row generated tune. i mostly used tone rows in 2017 to write the 100 or more songs i fashioned that year. when i'm in a writing period, i'll do at least 1 a day, and sometimes 3. in all i've composed over 700 since i began in 1978, then under the guidance and insistence of my great teacher of music theory Robert Pleasant. i took one year of jazz lessons, which laid the foundation of everything i've been able to acquire musically since. there was never any theoretical talk during the seven previous years of classical piano lessons,
just reading and wrote memorization, much like our public education system.
it was Bobby who showed me what was generating the musical thoughts of all the European masters to whom i had been exposed, and it is to him that i owe the greatest debt, as a composer. he insisted i start writing my own stuff - gently at first, just writing blank chord progressions. then one day he said
'put a melody to this progression' that i had wrote, ostensibly one that i
thought had some kind of merit. many of those tunes survive to this day,
albeit in updated form, and are some of the more natural and songlike things
i've done. thank you Bobby.
