That unique sound is called a “wolf whistle on a slide guitar”. Here’s the Wikipedia definition: “It involves playing a guitar while holding a hard object (a slide) against the strings, creating the opportunity for glissando effects and deep vibratos that reflect characteristics of the human singing voice. It typically involves playing the guitar in the traditional position (flat against the body) with the use of a slide fitted on one of the guitarist's fingers. The slide may be a metal or glass tube, such as the neck of a bottle”.

@@DaP84 you got er, pontiac! Steve Miller was an early guitar virtuoso, although most of his hits don't shove it in your face. It's almost weird he became more famous as a singer, as his voice is very standard, almost understated, but his guitar playing is top notch, up there with Bloomfield and Clapton. I do love his voice, and that whole 'blue horse' greatest hits. Serenade too.

this was Steve Miller's breakout hit in the early 70's, but it came after he put out 5 or 6 great albums before in the late 60's that were also excellent but not that successful... more psychedelic and underground.... after the Joker became a megahit, he had a string of great hits.... but try something from his earlier days... a song called Baby's House from the album Your Saving Grace (his fourth album) is fantastic, and also Space Cowboy from the album Brave New World, which he references at the start of this song ... I recommend the studio versions of these songs
