The story of my Orchid Phalaenopsis Mini Mark

  • So this is the story of my orchid Phalaenopsis Mini Mark. Yes, he is a Phal, but I just love him :) no matter how much unimpressed I am by Phals, this guy is the exception.
    The problem is that he suffers from some sort of infection which I cannot properly diagnose, nor do I think I can treat, but I suspect can be overcome by the orchid. Or at least I hope.
    My dilemma is should I take him with me and risk the well being of other orchids, or should I just give up on him? Hard decision. What should i do?

    They are indeed hard to find in the US. People often kill them too because of over-watering. Both parents of the Mini Mark do not like wet roots and will rot if the roots are kept wet for more than 3 days and it temps of 65 or below. I grow them spag in clay pots like my neos. The clay a speeds up the moss dry time. I let them stay dry for 3 days and then water again. If you are in the US. Peter Lin of Big Leaf Orchids in Texas imports them. Had been looking for one since 2017 so I ended up buying several.

    I agree that this is a really hard decision, but you've had it for years, and its still alive and blooming :) I say you should keep him with you and just you said, just keep him in the house, where the disease won't spread to the other orchids :)

      +Sean Chen yes he does seem to be a fighter and if he really is, he has great chances to overcome his sickness :)

    Take him with you. 1. wash the stippled leaves in warm water. 2. Insecticidal soap. Horticultural oil. Orthene. Now if that seems to overwhelming or too chemical, get fresh goats milk and apply a thin film on the top leaves only; this will be a healing band-aid.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +diana thompson thanks for the recipe :) sadly these leaves will die pretty soon due to the extreme damage so even if wounds heal, the leaf is too damaged to survive for too long.

    I love your mini mark! Ever since I saw it on your channel I've had my eyes set on it. Love the orange and the whole character it has. Still waiting for my flipping moment when I get to own one. Take it with you and keep it in your collection!!!!

    hallo Danni, as I understood you are not completely sure whether it is a virus or not. maybe my following questions will help you decide whether to take it with you or not: is your mini mark a vigorous grower? does he have problem to produce new roots? does he have a good developed root system? how are the flowers: do they have deformations, color breaks etc? do they last long or not? often bud blast? So if the only problem of your mini mark are the markings on the leaves, I would definitely keep the orchid, because whatever it can be, the orchid is strong enough to defeat its disease. If the orchid is a poor grower, no matter how you try to help it, it wont perform as good as a similar healthy orchid. I discarded almost all my virused orchids because they were poor growers and their flowers lasted only for a couple of days, or they had color breaks etc. Why do I need to keep sick plants if they dont perform well? But i still have one virused cattleya left (also have kind of emotional attachment to it). It grows well. nice roots, flowers reliably every year, the only problem after a week or so you can see slight streak markings on its flowers. Anyway it is a good idea to keep your mini mark separately till you find out what it is. Hope that will help you :)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +NinaVanini Hi Nina, that is a very good point and yes my virused orchid were not vigorous at all. This guy is, he came back to life quit well after losing his leaves so.. I think I will just give him a chance :) thanks for the encouragement!

    absolutely take it, because even if you order another one, chanses are that it will not have yellow shades on the petals, it will be all white with orange spots. That's my opinion, if it will become so bad you want to trow it out, maybe you could give it away to a orchid nursinary and they could polinate the flowers and make some fresh plants for yourself and for the market, so you could be paid as well for that :)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vytautas Poška thanks for the advice :) well I think by pollination I will spread the disease so.. no propagation for him :P but yep I think I'll take him and study the disease further :)

    I don't have advice on the possible virus/damaged leaf, but I do think that he would be worth saving and keeping in a room in your house and seeing how he behaves there, rather than throwing him away! He has obviously shown you the potential to be "normal" so I'd say keep him! I just recently bought one from EBay so mine is wishing yours good health!

    I wouldn't worry about it. Those silvery patches are probably just chlorotic patches produced by mechanical damage to the cells by the spider mites feeding, and the symptoms don't appear to present in the flowers. I'd take the little guy, and you can always isolate it for a season if you're uncertain about it (just to see if the damage continues to appear, even with the spider mites controlled).

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Pogue Mahone U know, I read some articles suggesting that is just a cell agglomeration produced by the orchid to protect herself from the damage.. but then you read this www.staugorchidsociety.org/PDF/SAOSNewsletter201002.pdf page 7 .. so you have no idea what it really is.. no one does :)))

    As you love this orchid I would say take it with you, The new leafs look clear of this infection, And the older ones will fall off sooner or later, And the plant is otherwise healthy, As from that you said its difficult to find, So at least wait till you find a replacement, Otherwise you may end up regretting your decision to dump it, :-)

    • @MissOrchidGirl

    Hello Dani! This is my first time commenting to one of your videos but I've been watching them for about an year now. That's when I got my first orchid and wanted to learn all about them. Thanks to you I never had a casualty and I even managed to save a couple of too well-watered presents. Thank you.
    Regarding the Mini Mark, I think those are just healed wounds of where the mites munched on and I suspect that once you get rid of the little critters the new leaves will come up healthy. I have a similar looking leaf on one of my phals because it got wounded by a cactus :D (I've re-potted it and leaned it towards a dense needled cactus-now it looks like it has freckles all over that leaf). Anyways, I would like to see the progress on the little guy after you get rid of the mites also, so please keeeeep him. :D

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +KelevRa G Hello, thank you for commenting and watching my videos :) you are right, it is a good opportunity to study his evolution as long as I keep him away from everyone else and get rid of the mites. Think that is what I will do, if other people will go through this at least I will know what to tell them and how to get rid of the problem if it is solvable :) thanks for the feedback!

    PS By a mad coincidence I was given a Mini Mark two days ago. I fell in love with it when my friend ordered one from Schwerter in last September's order and I had to mind it, in flower, for her for about a month :)

    Hey Danny, I think as long as you keep him in quarantine there should be no risk of contamination to the rest of your collection, especially if you're not keeping him in the greenhouse. You seem to have a special attachment to this guy so give him a chance, worst that can happen is he gets sick and you have to throw him away, but at least you know you gave him a chance. I cut every individual blossom once you mix your poly resin . Oh but first buy those flexible ice cube trays made out of like rubber and put a thin coat of vaseline in the mold and then mix your polyresin and fill mold half way and place the flower facing you and the pour the resin over it enough to cover the flower then if you need to adjust the flower use a tooth pick but you must hurry before the resin starts to cure and let dry .

    • @MissOrchidGirl

    I tought virus infections on orchids affected the flowers as well. Am I wrong? This is what I red anyway. This lead me to think that this is not a virus, so that it may be treatable with a systemic fungicide or bactericide.

      +Cam M Hi, well not all viruses and not all the time :) the most common viruses, the orsv and cymv can show signs on flowers, not all the time. this however is an unknown virus / fungus.. www.staugorchidsociety.org/PDF/SAOSNewsletter201002.pdf page 7 though what they say is a bit wrong but.. as you can see, they have no idea what exactly it is either since they don;t know that plants don;t die from it :P

    With all you've been through lately with your mite problem and being in the process of breaking down everything for transport to Cy, I wouldn't take a chance (gamble) and would send the plant to the bin straight away without a second thought... Just not worth it, in my opinion. Why even subject yourself to the worry; fear of what can easilly happen at this stage of the game; during transport and upon relocation... Good luck in whatever you decide.. :)

However this can also be a good opportunity to figure out how this disease acts and just study it further.. since internet doesn't give a straight answer I am a bit intrigued by it.. so maybe if I keep it in the bedroom or something it would work, I am just not ok with not knowing what is going on :P if I manage to make the infection disappear I could help other people or at least have an idea what causes it and if orchids can survive it.. hmmm not sure.. I mean yes I had enough drama.. but then again what if other people go through this as well and don't know how to solve the issue and what causes it and they just lose orchids too. That's my dilemma :))

      +Carlos Daniel Velez Loyola thank you :D well I am not ok with sending diseased orchids to my viewers and there is a chance it will not make it over the border, each country has its own rules and legislation when it comes to shipping live things :(

      MissOrchidGirl Jejeje :D You can name it Dr. Lecter and put it on a warden case. That way it will be isolated and perfectly fine and poses no risk for your other orchids :D

    What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. This is the principle of vaccination. So if your plant survives, it will be better able to fight off a future infection from this virus(?)/ microbe.

      +DrinkingStar yep it would be awesome if he starts producing anti bodies for this infection at some point :)))

    Hi! your Mini Mark is really lovely and while i wish i knew enough to give you some advice im just a happy orchid fan with little knowledge about this paticular subject unfortunatly :( I do have a question for you if you have time that is ;) I have this really nice Phalaenopsis ive been keeping for over a year now and i think its a bit loony, shes been blooming non stop (well taking a little break making a new flower branch or buds but constantly working on flowers) she has her old spike that has a new active brach (cut of what had withered of it) a "old" new flower spike thats like 6months or so and shes making two new ones! told you shes loony, she has started being a bit droopy in the leaves and im worried shes blooming her self to death :s now my question is should i cut some of the spikes to stop her using so much energy, or just let her go on?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Umla80 She sounds like a great bloomer, some orchids are genetically predisposed to this, I had a phal blooming for a year and a half constantly :) now about the limpy leaves, that is a bit worrying. Ok before doing anything check the root system and see if it is ok, you can see it through the pot. Also try to offer a bit more water, all the spikes and flowers take a lot of sap to form so she might just be drinking more water than what she used to. So first, before cutting anything, give her a soak (submerge the pot into a bowl of water, just until the rim of the pot, don't submerge all the orchid), leave it for 10-15 minutes, drain it and put it back in its place. This will soak the roots and bark. The next day the leaves should look better. And keep an eye on it to see when it dries, when it is dry or almost completely dry, soak again. Now if soaking and watering a bit more often doesn't help then yes, I think she is exhausting herself and cutting one of the spikes from the base will help. But first make sure roots are ok, if they are not, then it's a different story all together. Hope this helped :)

    Where do spider mites come from?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thanh Ha well usually they come from a new plant that had the infestation and spread it to the other orchids, it is a pretty common pest so any plant at the store can have it.

  • @helleasc
    @helleasc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Definately not - in my opinion. You can buy one here, and they have gorgous orchids. Last time I checked, I wanted half their stock:

      @annathornburn4716 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MissOrchidGirl I've ordered from them twice and I've been pretty pleased with them! You'll find a lot of plants have two separate prices and the lower always is the smaller plant which is what I ended up with. I have only lost one orchid from them which was a masdy but that was my own fault and not them! I'd order from them again definitely :-)

      +jai mac oh tissue culture, this is an area I have no expertise on and probably not the proper tools to do :))) it would be fun to try it one day though :P

    • @gardengnomejay4122
      @gardengnomejay4122 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is easier than it sounds. You need a sterile area with flask( any container with s lid and tissue medium) sterilized take your choice of plant to propagate sterilize it and place in flask seal it and place in a warm area where it will get day and night(type/strength does not matter it just wants to know when it is day amend night) the rest is just time. To bad I don't live closer to you or could send the spike to me to do for you: (
