- It's FINALLY time to unbox the House of Earth and Blood, and House of Sky and Breath Fairyloot special editions! Sarah J Maas really did take my money when Fairyloot and Illumicrate announced these within days of eachother. In this video I feel very privileged to be able to compare these with the Illumicrate Crescent City set too.

I agree, Illumicrate's version overall seems more adult/higher quality. But I actually prefer the slip cases more!

i went with fairyloot and i'm happy i did! as much as i looove the original cover art (and agree that it's pretty much perfect), i decided not to get the IC because because i didn't feel the need to buy a special edition set that features the same cover art that i already have in the original editions. i also wasn't a huge fan of the black on the sprayed edges on IC. but i love their overlays. almost want to buy just the overlays secondhand and put them into my fairyloot editions!!
The overlays would be a addition if you can find them!
I had a hard time choosing which book to pick as well and in the end I picked Illumicrate because of the cover. I didn't own this book, and I love the original cover art so that is why I ended up buying the Illumicrate editions. Thanks for the comparison - it was a fun battle!
The IC ones would be wonderful for people who didn't have the hardbacks in the first place, they were selling for so much money second hand when they stopped being in production!
I agree I much prefer the Illumicrate editions. The overlay art is a big deal because it’s just more art. I always want more illustrations.

I personally prefer the fairyloot redesigned cover than the original one, and the endpapers as well, but the illumicrate naked hardback wins. I dont like much either sprayed edge tbh... a child of the two would be perfect for me haha

I loved the page overlays that Illumicrate done even though when a different Booktuber showed her set considering I haven’t read the second book yet (there are some of us left lol) she gave massive spoilers for book 2. Although saying that because she got ruined for book 2 she didn’t give a stuff.
Illumicrate came out tops massively in the battle of the books definitely. Illumicrate on the whole their book’s absolutely slap
I 100% prefer the Illumicrate edition and also, if you think about it, even Illumicrate has more character artwork than Fairyloot and I love that art style even more!! IC looks much more adult, elegant and expensive-looking. Fairyloot's redesigned cover looks cheap and I don't like the design at all. And I also prefer the naked hardback in color than just black. Also the edges of FL are awful in my opinion (FL normally has the most intricate and complex digital edges so we know they could have done something much more beautiful) 😅
Exactly what was Fairyloot thinking with those edges! I don't understand, are they supposed to be ombre??

The first edition of the german translation has gorgeous spayed edges without them being special editions. I’m so glad I bought them right when they released!

I personally am very happy I got these! I already won the OG's so I was excited about the redesigned cover. The only thing I liked about the Illumicrate versions were the page overlays I think those turned out so nice! I am personally not a fan of the Illumicrate sprayed edges, I prefer the simplicity and impact of the FL ones. The only FL book set I've gotten damaged so far was the Graceling set (the first book was damaged but they sent me a new one super quick).
I don't mind the slipcases but personally I would have taken just the books for cheaper and ditched the slipcases. They're nice but not need imo. Sorry you are let down by the FL ones BUT I am glad that you liked the Illumicrate ones so much!
I'm so pleased you liked them!! Yes I wish they had an option to ditch the slipcase and have for cheaper, I don't like them where a book has a dust jacket because the edges get damaged, like my HOEAB
I’m SO happy I got both. I will say, it’s nice that we got two COMPLETELY different special editions. There’s not one thing that’s the same, which is great. But I’m also underwhelmed by FL.
IC edges and foiling are perfect for adult crescent city, so well designed. I think they were smart using the original cover with an alternate on the reverse (which I do really love). Maybe some additional foil or something extra on the back above her signature would’ve been nice to make it slightly more special but like you said…it’s perfect. THE OVERLAYS!!! PERFECTION! Like, “I can’t speak” worthy. I think they make the £70 price fair. Also, the IC set arrived in PERFECT CONDITION.
FL just isn’t delivering quality for me. I’m happy we got a redesign but it could’ve been a lot better. I mean the ENDPAPERS WERE SO PERFECT! I wish they’d done dust jackets with that artist instead. The hb foiling was nice, a decent alternative, I liked the quotes. The edges 🙃 Their ink isn’t as opaque as it once was so the detailed designs aren’t working at all. They look patchy and scratched. The slipcase designs look super classy on my shelves so I’m happy with the design. But agree that for £75…they should’ve been higher quality, all of it should’ve been higher quality. £50-60 would’ve been fair for this set. Also, my dust jackets are slightly damaged along the tops due to positioning when being put in the slipcase which is SO ANNOYING when they bubble wrapped them so carefully! 😅 I want perfect books for £70 and the damage probably won’t qualify for a replacement.
Overall, I’m SUPER happy to have them in my shelves. But considering there’s going to be several more books in the series…FL need to step up their quality or drop the price.

It was a tough choice for me too but I ended up going with FL because I already own the original HB’s so IC’s cover wasn’t as appealing but the overlays were definitely enticing. But I thought I’ll just try and get some overlays from elsewhere if I can.
I liked the foiling for FL as again it made it stand out more compared to IC.
IC’s spredges are definitely better compared to FL.
So definitely a hard decision to make, but when you break it down and compare the two, I guess IC’s is probably the better value for money.
I wouldn't say either of them are a 10/10 to be honest
I have pretty much the same thoughts as you! I was so so excited to receive them but I was disappointed. The sprayed edges could have been amazing with the moon design but they just weren't. I have them displayed spine side out and they look really great but overall I was very underwhelmed! Mine were also damaged and missing the bookmark, and then my replacements were also damaged. Between the 2 sets I managed to make a mostly in tact pair 😂
So tired of expensive books coming damaged it's just lazy at this point!

I also have both of these but I will let go Fairyloot's except the slipcases. I will use them in Illumicrate's. 😅 and same feeling, I wish I can rip out the FLs endpapers and put them in IC.
I don't like using slipcases where there's a cover because the tops and bottoms always get scuffed, like my HOEAB book

I honestly kind of wish I got the illumicrate ones. My fairyloot edition came majorly damaged like a hole through 30+ pages ☹️

I LOVE the edges on fairyloot, and dislike the illumicrate ones haha. I'm so glad I got the fairyloot set, I do love the original cover art, and I wish that had been an option for the reverse dust jacket, but I LOVE the redesigned cover and I also love the quote on the backs. I wish fl had the over lays as well, but I dont like the ic set enough to have bought them.
but I do think it was worth the money (was like $200 for me lol). Im so happy with them and love that they are FINALLY here

Love the FL dust jacket, end papers, spine and slipcase but hate the edges. Love the IC hardback, end papers, the reverse dust jacket isn't too bad and the edges look elegant, but the cover seems so simple and the spine is so plain. It's giving commercial hardback. I think I like the FL editions because of the wow factor of the foiling and the slipcase screams special edition to me, and that's it. I haven't read crescent city and have no idea what its about, though so😹...
The set is selling for $400+ now so $75 is a damn steal lol
I feel so sorry for you because on UK vinted there is lots for £150! Still a stupidly crazy price though
You're not the only one who has had a lot of trouble with damaged books with FL. Me too!! Lots of just.. lack of care. Ripped pages, ripped dustjackets, improper binding so the pages aren't actually glued in properly! It's horrific. And I've thought about cancelling my subs more than once.
I didn't get either edition. I was underwhelmed with the Fairyloot design at the time for the price, so I totally agree as far as that goes. And the regular cover is so stunning! That's also why I didn't get the IC one, because almost exact same cover as the regular one. Yeah, no thanks! I'd prefer to pay £12 lol
I don't think I would have got any if I didn't have my channel and I used my ad revenue from the past year as a treat. I feel like both know they could do anything and they would still sell out
I too have had issues with damaged books! I just had to ask for another of the April YA book because it came with a deep slash right across the cover!
I prefer everything about the illumicrate version, and I know you don't like the reversible jacket, but I think it's stunning 😆, if I had bought it I would definitely have reversed it. As it stands I'm glad I didn't buy either 😬

Hi Ness, I paid AU$255 for the FL edition! That is so much money! Like you I couldn’t decide which one to buy, so I bought both IC and FL editions. The two companies offered different things in their editions. Seeing yours, I don’t like the FL sprayed edges compared to the IC. I like the slipcase FL has and the overlays IC has. I also prefer the end pages on FL compared to IC. I also prefer FL dust jacket to IC. I’m not a fan of the reverse jacket IC provided. I hate the art work on the reverse jacket.
I did think you would get both, that's so much money! I would love to see what Owlcrate would do if they got the chance to do this set
When they announced special editions I was not sure witch one should I pick and in the end I chose Illumicrate because I didn’t like the spray edge on the Fairyloot edition. Now watching your video I feel like I chose the right one. I would be very disappointed having the Fairyloot one after seen them side by side

I think illumicrates hardcover combined with the fairyloot spine and slip case would be a good mix

So many of people FL sets have arrived damaged. They have literally put the book in the slip cases damaged. I really dislike the FL edges. I have both sets but prefer my IC ones. And like you I nearly didn’t buy the IC set.
I can't imagine such expensive books being handled in such a lazy way 😭
I didn't get any special editions of Crescent City, but Illumicrate did a very polished job. Their editions are stunning, the naked hardbacks are amazing for sure. Don't enjoy the color scheme on FL's slipcases; the stencilled edges don't look great. And the character art on the hardbacks, they could've done something different. FL seems to be off their game lately, except when it comes to the adult books' customizations. I still think they could have better picks for the adult books, though.
I bought the Fairyloot edition and felt completely underwhelmed and a little disappointed. I thought the cover and edges were missing something. The character art endpapers should have been included as tarot cards and the endpapers should have included landscape with character art (similar to their monthly books ). For the price I just expected more. If Litjoy Crate ever does a special edition of these books, I’ll probably sell these or gift them to a friend.

I did think about doing this! In the fairyloot slipcases
the fairyloot endpaper artwork reminds me of the crescent city tarot card artwork. I love the style, i just wish they also bothered to add more detail into the background. I mean, Only a Monster and the Flower Bride had wonderful stained glass background. Daughter of the moon goddess had a pavilion over a lake of fish! Violet Made of Thorns had Violet looking out over a city.
It's weird for the title of house of sky and breath to be surrounded by animals...not airborne. But i do enjoy the inclusion of the otters. They are like the Olaf for these series. Sorry Syrinx.
I actually prefer Fairyloot's dust jacket and hardcover design over Illumicrate because the original dust jacket was...kind of creepy for me. However Illumicrate wins because they have more artwork than Fairyloot. I would have bought the Illumicrate edition but reversed the dust jacket...if i didn't already own the book.
I actually said when I saw the end papers that they looked like the tarot cards but cut it in editing!

It looks to me like FT envied Babel's slipcase in IC edition, and IC envied intricate edges of FT's Babel and now they swapped ideas xD Or maybe a person responsible for customisations in FT went over to IC? For some time now I feel IC books are so much better in terms of quality and effort that was put into making them unique. FT does not excite me anymore. Even their Adult books - I was anticipating the Foxglove King so much and allthough each part of the customisation sounded cool, in practice my edges came damaged and offcentred and the character art was done in such very dark tones, that I feel like afterwards someone amplified the brightness just so you can make out anything. As a result it looks like a poor quality art that has seen too much sun over the ages and faded away xD
I did think that!! They do seem to use a lot of the same artists so maybe it's the same for production.
My edges on TFK also came off centred, I think everyone's did!
What actually is a page overlay?
It's a page of art slightly see-through that you put into your books, I go through them all in my Illumicrate video, I just didn't in this one because it took ages :)
I only bought the illumicrate ones because they made me gasp when i saw that stenciled edge. I do not regret it for even one second. I don’t like the fairyloot ones at all!!! even the character art isn’t really how i imagined them i’m not going to lie!!!

I think illumicrate edition is so much better. Not a fan of the edges on the Fairyloot ones they look dirty and the cover looks cheap especially compared to illumicrate/original cover 😅

I had the exact opposite experience with book damages!! My Illumicrate had damaged edges, and they refused to replace it.🥲 I have never had a damaged FL book. Great Unboxing! I agree about the price as well.
