The way Ivy plays Marilyn as an actress is spot on. However, Karen's voice matches Marilyn better. Go listen to Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend. Marilyn Monroe's voice wasn't all that powerful, and Ivy tends to belt in every song.
When she first started singing this song, I thought, "stereotypical motivational song." However, by the end, I loved it and wanted it on my iPod immediately. I'm Team Ivy, but Karen did a stupendous job.
When you look to the heavens with someone you love And a light's shining bright from afar, Hope you see my face there, And then offer a prayer, And please, let me be, let me be the star. I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!
This song was obviously written for Karen! Her voice, her different textures and tones Made the song. The writters are truly spectacular. The instrumentation is absolutely extraordinary and complents Katherines voice. I see her making it big time from this. The season finale solidified her star power. Her voice is phenomenal and people are just seeing the peak of her career. Big things to come, I cant wait! Thank you fir posting all these tracks!
The cutest part is (not just the fact that they look SO good together and have such electrifying chemistry) but the fact that he was the ONLY person who has believed in her from the start even when she didn't believe in her own self. If that's not love I don't know what is.
Thank you so much for the vid. And K. McPhee, you went beyond knockin it out of the park. You knocked it up to the heavens. Yes, you can be my star! God bless. And long live Marilyn M. xox
Very inspirational song. it has a lot of meaning to it, how throughout life there will always be people who will never appreciate who you truly are and they will always want to change you to have you be what they want. I think that this song tells that kind of person and how you need to be yourself and not want to change for anyone's sake.
Hey fans, it's only just begun. Katharine, Shaiman and Wittman, Jack Davenport, Christain Borle, Debra Messing, and the show itself will rake in the trophys come September. Once that happens the rest of the country will be compelled to watch the show. I am buying 10 copies of the season on DVD and giving them as Christmas presents. This show is real TV magic and the rest of the world needs to know.
I often cry during songs in musicals. This was a song that had my sobbing by the time she got to "...yet they paid 50 cents for my soul..." What an amazing song. I loved all the songs in BOMBSHELL. Now...somebody needs to really do a play of that. Of course, Katherine or Megan would have to play the lead. Beautiful!! Thank you for posting it. Now I can just play it over and over and keep on crying.
While being able to be powerful in the right proportion... Her emotion in this song was spot on. She showed restraint when it was time for that and then let us have it at the end... Don't forget me, the way she sung this will def not be forgotten!!
The line is actually "let me be that star" . You can get the sheet music and if you understand what she means by that last line you'll see it makes more sense.
That is very perceptive. Thanks for seeing something I never even thought about. Marilyn's life has elements that are in these characters lives now. The choices she made are the choices every actress must take...for the good or bad.
Oh God, hearing it the first time was so beautiful. I'm glad Katharine was able to sing this, it's like I'm hearing her soul and I really felt Marilyn in this too. ;o;
Karen was always my favorite and she brought Marilyn justice :) sad to see such an awesome show come to a season's end. This song was absolutely amazing. It brought me to tears.
I can't understand why people don't understand that they are both talented singers. Ivy (Meagan's) voice is too heavy for this song. Karen (Katharine's) voice is lighter, pure... It fits for this song and role which she totally owned! And to the comment below that her voice was getting tired. That's ridiculous. It's called using her voice and making fit with Marilyn's. This was Katharine's moment and she shined. It was a complete SMASH and I loved every second of it! Stop listening to it of you
I just finished to see again this serie. And in fact, the serie finishes with the season 1. No need to see season 2. I won't see it. Now, I download this soundtracks and i listen them in my car. Just I love Marylin. Just I love Broadway. Just I love Smash Specially, SmashSongs1. Thank's to you Thank's to Theresa Rebeck to create this beautiful serie.
This song is incredible and Katherine Mcphee is just outstanding! I was on the fence before as to who should be Maralyn She was stunning in the finale- completely won me over! This is by far my favourite song from the series Just incredible!
This song makes me cry...It makes me feel bad for Marilyn!:( It's such a sweet song tho...I feel liek that is exactly what she is thinking up there in heaven right now. We miss you Marilyn :(♥
It was about time people started ruining this beautiful song with stupid comments and competitions about who's better...Quit it and enjoy! Everyone's got an opinion!
now THIS is how you end a Broadway musical and pay tribute to Ms. Monroe. i kind of like how they had the storyline about not having a good ending, so that we didn't get this awesomeness until the actual season finale.
This song is amazing! Chills! Karen was the right choice. Derek was right! BTW that little moment they had before she sang melted my heart. I do think he has fallen for her! I want them together! Hopefully Karen will fall for him too. Cannot wait for season 2!
I know that when they started making the show they did get the rights to a Broadway show for 'Smash' itself. There has been some talk about making Bombshell a musical but no one has worked one it. They are too busy with getting season 2 up and running. I would be fine if they wanted to do both. :P
Trying to talk sense into a TH-cam comment thread is like...well, I'm not coming up with an appropriate simile but GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. Anyway, to me one of the interesting things about Smash is how at various times I was rooting for Karen and at others I was rooting for Ivy. Deeply flawed show overall, but I'm hooked!
Hi I hope to put some insight. I was glad that Karen got Marilyn. Broadway is hard to get into and for someone who is green to get the lead is amazing. Everything you see in this show is basically to a T about how Broadway works. I only hope this show helps show people that Theatre is a tough business and can be mostly about politics. Its a lot of work to put on a musical, I know I've been in plenty in Community Theatre, and hope to be on Broadway one day. This song is also beautiful!! Thank You
2019! Still gives me goose bumps... And tears... Oh the tears
2022...the same. Best song of the series.
Same here!!!
One of my top favorite shows ever!!!!! Love it with all my life 😢. Cant believe its over 10 years 😭
I don't know why they never made Smash a real Broadway show!!
Edit: I mean Bombshell
2020. Won't forget you, smash 🖤
I'm obsessed with this song. Smash has the most amazing songs.
This finale had me in tears. So amazing!
They thought they could dispose of me
They tried to make me small
I suffered each indignity
But now rise above it all
Yes, the price I paid
Was all I had
But at last I found release
And if something good can come from bad
The past can rest in peace
Oh, if you see someone's hurt
And in need of a hand
Don't forget me
Or hear a melody crying from some baby grand
Well, don't forget me
When you sing Happy Birthday to someone you love
Or see diamonds you wish were all free
Please, say that you won't
I pray that you don't forget me
But forget every man who I ever met
Because they only live to control
For a kiss they paid a thousand
Yet they paid fifty cents for my souls
They took their piece
The price of fame
That no one can repay
Ah, but they didn't buy me
When they bought my name
And that is why I pray
That when you see someone's hurt
And in need of a hand
You don't forget me
Or hear a melody crying from some baby grand
Well, don't forget me
When you sing Happy Birthday to someone you love
Or see diamonds you wish were all free
Please, say that you won't
I pray that you don't forget me
There are some in this world
Who have strenght on their own
Never broken or need of repair
But there are some born to shine who can't do it alone
So protect them and take special care
Take care
And don't forget me
Please, take care
And don't forget me
When you look to the heavens with someone you love
And a light shining bright from a far
I hope you see my face there
And then offer a prayer
And please, let me be
Let me be the star.
I seriously wish they didn't cancel this show! Like wtf?! SO good!
It's a tv show called Smash about the making of a musical called Bombshell.
As a fan of Ivy but as fan of both Megan and Katherine, This song is Mcphee's al the way. She did a beautiful job and I love her voice when she belts.
The way Ivy plays Marilyn as an actress is spot on. However, Karen's voice matches Marilyn better. Go listen to Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend. Marilyn Monroe's voice wasn't all that powerful, and Ivy tends to belt in every song.
I had to sing this song today as my Glee Audition and I loved it ~ Placed First and qualified for nationals!
When she first started singing this song, I thought, "stereotypical motivational song." However, by the end, I loved it and wanted it on my iPod immediately. I'm Team Ivy, but Karen did a stupendous job.
This is one of the best songs I've ever heard! Katharine McPhee has one of the most beautiful voices. A true STAR!
When you look to the heavens with someone you love
And a light's shining bright from afar,
Hope you see my face there,
And then offer a prayer,
And please, let me be, let me be the star.
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!

I just love this song, wow she sounds amazing here and the lyrics are incredible! best show ever!
The cutest part is (not just the fact that they look SO good together and have such electrifying chemistry) but the fact that he was the ONLY person who has believed in her from the start even when she didn't believe in her own self. If that's not love I don't know what is.
These writers are a lot smarter than we all thought.. thanks for the info!
i only started watching this in the early days on the pandemic. it was such magic.the music of both seasons i will always hold close.
Thank you so much for the vid. And K. McPhee, you went beyond knockin it out of the park. You knocked it up to the heavens. Yes, you can be my star! God bless. And long live Marilyn M. xox

this should be a real Broadway show... i don't know about anyone else, but i would definitely go watch it!
She nailed it. So beautiful. Well done, Miss Cartwright, well done.
Goosebumps spread across my whole body at the crescendo at the end. God, this was gorgeous.
The emotion in her voice from 2:33 -2:35. Absolutely amazing.
While being able to be powerful in the right proportion... Her emotion in this song was spot on. She showed restraint when it was time for that and then let us have it at the end... Don't forget me, the way she sung this will def not be forgotten!!
How did this woman not win American Idol? She's so amazing and lovely. Can't wait for season 2!

I can't wait for season two!!!!!!!!!! What the audience thought of the performance! And what happened to the fiancée! Everything! So excited!l!! Lol

This song next to the 'Let me be your star' in my opinion is the best song in 1st season of Smash.
Katharine was amazing in this song
I just love this song do much! It's so beautiful and powerful! :D I've been humming it ever sense I saw the episode!
I hope these people know how blessed they are. What I wouldn't give to be able to sing like that!
This song is amazing. It blows me away.
Katherine was born for this role. I have binged watch this show twice. Only Broadway lovers will appreciate this show.

I thought exactly the same!! I totally agree with your vision of these two characters :D
Most Epic song of Smash EVER! Karen did a superb job of Marylin!
MAN! This may be even more powerful than LMBYS, and they both killed that one in the pilot. I would have never thought it could be topped.
You are my hero - thanks!
Who still listen to this song in 2018? ¿Quién sigue escuchando esta canción en 2018?
Héctor Isaac Rodríguez Cornejo I’m listening in 2018! ¡Estoy escuchando en 2018!
I listen to it all the time. Wish it would return to t.v.
I don't care whatever say, that last since was epic, it was a Bombshell!!! I loved it XD
All the songs in smash are amazing whoever the song writers are they are amazing with the combination of her voice and the instrumentals..... 3
Katharine is a trained musical theatre actress. She graduated from the Boston Conservatory school of Musical Theatre.
This song is incredible and Katherine Mcphee is just outstanding! I was on the fence before as to who should be Maralyn She was stunning in the finale- completely won me over! This is by far my favourite song from the series Just incredible!
I saw all Smash's episodes this week! What can I say? I in love with Karen

This song alone makes me wish that this were a musical that I could go see on Broadway for real!

2021 and still gives me goosebumps
This song is like a mesh up of all the other songs. I don't know, it's just the way I see it. But I love it so very much!
Move aside 'Let mE Be Your Star' and 'History is Made at Night'. Bombshell has a new song that rises above all others.
Beautifully said :)
