GW going to 2.0 on the Contrast range, Army Painter hiring a full Hit Squad of painters to push Speedpaints to 90 colors and revamp the range, and Vallejo the GOAT coming out with these Xpress colors (VERY excited about that matte finish), this is such a great time to be in this hobby in my opinion, we're living in a new golden age of paint innovation and variety and I think we're going to look back at the early 2020's as one of the greatest times to get started in the miniature painting hobby
oh 100%, specifically these new types of semi translucent paints have absolutely changed the game. I picked up the CYMK variants of the GW contrasts just to test some colour theory stuff out and see what happens. I keep finding myself do something with them, that ANYONE who can hold a brush could do and just 'yeah, ok then, here we go'
It's incredible lmao what a time to be alive
100% this is THE GOLDEN AGE of our hobby
Green Stuff World's dipping inks are cool also
But where can I purchase them??
You need to ask your local shops or online retailers on when they will be launching them
"they will dry matte as f*ck" 🤣🤣🤣 I know everyone would have liked more colours, but personally the set they have come up with covers all the basics. And too many options means I take longer to make up my mind! Can't wait for the release!
Sometimes you need to get technical
Vallejo never fails to make me happy. They are my #1 Favorite paints. These colors are great. So far the most exciting of the quick style paints.
Thanks
As a returnee to the hobby after many many years I am blown away by how the whole range of paints has changed and all the brands that I'd never heard of before when I was a kid! I have mixed feelings about speed/contrast paints as I'm still relearning to paint with normal ones 😂 but I do like the idea of a sort of cheat code these products provide! I'm gonna have to pick some up to try out and I suspect I'll be converted quite quickly 😂
I got to try them out at a convention in Taiwan a week ago. I’m new to miniature painting and have never used Citadel contrast before, so it’s my first experience with these types of paints. Gotta say I really enjoyed it, seeing the recesses get shaded automatically was really cool. Definitely picking a few bottles up once they hit the shelves.
Glad you liked them!
I will absolutely be buying this entire line when it drops. No doubt. This is what I have been wanting, a true artist level version of contrast paints made by a real paint company that knows what they are doing and cares about their quality.
Thanks, glad you liked them
Same thoughts, same plan to buy. Very exciting.
My thoughts exactly! As soon as I saw how matte they were and the increased drying time, I was sold hahaha!
YEAH
I wouldn't call it "true artist" level, they are missing pigment info
I wanted to say. Thank you, Juan. I watch all of your videos and you do a amazing job. I appreciate that you take the time to share your experiences and thoughts with us. I wish you and your family good fortune. I look forward to all your future videos.
Thanks ☺️
Great review. I'm very happy that you've been involved in the making of these paints. It gives me a lot of confidence in the quality of this product.
Gracias
instantly a huge relief that the splitting dropper tops is getting addressed by a company, it's been something I've increasingly experienced as I moved away from citadel pots to dropper bottles and it can be just as frustrating as all the known issues with paint pots. And damn, that Velvet Red looks delectable. All of these look great actually, very tempting new paints. Seem to do a good job shading the recesses as well. My wallet is weeping already...
Yeah, the tips splitting is very annoying
Interesting I have 150 odd Vallejos and about 50 of mixed all others and only 1 Gun Metal AP dropper split . But Ive knocked over 6 citadel pots and thrown out 5 that dried out
Vallejo, the ones who stick to their ranges and don't change crap after a couple of years?
Sign me up.
Yeah, great advantage
Generally speaking this is still true and part of why they are my favorite manufacturer of paints for minis, but I was shocked to see that their revamped lineup with new bottles and new logos included not only several new additions, but also some removals.
Plus: 23 Xpress Colors, Xpress Medium, Ultra Matt Varnish, 18 regular Game Colors, 6 Fluo Colors (and moving existing 2 to this new sub-line), 2 Washes, 3 Inks, 12 Special FX Colors
Minus: 18 regular Game Colors, 6 Extra Opaque Colors (and moving remaining 2 to the main line), 2 Washes, 1 Ink, 7 Special Effect Colors (most replaced by above), Crackle Medium
I'm curious/worried now what will happen with other paint lines of theirs.
I actually know the answer to that but I cannot talk about it sorry
Lol. Thinking of getting back into mini painting and realising most of my old colours are defunct. No good if I run out in the middle of something. It's one big reason why I'll stock up on xpress rather than contrast.
Thanks 😘
It's great seeing the full range like this. I have only used a couple of these colors so far and love them. Can't wait for the full release to get the rest of them.
Awesome! Glad you liked them
Thank you for your great overview. I will be adding these to my toolset of paints which also includes contrast. I really like how you keep all your reviews positive and any criticism you provide is more like constructive feedback. Your videos are a calming bright light.
Thanks, I refuse to be negative, makes the community worse as a whole
Sort of shocked that it's only 23 colors :O I love to hear that their behavior is similar across the range, and I'm sure they'll expand. Can't wait to get a set of these. THRILLED that they have matte finish too!
Yeah, I'm extremely happy with what we came up with
23 is the same number as the Army Painter SpeedPaints.
@@rayslover8526 Army painter just announced they are substantially enlarging the line and have improved the formula
@@steveisaak4320 I haven't seen that yet. But I did see that AP has posted some new stuff on TH-cam recently, and has an "advisory committee" or something of TH-cam painters or something. I'll look into it tomorrow.
@@steveisaak4320 but I love the speed paints, I have a bunch of the Contrast paints, have the War Colours "anthesis" paints, so I'll definately pick up these Vallejo paints as well.
These look great! I usually use inks over a grisaille and it's time consuming, as I almost always have to mix colors and add matte varnish (of varnish afterwards). I don't use contrast because inks are cheaper and more versatile for my paint style, but at this price I might get some key useful colors from this range.
AWESOME
That intro!! You sir, are a genius in disguise! Thanks Maestro Hidalgo. I already have the whole xpress range as soon as they came out and I’m really happy about them. No reactivating and constant properties around the range. Also new, friendly recycled dropper bottles, where you can see all colours perfectly!
Also really good saturation and control because of their transparency. I love it!
Thanks mate 😘
The fact that this drops the day after a GW collab about contrast paints is just perfect. Some gaps in my contrast 'library' will now have to wait until these get to Canada to fill (Cardinal Purple, Deep Purple, Mystic Blue - and replacing Apothecary White)
NICE!

That's an engineer right there
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures That's a dangerous hobby formula that!
Very excited to try these!
Thanks for everything you do making this hobby that much better 😊❤👍🏻
Thanks, that really means a lot
Thanks for the amazing breakdown and demos Juan, lots of support from Barcelona!
Animo eta jarraitu lan onarekin!!!💪
Eskerrik asko!
Troll Green and Space Grey colours seem a bit off. Maybe they just seem more opaque.
Otherwise, they seem great. I agree about the colour limitations you mentioned. It would also be nice to have more flesh tones for various skin types.
I really like the new bottles and tops, a needed improvement on an old design.
Overall, I think it's a great start, and the best contrast range we've seen yet.
Yeah Space Grey by necessity has to be opaque, troll green although a nice had filler is not what I would have done myself
I've just been getting ready to expand my paint collection, and this looks pretty amazing! I wonder when they release...
Between November and January depending where you live
Yeah, like Juan says, something like November in Europe, December for North America, January for Asia/Oceania
I think that is accurate. You need to ask at your local shop because Vallejo only sells through distributors so every place can be different
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Or ask your European based shop to find out when you can get them early...
Exactly
I keep watching this video because i cant wait until these are available in the states! Im happy to hear The V is already developing more colors. Bring on the cream and bone and dark geeen. That Velvet Red tho! Dwarf skin looks to be the best 'contrast' skin yet. Cant wait thanks Juan!
VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD
They look super clean and very very nice to manipulate once they're applied to the miniature, i will definitely buy them when they're released
Awesome
Great, now you can make another 20 Space Marine Painting videos with the new Colour 😀
Maybe, at least one or two
Awesome video - great to see all the colors on something. Agree that there are too few colors. The ones they have look great (especially the yellows, reds, and purples), but it would have been amazing to have 30 colors. I can't wait for the set to go up for sale.
If the range had the following 8 paints I think it would have been a perfect launch:
Light Neutral Gray
Dark Neutral Gray
Darker Black - Like AP Black or Black Legion
Pure/True Green - Slightly darker than Troll Green
Pure/True Blue - Less purple than Omega Blue
Neutral Brown - a brown that doesn't shift yellow or red
Dark Brown - a brown with more blue
Bone
I completely agree
Thank you for review!
I wanted vallejo equivalent of gw contrasts since they first dropped, and now it's finally happening.
It is indeed
I've never been a contrast fan but I am a fan of vallejo and have been looking at getting more of my models painted and on the table quicker I will be buying this whole range on release 100% great review.
Awesome
The colors look great except for Lotus Black. I looked at the high res photo linked, and it reads more blue than black. Black Legion (Citadel) and Grim Black (The Army Painter) by comparison actually read as black. I'm excited to try these out. Not sure how much I like the long dry time. Vallejo makes incredible products, so I'm pretty confident this will likely be my go to (with a couple color exceptions).
Long drying time means less stains and ugly pooling, it's a good thing
Velvet Red just might be one of my favorite paint colors of all time. Absolutely gorgeous.
Yeah, it's amazing
The swatches are very much appreciated, thanks Juan!
Happy to help
Excellent review! Can’t wait for its release….l
I just received mine last night, I will be trying them tomorrow.
Thanks
They look promising. I prefere Vallejo over GW and I am happy to buy the full pack as addition to my pallett. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching it
Heavily considering Templar white for my Clone Troopers. Apothecary white just doesnt cut it for me, but this looks promising!
You won't regret it
I thought the same thing! I just need to know where I can order this paint line. Can't find them anywhere online as of 10/29/2022
@@saltykrug It's like it's all a big secret as to when these are going to available for paying punters to buy , nothing that I can find online from the actual manufacturers at all
All they told me is between November and January, but it's already December and nothing.
Sadly I can't tell you anything else, because I don't know it. The main issue is Vallejo doesn't sell directly to customers, they sell through distributors and that complicates things
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Element Games and Wayland Games are now stating 30/12/22 as a release date for the UK .
I see several colours I'll be getting for my hobby rack. Thanks for the video, another hobby channel subbed thanks to them reviewing paints. More channels need to do this.

Yeeeeesss... I have been waiting for this! I will buy most of these to try out contrast type colours. The matt finish and long drying time seems like a great advantage. Not to mention that they are not in fricking pot designed to fall over.
Glad you liked them
The only color that I had an immediate, "meh" reaction to was the black. Any chance of a video in the near future showing how you use it to good effect? All the other colors looked good, with most of them looking like they could be slotted in my current favorite color schemes.
Several layers, watch my first impressions video
Templar white is very impressive. Imperial yellow looks like it is just as yellow as the new contrast paints, but it has a solid contrast effect. Same with Martian Orange. I also like their matte finish in general.
The smaller range is a gripe, as I'm not sure what I would replace from the contrast paints I already have.
Also. PLEASE. Vajjelo, Army Painter, Citadel, ANYONE! MAKE A SEA-GREEN CONTRAST PAINT!
You mean a dark sea green? Because Snake Green is very sea greeny
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Snake Green is on that color-spectrum indeed, same with Aeldari Emerald from Citadel. But yeah, I'd like something darker.
To be specific I want something that looks like Incubi Darkness in the recesses and Kabalite Green or Lupercal Green on the flats.
Yeah you want a darker version, probably very difficult to do due to how the pigment is
I think I’m in love with the space wolfs color! Definitely will be picking this up! Thank you
Happy to help
I'm excited to try them! I started painting this March and went heavy with Speedpaints specifically. I've enjoyed them a lot and I avoided Contrast primarily because I had no desire to use the pots. I recently bought into the model color line of Vallejo to build up my standard layering techniques - so excited to also mix in their new version to complement or perhaps even lean on for the single layer painting transparent painting (which i intend to still rely on for the bulk of my work).
Awesome
First, THANK you for the colour chart! While I always do paint the caps, a separate chart is just such an QOL upgrade!
The colours being matt (or gloss) is important to many people. Not so much for myself since I always varnish the finished model anyway.
Have to say, all the colours look great and so happy to hear that they all behave alike! The only one that seems a little "weak", would be the black. Looking at the photos, it feel a bit blue(?) to me. Will still buy it though. :D
From the selection, the only 2 colours I spot that I'd miss is goblin green. Guess troll green and some yellow mixed will have to do until there's a pre'mixed one to my taste. (: And a lighter skin tone. Don't get me wrong. The dwarf skin seems AMAZING! Just a tad too red for my taste.
Selection. Yeah, there are a few colours that I'd love to have that aren't there yet. Luckily enough there are competitors that have them. Or yeah, I guess I could always use normal paints...
That said, releasing 24 colours to begin with, is the for me, the right thing to do. If Vallejo had dropped 50+ colours at once I think quite a few people would've been scared. Releasing 20-30 every 3 months, seems/feels like a more manageable schedule.
Finally and probably something I should ask Vallejo. Any clue if the Xpress colours will come in a set or do I have to buy them 1 by 1?
Thanks for the great work!
No idea of sets sorry.
Apart from that I totally agree with you
One thing I don't like here is that I'll have to paint the caps white for these...
😂
@@ArynCrinn True :'(
I usually do some every time I prime with the airbrush. (-:
@@Himle_ Probably better to do that.
Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room straight up with these. I've been leery and very skeptical of all painting "reviewers" now since the majority of them somehow managed to miss one of the most incredibly obvious flaws in speed paint while breathlessly praising it. The fact this looks so consistent and doesn't reactivate means it's unlikely to replace my contrast paints, but it's certainly going to remove my Speed Paints.
Thanks, omissions like that make the narrative better for the views and thus the money.
None of that BS here
These Express Colors look really nice. I need to get a few of them for sure, but honestly, I really want the whole range. Velvet red, deep purple, lizard green, caribbean turquoise, plague green and dwarf skin are the ones I really like. Thanks for showing us how they look. Great video.
Thanks ☺️
Absolutely love that violet and yellow-green. Perfect for doing old school Plague Marines before "weathering" with an unvarished oil wash
Nice idea
2:15 completely transparent bottles are great! The ones I use to decant into are and love the way they are better at showing of the paint inside.
Yeah it's a great improvement
Finally! Mat Washes/Contrast paints with good pigmentation! Perfect. Thanks for the review - I was on a fence but now gonna jump straight in.
YEAH!
I'm very proud of the final product
Those look great in every way (bar the amount of colors)! Thanks for spreading the info!
Happy to help
Your videos are always helpful, thanks.
Thanks ☺️
AMAZING, cannot wait to get my hands on all of these colors.
Awesome
These look fabulous! Also Juan, YOU'RE fabulous! Thanks buddy.
Thanks 😘
These look fabulous, consistent finish and handling and matt finish are all improvements over contrast. If you can thin with water thats amazing
Yes you can, I point that out in the video
Looks good! Very good to hear it doesn't dry as fast a Citadel contrast, because that was my main issue.
Yeah, that wasn't intentional just a consequence of the properties we wanted to achieve
Looking forward to these, I love the way they cover
Thanks
You are spot on, with the ranges CONS, this was exactly what I wanted to comment under the video - Bone, Grey an a Saturated Green - this where the 3 colors I would like to have now. Still I'm very impressed with how uniform the colors and theapplication of them looks on the video. Already sold AP Speedpaints so now I'm just waiting for the premiere in my area.
Also - holy smokes Vallejo applying burns to AP by making their range even cheaper than AP - nuts!
Yeah that was a good trolling

4:28 the velvet red looks nice for handle grips and robes and such. Nice colors all around. Thanks for the video!

I like contrast but I'm going to try these. They look very good and I think they will give an excellent result. The range of colors at the moment is not wide but it is very successful.
Great video as always and super successful & funny intro ;-)
Thanks 😘
Una review extraordinaria y sincera. Llevas mucha razón, me faltan colores tan necesarios como un rojo más saturado o el color hueso. Supongo que vallejo los acabará sacando. Gracias.
Ya estamos trabajando en 20 más
I have the entire Vallejo air range and it has yet to disappoint even once, will be watching this project with much interest.
Thanks
Cannot wait to order them! I'm pretty hyped.
YEAH
I'm loving that turquoise. I love teal colors especially if you do a brown with it
Teals are always amazing
Beautiful video and beautiful products! I don't love how they dry, but then again, I'm not a contrast colours expert. Everything else, tho (especially the price)? *chef kiss. Even the colour range isn't a issue for me, since it covers the basic ones (or, at least, the one I'm interested in).
Thank you for making this video, can't wait to see your next paint jobs with this line.
Thanks
Huge fan of these. Picked up the full range and am slowly going through them all.
Awesome
Looking forward to these sooo much!
Nice
They look great! Those yellows are incredible! The orange and bright blue colours in particular are looking like super easy ways to do plasma coils on Space Marines.
The matte finish is very nice to have too. Citadel Contrast has a bit of a sheen to it, kind of a satin finish that isn't always what you want. The colour range is a tad limited for the moment, but the foundation is here and it can grow into an awesome range.
Curious as to how they behave over metallic colours. The red and turquoise tones in particular are holding my interest here because I love me some Heresy style Thousand Sons and Alpha Legion. Also curious what they do through an airbrush. Contrasts can do some interesting things there.
The matte finish is not a good combination with metallics sadly, it's a tradeoff you have to make
Good video my frend! I excited to get some these paints, for approx 1/2-1/3 the cost of citadel contrast they should be very well worth getting at least a few of them 👌🥰🐶
Indeed!
I'm definitely interested in some of these. The violets, as most of my Nighthaunts are purple, and the reds/browns, as the other things I paint are Roman historic figures.
Nice
I'm so excited about this paint line! Been slapping with GW and its been like a 7.5 out of 10... the Vallejo stuff seems way good.
They are amazing and 34 more colours coming very soon
Y'know, originally I was gonna come here and be an asshat, because I completely believed those spikey-bits articles about you... But as it turns out, you're a bloody stand-up guy. If you think something needs to known, you make it known. If you've got a problem with something, you bring it up. And if you think someone's an asshole, you call em' an asshole. That's something I can respect, and your painting skills alone prove that the respect in question is well earned. Godspeed, and keep on pushing forward. I know I'll be watching avidly from now on.

great video and overview, thanks for that.
also: nicely done on sneaking 'the doors' in there. ;)
The credit there is not mine, that's all on Vallejo
Thank you for the review! Orc skin is my favourite there!
Awesome
I would LOVE to grab a set of these, the matte drying is great, but the fact they're slower drying makes them infinitely more versatile.
Exactly!
Happy to see they've added seals to their dropper bottles. I like Vallejo's paint, but every time I've mail ordered their paints, at least one cap came loose in shipping and leaked all over the set.
Yeah, it's a great improvement
Wow, I was looking just for the name of Vallejo contrast paints and now I know every color. Thank you, just decided to paint my brecher killteam different ;)
Awesome!
This video was amazing. I’m very interested in these paints!
Thanks
Thank you. I like that white contrast a lot. I think I'll buy that. The others, not so much. Not really required when I already have too much paint.
That is fair! The white is outstanding
Ooooh I like this. I've been using Contrast paints more and more lately
Awesome
So cool! I can't wait to buy these.
Awesome
Glad my partner is going back to Spain to visit family, as usual with a Vallejo shopping list!
NICE
Just love those color coded seals and clear bottles
They are super nice
Definitely going to add them to my Army Painter speed paint collection to supplement them. Pink and purple are lacking in Army Painter Speed paints and I love the reds, blues, and oranges. Wish the black was 'black', but that's OK.
Yeah, as I said it was a choice, not one I would have made but a choice for sure
Excellent, thanks for the pictures
Happy to help
Great video as always, I think I'll be picking up a few and gradually changing over when my citidel stock runs out. That does depend on cost and availability, I just moved to Canada so I'm not sure how easy it is to get Vallejo paint here, especially when it was hard to get where I was in the UK before. Still, looking forward to trying some in the future and perhaps a larger range of colours to come.
Awesome
Would love to see detailed tutorials like your eavy contrast series for these. As well as the speed paint range for that matter!
Maybe in the future
Already got 8 of them at Essen Spiel a couple of weeks ago, they are great!
NICE! that's awesome, glad you liked them
These look great can't wait to try these over a zenithal prime, love the matt finish!

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures am I right in thinking these look like they are less prone to pooling compared to GW and Speed paints?
Maybe a tiny bit but it's hard to judge when you don't get any either way

Thanks heather ☺️
You're just one of Juan's crazy cultists 😅😅
IT'S TRUE
@@markbaker9323 oh noes, my secret is out!
Great video...I will definitely give these a go when they are available.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures you had me at ‘they won’t reactivate’ I have Contrast and GSW Dipping inks which I use all of the time… I do have AP Speedpaints… but since I got them on pre order they have pretty much sat on the shelf.
Love the working time on these, which imho puts it way above the rest. Being able to move the paint around a few mins after application without causing artifacts puts it more in oil territory, which is just MWAH!
Yeah the longer working time is my favourite property too
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I'm using it more readily on large surfaces like vehicles now, and the difference in the result is night and day, because I can take care of those pools without damaging the end result!
Cannot wait for these!
So excited to have people use them
I have been making model an figurines for quite some years and used a lot of different brands of paint. Over the years i found the paints i like. Even with its problems i liked army painter speedpaint and love using it primarily for figurines. For vehicles i tend to use different paints. Vallejo is one of the brands i mainly use so when i found out that they were working on there version of contrast paint i got curious and want to try them. Today i started to use them and yes it works and you don't have problems you would have with speed paint a specially with pre shading. A technique i love to use. I agree with Juan that the assortment is small but its a start. A other small negative for me is that there doesn't seem to be a starters set with some of the basic colours but the price and quality of this paint is excellent. I will keep using this paint for my projects and hoop that vallejo brings out more soon.
Thanks for the feedback! We are working on A LOT more Colors, so expect those coming at some point
I will most definitely be buying these and the new game color range as well. Vallejo is a brand that never disappoints. BTW, love the reference you used “Disturbance in the force” LMAO.
