They did a great job summarizing Marilyn Monroe's life on here, alluring you into the glamour that she got herself into and at the same time, humanizing her with those sad undertones ("someday she'll think twice..."). Karen and Ivy were both phenomenal. One sounds soft and innocent while the other sounds wild and worldly. Also, great emphasis on Norma's transformation to Marilyn in which Karen embodies Marilyn's old self and Ivy embodies her Hollywood, worldly persona.
Everyone needs to realize that Karen is a metaphor of Marilyn. The way she wanted to become famous and started out sweet and innocent and sort of 'hardened' along the way to ultimately become famous.
SMASH (season one) was excellent. The rivalry between Karen and Ivy, the behind the scenes triumphs and problems of the cast, and most of all the development of the Broadway musical "Bombshell" - all these elements combined to make a riveting story. I was rooting for Karen (sweet and smart) but Ivy (hot and sneaky) made the best Marilyn Monroe. Would love to have a DVD of season one. Always trying to decide which is my favorite song.
Smash was a great show on NBC but as usual they always cancelling something..anyways this was my favorite song on smash because I loved hearing Katharine and Megan sing together their voices have always complimented each other on the show when they did duets plus the belt they both did at 2:14 was awesome..Megan's voice kind of outdid Katharine's voice by a small margin her voice has more power to it,since she's an actual Broadway Singer so she's great at her belting,Katharine's voice is strong too but she was kind of overshadowed, but they both sounded great together..but just imagine Megan and Jennifer Hudson doing this song when she guest starred in season 2 this song would've been one word..EPIC...anywho these two ladies did this song wonderfully.
Absoltuly brillant ! This song, all songs, the serie, the cast, the construction , all love it ! Just in time in France to see something else that rain in Paris. Can wait for the diffusion on tv , so I bought the season on I tunes. History is made one of my favorite
I'm now watching the first two(and only) seasons of SMASH on DVD and loving it. I wish I would have caught it sooner as I'm sure many others are who are now regretting it's cancellation by NBC. I guss it was too good to appeal to the "reality show" masses.
Marilyn Monroe is a stage name she took on when she started to become popular and preform in various things. Norma Jean was the name she was born with. Hope this helped!
Thanks! I waited till I was alone & then let it rip, I felt better XD Now I just miss the hell out of the stage....With my 10 yr reunion around the corner its good to know I can still hit those notes :)
This is my song. I wish I could have sang this song at the school talent show. I didn't get in. They said that they needed more of a song that was "in the now." There's only one problem, I'll never stop singing.
I agree with you for the most part! Their vocies are so beautiful together but in terms of who deserves the part of Mariyln most people are chooseing sides and I don't think that chooseing one side over the other is trashing one but showing your preference. Everyone is entitled to that.
I agree with you. I don't know about the range; I think Karen's go higher. Not sure if her range is wider but she can definitely hit higher notes with more ease than Ivy can. At the same time, I love the strength and confidence Ivy sings with. Karen's songs, while beautiful, makes me want to cry all the time, no matter what she is singing. Ivy's songs fill me with hope and makes me feel like I could take on the world.
i was so happy because Karen got to play that role.. that is clearly shown every good poeple that have a big dream with her effort will achieve her dream.. and Ivy deserve on what she done before this.

Something about this song makes a tear form in my eye. It shows the obvious rise to fame of Marilyn but also the Ivy's and Karen's rise to fame and the dream of being the star. I think it's a perfect song and the girl's sing it beautifully.
Okay, am I the only one thinking that they have ALL these amazing songs, (yes do we all agree?) and a great storyline that they should just turn this into an ACTUAL musical on broadway with like the actors from the show in it and everything? they have the choreography, music, some script i mean i would SO go see it just because I watch the show! It's actually perfect.
For example. I was in the orchestra in high school and played second chair first violin to Ben Jackson. When we did musicals that had a violin solo He and I both had to learn them. Because if for some reason he wasn't able to make it to a show, I was his understudy meaning I would fill in for him which I did twice. It's kinda like a back up plan so to speak.
This song is beautiful and very relateable! I want to be a star someday but my parents will never be bahind me. I just want someone to see my talents and no one has ever noticed. Let Me Be A Star!
Katharine McPhee is a pop singer. Megan Hilty is a Broadway performer. Thus, Ivy should have the lead in the broadway musical, and Karen should end up with some sort of record deal. Both are amazing, but Ivy should definitely be Marilyn. Her voice sounds better in the songs, and she certainly can relate to Marilyn.
I definatly see the life of MM played out in IVY from start to finish. But I love the in depth thought process in this name relationship................
I think that the fact of Karen being the small town girl and original "protagonist" people root for her. Which is great, she's amazing and I root for her. Buuut I love broadway musical acts and Megan Hilty (Ivy) makes my toes curl. She's beautiful, gracefully and talented overall. TEAM IVY:)))
I -3 this song! I wish I could hit all the notes but my voice gets tired near the end :( but once I get it down I will prob belt it out whenever I get the chance lol
Everytime I hear this... It hurts. I think its the 16 yr old version of me trying to claw her way out of my heart & sing this at the top of her lungs. *sighs*
Honestly i love that Karen got the part and yes we all know that Ivy portrays Marilyn beyond perfectly in every aspect of her life and how she sounds, but the difference IMO is that Karen adds her own twist to "playing" Marilyn in Broadway and yes i do believe her voice is MADE for Broadway, Karen can do everything Marilyn but add her own flare and she is just different and no pop-generic crap but then again this is just me
Karen sounded and looked more like marilyn. Ivy's voice was... dare i say- too powerful for marilyn monroe. THAT BEING SAID. i did personally prefer ivy to karen, but i get why they did it the way they did

I get chills when I listen to this song. This is terrific songwriting.

Meghan Leanne. 😪my choir director was talking about this today and about Marilyn Monroe
We're actually going to sing this in our pops concert

I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it on smash over 4+ years ago.
I love this song. Both have gorgeous voices on their own but together it is magic.

When I watch this show I sometimes feel like I'm watching segments of a movie or even a play. My heart breaks with all the cliffhangers of each 'act'.
i love the concept of this song.
LOVE this song!!

What an amazing answer! But so true! Dont let yourself be stopped through inhibitions! You are your own leader! =)
I love this song! Karen truly is a star.
As a 16 year old (for the last day!) I did just that! I will never stop singing, no matter how terrible it sounds because I just love it :P
yeah you said it pretty well yourself. I completely agree. nicely put.
Thanks!!!

I watched Smash for just a few episodes! I wish I watch it till the end :(
You probably are. Don't let professionals like this knock you down. Keep trying. At most of all DON'T GIVE UP.

I cannot tell you how many times I have listened to this song and sang along with it!
I love Ivy!
I raped the replay button.
Thank God for it though!
I definatly see the life of MM played out in IVY from start to finish. But I love the in depth thought process in this name relationship................
@MadamXtinagurl Your sooo right I enjoy both voices in every moment they have the stage on screen.
Hey. Still love this sing

Only the first half of the first season-episodes 16-whatever will be back probably sometime in the fall.
That last note... If only I could hit it. Who knows. Gimme a shot at it. :)
Like this song
Good song. Brilliant song. It makes me want to sing it, and I do. I just hope for the sake of the people surrounding me that I get better at singing.
Have you been watching the show? or did you just come upon this song?
Smash is a show?
It was a show....it got cancelled only after two seasons....it was heartbreaking
this song is so cool
please, do more lyrics from smash
Exactly!
Ivy should have gotten Marilyn and Karen should have got a recording contract or something, her voice isn't made for broadway.
@NBCSmashOfficial How lucky. I am loving Smash
I'm gonna use this song to audition for my HS glee club/choir next year
When does season 2 start... Anyone know? :) I love this show!
Everytime I hear this... It hurts. I think its the 16 yr old version of me trying to claw her way out of my heart & sing this at the top of her lungs. *sighs*
smash is so much more down to earth compared to glee
And without all the auto-tune. Amazing performances.
I would probably fly from Finland to New York just to see it.. :D
I want to see this as an actual musical prduction!

Urgh just so amazing like wow
Trivia question. Which American Idol beat Katherine Mcphee while she came in second?
What song!!
Megan Hilty is amazing. Totally my idol.
I love it3
you know, it would not have been perfect with that. it's perfect the way it is
someone make a instrumental version of this song!!
Haha omg!? GOOD LUCK!!!! Hope it goes well!
