Your spot on with this one, I currently fish out of a '96 Stratos 278 dual console with a johnson 150, I love it, and have always love stratos, the biggest issue is the wiring, everytime I add something electrical wise it's a nightmare, I hate to even pull the panels off the dash.
Yup, I agree 100%. I gave up, and took it to my mechanic, and I’m having him pull the entire dash, and replacing the faded dash, and putting in new gauges. So, it’s not only good for another 20yrs (hopefully), but it’s serviceable if I do wind up needing to fix something. You can’t get the replacement switches, or LEDS either. But, short of that, I absolutely love mine. We got a great deal on it, and short of the dash, and disconnecting the oil-injection on the Evinrude 150, we haven’t had to do anything to it at all. Best boat I’ve ever owned….that’s for sure.

Still running a 93 201 Pro XL myself. Absolutely love it. Modernized it with a 225 opti, ghost, and poles. You’re absolutely right about the wiring. Lol.
My dad had a 95, and 07 285 pro xl. 95 had a white Johnson on it. Was a great boat. He still has his 07. Carpet is still immaculate. He has taken great care of it, but point is if you take care of them...15 years later it's still a great boat.
My first boat was a 04 Stratos Pro XL. Once I repowered it from a 175 Johnson to a 175 Evinrude she ran perfect. Great handling boat!
I’m still running my 94 201 pro xl. You were bang on with everything you said. The wiring pisses me off too. But still getting me on fish. I love and will have it till the end.
Love my Stratos I run a 2009 294 pro xl with a 200 HO etec she will fly have no issues with the boat still catches the eye beautiful boat
I am still rocking my ‘97 Stratos 295 Pro Elite, mid-60s with team derby load with the Evinrude Vidicator 200 and a great ride. Over the 22 years I have had it , most of the wiring has been replaced as needed as electronics got upgraded. I have been looking to replace it for 5 years and haven’t been in a boat that made me say it was worth it. The BassCat P2 may change my mind.
I love my 2002 19XL pro star. Excellent boat to fish out of and I have never had any real problems with it. I have taken out all of the original fish finders and made some custom panels to mount new graphs.
Running a 95 stratos. I love my 2 stroke evinrude. Don’t have to worry about many things
I have a 2014 201 Pro XL Stratus and I love that boat it's my second one and it's a shame they did disappear and you're absolutely correct on your good bad and ugly about it.
Just stumbled on this video,I had both models you mentioned,my 285 pro was a great deal,the guy didn't keep up with his oiler and burned a piston on the evinrude,I got a little crazy and just started taking it apart,from trolling motor,deck,the control panel was taken out,all that wire was gone,put together a new loom,I put a 200 merc efi,I used the loom from that boat,so much better,6" jack plate,sea star,turned out amazing,everyone with a stratos asked a million questions,it would cruise at 63 allday,plus I put a dual axle under it.

I have a 2007 Stratos 486 SF. it has a Yamaha 150 2 Stroke. Mine is a dark red, dark blue, and white. The color scheme is beautiful. The boat handles very well. I think that everything that you said is spot on. I hate the wiring behind the console. There is no fuse box. Just in line fuses and zip ties everywhere. I had to add my own fuse box to hook up some lights for the live well and the compartments. I may decide to rewire everything under the console, this fall, and run it all through a fuse box and bus bars.
thank you for your knowledge on stratos boats. i have 1999 285 pro elite and love it. i have the original 175 johnson fast strike outboard that has never been abused and i still do regular compression check on it and all cyclinders have 120p of compress in each.
Another good one that Johhny stuck a fork in. Can't wait until he pulls the plug on ranger.
My first was a 91 275 with a 150hp. Loved it. But Phoenix boats reminds me of a stratos probably because Phoenix president came from stratos
I just watched about the stratos 176xt 2008. I got it new with a 50 mercury. I love this boat fishing in P.A not a lot of big water here but I use it on Erie it works very well
I’ve got a 285 Pro XL. Got the 175 Johnson Fast Strike. My transom was rebuilt beautifully. But no one. And I mean no one will mess with that wiring around me. I’ve got a custom color scheme. Emerald blue with black and silver accent. I absolutely love the boat. Even with the wiring BS. One day I’ll rewire that bizz
My first one was a 1990 274dc with a 150 intruder it was pretty good. . I then got a 1999 21. ss extreme with a 225 Johnson it was terrible rode like a slug and had the electronic dash panel that didn’t last long. I then got a 2002 20xlprostar with a 225 efi merc. I still have it today and it has been excellent!! Always wanted a 201 pro but just never happened.
Just picked up a 2000 295 Pro Elite with a 2020 ProXS 150 that looks like a black and blue jig that's been on the lake bottom (lived outside uncovered for sometime) . Aluminum lids, huge dual live wells, fast hull that rides so frikking smooth + easy to drive.
My first bass boat was a 270, my 2nd a 201 pro XL DC, and my 3rd a Triton TR-186. All great boats for the money and I still miss that 201 Pro.
I’ve got a 2005 294 with a 2012 200hp optimax and I love it the boat handles rough water incredibly and loaded with 3 people live wells full and a full tank of gas it runs 65 but with a light load and one person it easily does high 60’s and low 70’s.

What...... You never mentioned my Stratos. I have the rare less than 200 built 1988 Stratos 200 VT Rocket designed by Roark Summerford. The STV guy. Sporting the Evinrude 200 XP I have the most perfect one left in existance. With the matching trailer of course.
Yeah, Johnny Morris and White River Marine bought them and shut them down in 2017🙄 Johnny had to eliminate the competition.
Stratos was bought by Johnny Morris in 2016 I believe and shut down that year. The old legend plant is the triton plant now, I haven't seen anything interesting there.

I’ve got a 96 - 285 Pro XL and it’s a great boat. Completely agree about the wiring. I’m looking to re-do most of the wiring and I’d like to get away from the ridiculous switches and fuses on the side panel and just go to rocker style switches. Are you aware of anyone who makes aftermarket replacement panels to put in new switches?
I road in one on Toledo Bend back in the early to mid 90's and was not impressed. I guess after owning my 186 DC Champ at that time I was spoiled to a better ride. Sorry guys but it was the way I felt about the Stratos boat back then. Andy thanks for the channel, it has been great.

Running a 2004 295 ProXL with 200 Vmax and love it. Go to boat shows every year looking for my next ride and see no reason to drop 90K for basically just a shiny new boat with 4 stroke. Maybe one day. Always entertaining and good stuff. Thanks.
I absolutely loved the two Stratos 285's I had.... Incredible boats that I really miss
Never been in an outright Champion, but the Champ-Tos hull is probably the smoothest rough water ride I've ever been in!
I have had two champion boats. Would not own anything else. Smooth ride, comfortable ride and the most stable hull in rough water I have been in. Try one. You won't be disappointed. Stratos is an excellent boat as well.

Love my 95 201 F/S powered by a Johnson 200 but the wiring and plumbing is the nightmare, my goal for this year is complete rewire and simplification.
I owned a 179, 275,285, and 201 proxl. Great boats.

Another casualty of acquisition by tracker. They were part of the purchase of ranger and triton. By that time they had been reduced to the "entry level boat" with a fold out passenger console and appeared to have a deep draft though I never rode in one. By this time the 210 elite had been discontinued and champion and javelin lines dropped. That was the basic story as I remember it anyways. My wife always thou the fold out console was a nifty idea 🤔
I own a 06 stratos 285 pro xl and love it wouldn't want any other boat absolutely no wood anywhere in the boat

My dad ran 3 different Stratos boats over the early to late 90s. Last one was a 96 201 Pro XL with a 225 Johnson Venom. Ran like a raped ape and handled the big stuff really well. Still one of the best looking boats in my eyes.
What color was that boat by chance?

Spot on. I had a 95 285 pro XL with a fast strike until early this year. Sold it and bought a 2008 285 pro xl with a 150 opti. It’s amazing how 13 years later the boat almost rides and drives the exact same. Wiring is a bitch and who needs 37 switches.
Loved my 03 185 (285) Stratos. It was forest green gold silver and funny enough my next boat was a 2008 294 was in forest green gold olive. Good boats. Currently own a ranger but would gladly get into a 200xl or 201xl
I loved my stratos a lot of guys run them up here in Canada. I was going to upgrade but they closed the doors. If they open up I’d buy one.
I was told Johnny Morris of bass pro bought it and killed the company. I have a 2013 stratos 176vlo 17.5 glass boat with mercury 75 on it and I love it I wanted a small boat that wasn’t aluminum and it’s amazing for what but is. Fully loaded and me and my buddy both big guys we run 40-45 mph. And thing get amazing gas mileage for 2 stroke .

I wanted a Stratos 285 more than anything back in the day. I was young, could barely afford it but I had saved a decent down payment and was ready to buy. Went to the dealer and they would NOT even talk to me….lol

I have a 285 pro xl love it .....but please tell me legend is coming back I was in the market when Mr Morris bought it and closed it. If the v20 legend is coming back please hit me up I'm buying a new boat next spring and would love it to be a legend.

I have a 21 pro XL bought in 2003 still awesome boat got live scope all tracks Hummingbird 360 mega and on the council I got Hummingbird side imaging
I had my transom go out on my 91 295pro. I put a 2006 3.0 Optimax 200 on it and it ran so amazing up until then.
I’m just curious potentially for future benefit. Was the optimax you put on there heavier than the original motor? And were you running power poles? I know they were both two stroke but was one lesser or more horsepower than the other. I’ve been warned by a good buddy to meet as close to exact specifications for transom weight especially on older boats. That’s why I won’t run power poles on my 93 285 pro xl
Had a buddy that had a Strat back in the 90's. My back has never been the same after riding in that boat! Don't remember the model, but it was 18.5 with a 150 Merc. Worst riding boat I have ever been in.
What about the later models? Have my eye on a 2013 202 elite.
I had a 2008 285 pro xl it was a great boat but I will definitely agree the switches where a shit show! Keep up the great work, love this series

Spot on once more sir. Stratos was a premium brand thru the 90s. Then genmar/ranger got hold of them and cheapened them up so to not compete with their pet lard ass barge rangers imo.
The 201,200, 294, and 285 would and could be top shelf hulls today. Sad they were killed off along with the champ hulls. The asx 201 in the early 2000s was bad to the bone fast. The 200 will blow the doors off about any other boat in its class. That hull started back in the early to mid 90s as the javelin 400. Speedy hull, good rough water handling boat.
The evolution hulls and interior layouts were dam good boats.
Your exactly right wiring and rigging was a nightmare on them and to dam many switches on the mid to late 90s boats. Aside from some resin change issues in early 2000s they were solid boats. I believe late 90s xl models had some stringer problems too.

Stratos was bought and killed by Johnny Morris, just like legend he killed the companies that made a better product because it threatened Nitro which we all know is a POS! I just traded in a ‘99 285 Pro Elite and for an 18’ foot boat it was an absolute beast, I hung a Zuke on it because of y’all! I now have a Falcon with a 250SS and it’s awesome!!

I traded my 85 Stratos for a 95 181 champion. Then traded that for a 99 R91 Ranger which I still own. Holy crap didn’t realize every boat I bought went out of business
Hay guys can you do a video on the bolt on the trim pin that falls out on the new mercury pro xs it happened to me and messed me up on New Year’s Day I think it could help a lot of people I didn’t know it was a problem and never checked it !!well it backed out and I would imagine you know how the rest of the story goes
Wrecked swivel bracket??? Or what did it do? We've had 2 guys up here that have it happen to them
It’s at the shop now I’m not sure the damage but the pin backed out about 2” because the bolt fell out and I could not trim up and the motor and it would not run over 40 when I tried it would shake like crazy it was like a rev limiter to protect the motor because it thought the motor was trimmed higher than it really was because it was not index right I had to pull the sensor off tapped the pin back in and I was able to run the trim to get out of the water huge pain in the ass I did not know this was a thing until it happened to me it probably wouldn’t hurt to let everybody know what to look for from what I was told there was a batch of motors that went out from mercury and they did not put Loctite on that bolt there is a bulletin and a fix for it I believe

Still own a 1994 stratos 270 with moded 150 intruder. Runs great. Still looks like brand new. Hard to get my fishing buddy's to go on big lake if the sissies think I'm going to open er up. Love the boat and motor.

Heads modified by Monty racing , fitch reed cages , modified exaust tuner , carbon fiber reeds and I also have the big carbs. Solid lower mounts and raker prop modified for
Merc vent plugs.

Remember when you talked about a side by side comparison of the old transom savers and the dd26. Still waiting but i think i lnow why it never happened lol.
Haha yeah we do remember that. Originally we were going to try to get permission from the local county boys in blue to strap Jordan to a flat bed trailer and run him up alongside the boats but to do it on a 2 lane interstate requires state approval and we are still waiting on that.

I have a 1988 stratos 279v with a yamaha prov 150 any thoughts about the boat and motor
as a owner of a 1990 201 pro elite, and to buy a 1997 285 , yep nice seats in the 97 , but the hull rode poorly compared to the 90 . glad i kept the 201 only had the 97 2 yrs and sold it. the 201 by far run smoother and handled corners way better. she still fishes like a champ today other than the evinrude looper parts. soon i will put a 225 suzuki on it. only rated for 235, my transom started to get soft so i completely removed the ply and filled it with seacast. other than that it has all the original pumps etc other than main bilge.. carpet turned from sky blue to black all the lids are aluminum and the carpet replaced with tuff coat ,, no more worthless carpet . its like a intercoastal now. oh flasher went in 2004. and rebuilt power head,,,lol brand new it was 17,497 miss them days . and in 2012 the omc TM head lost 2nd speed. remember when things lasted?? like my chargepro 3 bank on the go charger only lasted 28 yrs called them to see if it could be fixed. lol guy said you still have one
