    Prata shops are a lifeline while working shift hours during NS. If not for them, it'll be fast food for supper every night. To look forward to a pack of takeout warm local food during those long nights is a morale booster.

    One of the main reason is because migrant workers were the ones who opened prata shops. And they want to cater to workers who work at night. Most office building and malls only allow renovation or works to be done at after office hours. 7pm-7am or 10pm-7am.

    He suggested another reason for the exit of these hawkers is that many former coffee shop vendors overbid on their rental prices and were unable to sustain their stalls in the long run.
    Some former coffee shop vendors were encouraged to bid high rental prices because of the heavy subsidies for rent and services handed out by the government during the pandemic.
    “Some of the stalls listed moved here from coffee shops.

    Get rid of the bidding process la, ” said Makansutra founder Kf Seetoh, in response to the recent news report on vacant stalls in the bustling Amoy Street Food Centre.
    Mr Seetoh criticised the practice of bidding for hawkers to secure a stall in the hawker centre, arguing that the government should do away with it and offer fair rentals and give it to the most deserving hawkers. My opinion exactly get rid of the bidding system

    • @marcuslim8138
      @marcuslim8138 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, but Seetoh is very much an armchair critic.
      What makes one hawker more deserving than the other? If they are able to work more hours?
      Didn't he also complain about hawkers being asked to have guaranteed opening hours in their contracts.
      So bidding cannot, guaranteed opening hours also cannot, but he continues to complain about vacant shops. Seetoh wants to have his cake and eat it.

    • @matthewchiayongxuan2251
      @matthewchiayongxuan2251 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What then, determines "most deserving" in your opinion? It is subjective

    • @marcuslim8138
      @marcuslim8138 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewchiayongxuan2251 I didn't make that claim, merely to point out that Seetoh's claims are simplifying what is a complicated issue. You go to many hawker centers, and the stalls that are closed are under long-term, subsidised rent. The rent is low enough that the stall operators can run the stalls for a few days and make enough money to close for the rest of the week. So it is clear that having low rent does not solve the issue of vacant stalls, in fact, it can exacerbate the situation.

    Many of these young hawkers closed their stalls after a few months, due to a high starting rent and being unable to generate enough income to make ends meet.
    Amoy Street Food Centre is one of the favourite dining spots nearby the Central Business District and is managed by National Environment Agency (NEA).
    According to NEA, the stall occupancy rate of the food centre was about 90% last month, out of a total of 135 stalls.
    Hawkers have to submit monthly rental bids during NEA’s monthly tender exercises to secure a stall there, Stalls are awarded to the highest bidder.
