Violent and sexual crime rates in Leeds over the past five years have shown significant trends and fluctuations. Data indicates Leeds consistently has a higher crime rate than the national average, with violent and sexual crimes making up a considerable portion of the total. Recent data shows that these crimes constituted around 37% of all recorded crimes in Leeds as of 2024, with approximately 41,700 incidents, though this figure represented a 9.5% decline from the previous year. Over the years, Leeds has ranked among the top areas in England for these types of offenses, particularly concentrated in neighborhoods such as the city center, Armley, Harehills, and Burmantofts, where recorded incidents often surpass 1,000 annually. Between April 2020 and March 2021, specific Leeds areas like Gipton and Harehills recorded up to 2,507 violent and sexual crimes, underscoring the challenges certain neighborhoods face. However, recent data from 2023-2024 also suggests that while rates remain high, some areas are seeing slight improvements in terms of overall crime rates. Leeds' current annual crime rate stands at about 50.2 per 1,000 people, markedly higher than the national average of 35.1, placing it among the most affected urban areas in the UK.
