diesel exhaust exposure is so bad there's parts of Europe where they control which days u can drive into certain cities (since all cars are diesel in some places) and the cancer rate is increasing.

    First, awesome job! Really outside the box thinking. Second, I own a pre-emissions diesel truck with a tuner so I'm no stranger to rolling coal but it usually clears up once the turbo spools. I'm not an expert on diesels & turbos but I think you might have it over-turbo'd. If you cut it back to a single, or found 2 really tiny turbos, you might clean it up a bit. Roll all the coal you want at the stop light but at running speed, you should be clear(ish). Hell, old tractors didn't smoke that much under load and they did a lot more work than your asking this engine to do.
    Don't take me wrong, not bashing it or complaining about environment, blah blah blah. Only offering up a suggestion.

    Interesting setup with "clutch" and "brake", I like it! BTW since it is single speed have you thought about adding a 2nd speed by dropping to one wheel drive by cutting flow to front wheel while allowing it to recirculate so that all the flow would go to the rear doubling the speed?
    The smoke is WAY excessive, it looks like it interfers with driving...

      @aronhtgmail 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Choppertown yep a solid tune to get the smoke down an then it will be pretty cool.
      my only concern is the air ride system. if air pressure is lost while above 20 mph, isn't the frame going to drop and said rider is going to go flying with possible injury or death? air ride bikes don't lay on the ground because of this.

    • @roomwithapointofview
      @roomwithapointofview 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Choppertown What about some kind of a safety catch, I'm thinking a dog, like used on hoists, that would kick out, if you lost air. Like what would happen if a truck using air brakes lost it's air, the brakes would apply.
      Then the only issue is how do you keep the bike from falling over when you stop.
      For the smoke issue. Run straight biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil, and then the issue would become walking around smelling like a french fry. lol.
      But what about two pipes side by side out to the back, cover them with heat shield and make them look like the rear bombers guns.
      Cool bike though.

    this is a bad ass bike, the engineering behind building this bike is amazing, it's amazing how many people are worried about how much smoke comes out of it, like because of this bike the earth is going to die, first off I doubt you ride this every day, if you do the lil bit of smoke is a hell of a lot less than one big rig crossing the country let alone just going across town, they can't think of any legitimate thing to complain about with the bike so they bitch about the smoke which is something that can be fixed, still a bad ass bike

    I'm thinking that left leg would start to get hot on a long trip, might consider extending that baby and adding a heat shield.

      Actually those diesel cars or trucks can carry a lot of passengers or goods, so they play a useful role, you can't be so close to not see the difference. But here is just a biker who likes to ride in the same time polluting the nice area with his invention. Don't get ppl wrong, maybe I'm not an expert, the bike looks cool, sounds cool but the smoke is just a terrible con. Inventor made a lot of work but apprently the bike isn't completed. Period.

    • @GeneralLeeInsane
      @GeneralLeeInsane 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      China called, couldn't understand much of what they were saying. Something about knowing nothing about choking, as I could gather through the coughing.
      Diesel powers your world, it allows you to complain about these things. Semis haul freight all over the world, they do it because they can generate the power, as gasoline can't. Trains can move 12,000 tons of freight, namely the coal that is used to power your home, and everything in it. Container ships carrying goods from around the world can haul more than twice that of the trains. Diesel propels them across the miles of ocean.
      So, you want to hate on diesel? You better take a close look at the world you're sitting in. Your computer's hardware, your lights, electricity, clothing, toys, the very chair you sit on... So much of what you have now, is thanks in some part to diesel.
