      Depends! DIY can range from shockingly bad to highly competent. I work in a technical field and receive electrical safety training. I am not a qualified electrician but I do understand lighting and power circuits, current ratings, earthing, and how to make safe and secure terminations. It sounds very arrogant but I do consider myself competent to do my own electrical work that is allowed within part P. However clearly there are some absolutely terrifying examples of DIYers (and trades people) who shouldn't be allowed to change a light bulb, let alone work on electrical systems.

      @@rossthompson1635 what would you do if something you did is notifiable mate, do you go down the route of building control etc am I right in thinking that by law you should not touch electrics diy, as if say you fit a simple light or replace a simple socket, and something went wrong you are screwed and insurance would not pay you out 🤷‍♂️ been told by a few sparks that “oh it’s illegal to touch electric same as gas” then others have said, crack on you can do what you want it’s not even regulated 😂 thing is I darent even change a light fitting to a decorative one in my house as I’ve been told it’s illegal etc . Even tho I would say I’m competent, yep I understand I can not do a MWC with schedule of tests as I don’t have a mft and all the kit etc

      @@kingofthetrowel1725 I wouldn't do notifiable work - which is sometimes frustrating as before Part P I would have done work in my own home that is now classed as notifiable. There are works that you can do legally, but even so people need to be competent to do safely.

      I've seen it be done well, very well, bad and very bad. Most bad ones are done by people who thinks they know what they are doing. Oh and I'm bias since I'm a qualified and licensed electrician. Here in Finland you're not legally allowed to do much electrical work if you're not trained and qualified. You can make a single phase extension cord, change the cable and plug on a single phase appliance, connect lights to an existing ceiling box.

    The issue with the downlighter is surely the cable clamp not being on the outer and not that the single insulated wires are visible. If the test is that the single core insulation must not be visible, pretty well every ceiling rose in my house would fail (all put in by an electrician at some point) as a certain amount of the single bare wires go back into the ceiling cavity in pretty well every case.

    On cooker switches and sockets - I've found instances of cooker switches with sockets where grease and water has got into the socket because they're too close (but in spec) to the cooker and cooking has messed them up, particularly common in rental properties where tenants maybe don't care so much and don't use the extractor or the extractor is asthmatic (as they tend to be). You get fun little arc faults in them and they're a definite fire hazard - sure, just plain switches too but a socket IMO is more points of ingress and more risk of it happening. Good job for AFDDs though.. Also it's quite common for the cooker circuit to have no RCD protection, one to watch out for with socket+switch setups.

    I have a feeling that 3 core was wired with black sleeved brown for the switch and grey as neutral before the client had a play. As most of the time we try to avoid black being neutral post colour change.

      I can imagine the client jumping on in, disconnecting everything with the "how hard can it be to change a switch" attitude then having a errr moment as he tried to remember where everything was before disconnecting it without any reference pictures, notes, tags or any idea how any of the wiring works.

    Hi Guys. Here in Australia, it is illegal for anybody to carry out any electrical work themselves, unless you are a fully qualified electrical contractor. That takes in tasks such as touching/altering anything to do with power points, light switches, adding any wiring or wiring alterations, anything to do with meter boards etc. Simple tasks such as changing light bulbs and adding on a four into one power board are OK of course.
    That said, the irony is that anyone can walk into any hardware store in Australia, and purchase switch gear, sockets, any type of flex cable etc, without question or restriction. Given that the laws in Australia state that you cannot carry out any electrical work DIY, then hardware stores need to stop selling these products to the general public. One approach could be for any shopper to show proof that he or she is a licensed electrical contractor at the point of sale at the hardware shop, when purchasing these items.
    Your laws in the UK seem to be more relaxed on this topic, regards DIY workers carrying out certain electrical jobs themselves. I guess the downside to some allowable DIY electrical work to be performed by the general public, can bring on issues such as dodgy unsafe wiring, that can lead to electrocutions, and dwellings potentially burning down. I have noticed that a few UTube electrical channel shows include instructions and procedures in the professional electrical wiring of power points, light switches, rewiring or upgrading metre boxes etc. Does this then provide encouragement and a basic education for the DIY brigade to perform this kind of work best left to professional electricians. Food for thought there people!

    • @jamesherbert8391
      @jamesherbert8391 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’m not an electrician but I do have a scientific/technical background. Changing a socket outlet, light switch, or light fixture, assuming the wiring remains like for like, is child’s play… not messing around with anything more difficult than that though!

    • @austinvert8626
      @austinvert8626 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamesherbert8391 Hi James. Given your background, gives you a distinct advantage over most DIY er's to carry out the work you have listed, but there are a lot of folks that attempt this kind of work with little to no knowledge with the basics of correct and safe wiring ciurcut procedures, trunking, earthing, testing etc. This is where the main problem lies with the general public, which brings on unwanted accidents and deaths, and destruction of property. I am not an electrician myself. With all due respect to yourself, i feel that any countries government can't play it with an each way bet. By that i mean, if you let the public perform some of the jobs of qualified electricians, as in the UK, then you will end up with ongoing unwanted consequences. In my opinion, it's better for a Government to make it illegal for the general public to perform any kind of electrical work, like here in Australia, and at the same time police the sale of electrical components over the counter of all hardware stores and electrical trade sales outlets. I know that in Australia, many people cheat the system, but the materials from hardware stores, and perform electrical work themselves to save money. If their house burns down, it will be investigated for non compliant electrical work, and if proven, will void any insurance payout with the loss of their property.We get our share of deaths and property loss each year from unqualified electrical work carried out by unqualified people.

    • @martyndavies1482
      @martyndavies1482 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the UK, if you are not qualified to work on electrics but you have, you should notify your council buidling control you have made a change and they will come and inspect it before you energise the circuit. So whilst its not illegal to work on your own home, its also been made reasonably easy to have it checked for a small or even no cost.

    • @austinvert8626
      @austinvert8626 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martyndavies1482 Hi Martyn, You make a compelling point here, but with respect to yourself, how many or what percentage of the general population would bother or go to the trouble of notifying their Council Building Control, cost or no cost, that's the real question.Knowing human nature as i do, i would imagine some would and some would not. It's the would nots that raise the concerns here. Again, i raise the points of UTube electrical channels going into in depth procedures of carrying out professional procedures, which promote, encourage or foster the general public's participation into carrying out their own electrical work, and hardware stores and electrical trade outlets that sell electrical products to the general public that enable them to carry out their own electrical works.The bottom line is that when it comes to REAL health and safety matters in life, some things are acceptable to carry out with DIYer's and some things are best left to professionals to deal with. Finding that fine line or common ground between the two is the tricky part for the Governments and the population enlarge. Thanks, Greg.

    I've had qualified electricians leave behind cables taped up, sometimes they just don't bother push the old cables out of the way tape them up and wire in the new ones and call it a day, so getting qualified electricians is by no means a guarantee that you'll have the job done right, just that at least you won't in principle have a fire from bad electrics and if you do you can call insurance.
