- The so called Imortal Machado de Assis, the most important brazilian writer of all times, was born in 1839 in a house situated on a slope in "Morro do Livramento" (Livramento Hill), central region of Rio de Janeiro. At that time, the place was not so degraded. It was common to live on the hills, as in "Morro do Castelo" as well.
When he wrote the book "The Hand and the Glove", the writer lived in a house in Rua da Lapa (Lapa St), neighborhood of the same name, near Largo da Lapa (Lapa Square). It was a good middle-class address. Later on, in 1883, he moved to a high part of Rio de Janeiro, neighborhood of Cosme Velho. It was place with a pleasant climate and also less populated at that time. The house was located near the place where the train station that connects to the top of Corcovado was built. Machado de Assis and his wife, there resided until the death of the writer in 1908.
In 1897 Machado de Assis with others brazilian writers founded the Brazilian Academy of Literature, which did not have its own headquarters until the year 1923. Machado de Assis was president of the Academy for many years, and this institution is also called Machado de Assis House.
