    Rich from a 63 year old retired airline aircraft mechanic that's worked on everything over the years, YOU ARE THE BOSS brother. What a great truck, and a a great accomplishment, stuffing that big Cat under the hood.

  • @PorscheRacer14
    @PorscheRacer14 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +48

    This is the truck every guy wanted to dream of and build, but would be illogical, insanely out of reach and too damn complex, big and daunting. And yet, you've made an incredible series documenting the success, the head scratchers, the failures, and the trials to get to this. Even if no one else ever copies this, I hope they see the thought process and determination from this as a blueprint for success. Success in starting, success in keeping going and success in over coming challenges to reach a running project.
    You, your family, friends and crew, have a great 2024!

    Don't feel too bad about the hose, Rich. I was a hose routing guy on several vehicles and we don't actually do much in the way of cycle testing calculations. We take our best guess in CAD, we build prototypes (which almost always get revised), then we shake the whole truck (like... really, really, shake it... for a long, long, time) and see what breaks.
    Prototypes get driven to lunch and on errands all the time exactly to find those sorts of gremlins while they're close to home. You basically did it the same way the "pros" do. We've even fixed our share on the side of the road. 😂

    I was taught on the older rigs that you need to "milk" the power steering to press the air bubbles out while the engine is off. The idea is that fluid flowing has cavitation that prevents bubbles from being bleed out. Lift it again and cycle it back and forth 10 times lock to lock and see if the whine clears up.

I feel the average every-day person has no clue as to what type of engineering and expertise goes into building these things. We just bitch and call it “junk” if anything breaks, lol.

    I feel you on the working out the bugs part. I did a frame swap (2wd-->4wd)/4.8LS/4l80e swap on my squarebody and there isnt much I havent had to do twice. Between 40 year old parts you thought would be ok (they werent), new parts that were bad (bad new caliper which mislead me to believe I had a bad trans as it wouldnt shift out of 1st), wire chaffing from vibration, half a dozen brake line leaks, transfer case slipping out of low (still havent figured that out even after disassembling for a second time.), and installing the front calipers upside down. Im no professional mechanic obviously but the struggle is real.

I have people in my village, all Dodge owners, that any small setback on their vehicle is trip ending and a personal failure which isn’t a happy way of life. Also the brake kleen/ hairspray method has never let me down. Thanks again for bringing us along even though I’m only here for the music.

    "Redhead Steering" builds a damn good gearbox but nothing beats a "Lee power steering" gearbox. At least most NASCAR teams don't think so. Owner Tom Lee built me a gearbox, with hydraulic assist, years ago. It has been on a few trucks I've owned. Tom is now retired but a long time customer took over and runs the business today. I don't mean to be stepping on any potential sponsors foot, just saying there's other options. Hope the new year brings the best for everyone.

  • @randr10
    @randr10 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My Super Duty has the V10, way down on torque compared to your Cat, but it came with the 4.30's, and even with 31" tires on it, it was too much gear for even that engine. I switched to the 3.73 just because it was a factory option and what a world of difference. It pulls so much harder through first gear, mostly because you don't run out of RPM at 15 mph, and even towing I've had that truck to its max tow rating with and without the 4.30's and it has zero problem moving that 10,000 lb trailer either way. You will not regret the gear change at all because I certainly don't. MPG around town is about the same but up on the highway I jumped from 12 mpg to mid 14's mpg if I keep it 65 or under. Huge improvement there. I've even beat 10 mpg towing heavy on country roads (sub 55 speeds). It was pretty consistently 7-8 mpg before. She's no diesel, but that seems to be a sweet spot gear wise for these SRW trucks.

    Well Canton ain't but 40 miles away, but y'all got schedule to keep.
    Just got out of hospital medical coma, but I'm alive that all that matters.
    Kool ride glad y'all gettin her straightened out.
    I got 373 in my f250 towing 11 mpg empty 18.9 mpg, my suggestion is unless you have 6 to 10 transmission dodge runs 350 ratio and they get 25 mpg with 6 speed in 12 and 24 value and pull fine.
    So my 2 cents worth.

      I got a 2006 peterbilt dump truck
      C15 twin turbo.
      But the 7.3 L navistar diésel engine got a very very distinctive sound. In my personal opinion sound much better.

    Flat face hydraulic lines always tend to be the first style that starts to leak I actually like the metric compression style the best

    18:58, my guess is some sort of EV swap. Looks like a narrowed crown Vic front end, maybe a Tesla battery pack, and what looks like Lincoln MK8 irs?

    Nice truck Rich - watch the series, you should share towing mileage - I know you didn`t tow all that many KM`s this trip, but would be great to know for those diesels with the emissions systems and the new big gassers. Love the channel, such great projects

    I would recommend welding a nut to a short bolt and replacing those yellow tailgate clips on the inside. They will break and you lose access. I did mine and won't ever mess with em again

    When I did my power steering system mine was leaking at the pitman arm shaft. Replaced the box, lines & the pump. All new system, & hopefully no more issues for a while.

    Sorry to hear that your filter experiment didn't work out and caused problems, but I think losing the 80 lbs off of the front (and getting that big thing out of the engine bay) is ultimately a win. On my previous RV with a 3126 I ran 40k miles (125kish total) and the injectors never caused me a single issue despite all the hype. I just kept the fuel and the oil clean and changed on or ahead of schedule, and also made sure to keep my temps in line. With everything else you've done I'm sure you won't have problems.
    3.73s should be a good gear ratio with that setup, but I'd even consider 3.55s. For reverence my old RV pulling a car behind it with a 3126 and 3000 would run about 1500 RPM @ 55-60 MPH and was just fine like that.

    Some 2010 and up superduty had 3:31 ratio axle. Would be very good for fuel mileage and when you tow you just keep one gear lower with the tap shifter

    • @phil23515
      @phil23515 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      15 mpg is bad. I used to get 22 mpg with a 6.0 powerstroke 3.55 ratio and 16" tire. My 6.4 was making around 20.5 mpg with 3:73 ratio and 20" tire

    • @verteup
      @verteup 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You were not getting 22mpg with a 6.0. There's two things an honest man will lie about. 1. The women he's been with 2. His gas mileage

    • @phil23515
      @phil23515 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lol. Yes i did make 22 and im not the only one. Thats not a lie. But of course thats when they are healthy and the diff and tire size make a big difference too. You will never get that mileage with a 3:73 or 4:10 diff.
