    Just FYI, the transmission that the subtitles didn't catch much should be a helicopter inbound from Sha Lo Wan - it is most likely a helicopter of Government Flying Service (similar to Coast Guard) doing a VFR flight. The names spoken are both real places and also points of reference and reporting points for helicopter VFR traffic.

They only need to close the runway when the car arrives to lead CES506 onto 07R then J3, after CES506 has vacated the runway they can resume normal operations as CES506 will be using taxiway J.

      @leeyc0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@VASAviation Since the Government Flying Service helicopter is using CASEVAC callsign, it is probably flying for an air ambulance service, which is common in Hong Kong. There are a lot of outlying islands in Hong Kong without road connection, or too far for road transport to the hospital. In this case the emergency service would request a helicopter (or in some cases, marine police launch) to transport the patient to the hospital.

      They don't have much of a choice. Lantou Island is directly to the south with mountain ranges as tall as 1000m, with more on the mainland not far away from the airfield. And let's not forget Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to the west as well. The three runways would be used in mixed configuration instead of independent, so it's very similar to what they do now.

    First, i must give the ATC credit for their patience. But, why screw around with a NORDO aircraft for such a long a time? Why did they not use the light gun signals and have China aircraft taxi back to their starting point? Then, send out a Follow ME vehicle,, and make visual contact with the crew to follow them off the runway! Why did they not attempt contact via other means? The VOR (most of them have a voice feature); it would override the VOR ID, they could then hear an instruction to vacate the runway and return to the ramp. A mishandled situation!

    • @kewkabe
      @kewkabe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Because light gun signals are not for taxi instructions, pilots don't monitor VOR voice frequencies (almost all modern aircraft are RNAV anyway), and follow me trucks can take 20 minutes or more to get if they're not usually used. (I'm a controller).

    • @SenorCrazylegs
      @SenorCrazylegs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Light signals would be such a balls up. The tower is 1.5 miles away, and sure as hell those guys wouldn't be looking at it. And what about other aircraft? All of them were having difficulty on that frequency. What if they misinterpreted light signals as being for them?
      kewkabe is right, a follow me would take ages, and how would it get down there? That part of the problem. It's super congested on J and H for departures from J1 and J2 in HKG. There isn't normally even space to vacate from J3. The follow me would have to come down the runway, blocking departures for a long time - and that's notwithstanding approaches by cargo aircraft to 07R and the time it would take to organise a car to get down there.
      And I can confirm, nobody listens to VOR voice.
      Now you do normally have 1. a mobile phone, and 2. a satcom. Both of those would be clear of interference and worth a go. Satcom normally has contact details for very specific locations such as control towers. Those options would have to be pilot prompted and difficult to pull off when you're near a runway with only two crew. I can't see what else anyone could have done, apart from try to get them on a different frequency earlier.

    • @kewkabe
      @kewkabe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I'm in the USA and light guns simply aren't used anymore, especially with airliners. Hong Kong is modern and busy enough so it's probably the same. Flashing a blinking white light at them would have zero effect on anything.

    • @rubenvillanueva2753
      @rubenvillanueva2753 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kewkabe nice to hear from a fellow colleague. A flashing White light, from a light gun signal, to an aircraft on the ground, means return to starting point on the airport, ie, back to the gate. It is used, as all the other light gun signals, controllers as well as pilots should know them. Twenty minutes for a vehicle to drive down a runway? In what airport was this?

    • @rubenvillanueva2753
      @rubenvillanueva2753 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kewkabe yes, pilots do not monitor VOR frequencies, but when you have a NORDO situation you try all possible means of communications, pilots know this. Do pilots monitor 121.5 VHF?, No, but when they lose communication, they go to it. Also, a pilot may choose to utilize RNAV, but VOR are still utilized for navigation, are they not? I was a SATCO, in both RADAR APPROACH CONTROL AND CONTROL TOWER Facilities, though now now retired. I have seen similar situations that were handled swiftly.

    Is there anything a captain could do if they realise they're not receiving the instructions from the tower over the radio - it's all very well saying they should have realised but you don't exactly want an aircraft taxiing down the runway back to the apron on their own initiative. Surely the only thing they could do was try to fix the radios, wait for a marshalling vehicle to come out to them (or I suppose try and phone the tower if that's possible)

    What is the meaning of blocking frequency?

    • @tylerg.9418
      @tylerg.9418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the easiest way I can explain is this: on a phone there is more than one "channel" which means that if you and your friend are talking on the phone you can interrupt each other. On the radio though you only have one channel which means that only one person can talk at a time. You literally cannot hear if someone is talking when you are talking. That is why pilots (and us) will hear that loud noise and they will say "blocked" when something like this happens to let all the people involved know that no one could hear them.

    • @compphysgeek

      they had no other way to go .. they had to enter the runway to clear the blockage for the other planes. It was just unfortunate that the controller just had them enter the runway at first and not taxi down the runway immediately.

      Hello Guys sometimes we have a stuck mike, the push to talk button, gets stuck in the transmit position. This usually blocks everyone out, you can only hear the pilot speaking, and he does not know that he is causing the problem. Many, funny and embarrassing things have ben said over an open stuck mike! You also hear a loud squelching sound, those are the other pilots or ATC trying to call.

    • @madvlad1
      @madvlad1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Radio communications for aircraft use VHF and to use it you broadcast to everybody on that frequency as it's a shared medium. Only 1 station can transmit at any one time because of the way the signal is transmitted. If 2 stations transmit at the same time, you tend to get a lot of interference as the receiver struggles to decode the signal as the 2 transmissions overlap each other. What can happen occasionally is that the Push To Talk button on the control column or the sidestick may break or get stuck and you can end up inadvertently transmitting after you release the button. Because only one station can transmit at any one time, this prevents the frequency being used for others to use it as the transmission may not be received clearly by the intended recipient due to the interference. And because you cannot transmit and receive at the same time, the pilots may not have heard that there was any interference - they may have simply heard the Tower South frequency go unusually quiet given how busy the runway was, which would have tipped them off that something was wrong with their radio.

    • @kaioker
      @kaioker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      all the planes are broadcasting and receiving on the same frequency so if 2 broadcast at once it overwrites the signal with the strongest one. yes you have to push a button, but if the button got damaged or other damage is elsewhere, or even just a spider on the circuit board, it could broadcast silence overwriting all other signals or at least distorting them.

    • @rubenvillanueva2753
      @rubenvillanueva2753 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fabian Neundorf No, ATC uses VHF or UHF frequencies. AM is used by radio stations, slowly being phased out by FM. Next time you fly, ask your instructor, if the aircraft has an NDB! Ask for him to tune the a local AM radio station. You can listen to the music and baseball games while flying. Also, if you get lost, you can home in, on the radio station frequency, and fly towards the station, hopefully , there is an airport or field you can land at.
