I’m in my 60s and have been listening to music my entire life. NO ONE sounds like Eddie Vedder. Not just his voice, but how he’s basically living within the song with his delivery and emotions. Which is super rare. When you figure it out, let us know. I love this band. In my top 10 of all time. Vedder’s voice is in my top 5.

I just watched a couple of your grunge reactions and nice work man. I can tell you are really appreciating the music. Pearl Jam had a heap of great songs. A couple of the albums were near perfection. Grunge was an awesome soundtrack to a wild post school life. I saw them a couple of times in Australia. Once in a skybox above the stage. It was epic.
We need music like this today. Actual talent, musicianship, skill and emotion. Half of todays music could be done on a phone app without any skill, musical knowledge, or talent.

These 7 albums came out within 44 days of each other in late 1991. It was a very good year.:

      Pearl Jam, Ten
Guns N’ Roses, Use Your Illusion I
Guns N’ Roses, Use Your Illusion II
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik

      Nirvana, Nevermind

@@newgrl Yeah, epic times. I saw them all live.
There were also big albums from U2, Lenny Kravitz, Sepultura, Smashing Pumpkins, Faith No More, Cypress Hill, REM, Primal Scream etc. By the end of the decade, the guitar solo had mostly been killed off and most tunes had become simple bar chord affairs.
1990 to about 1996 was a real sweet spot for quality music.

I'm thinking perhaps you heard them in passing back in school? He really does have that kind of voice that if you heard it even briefly a few times, years later you might hear it again and recognize it. My understanding is that he was actually very ill when they did this, a flu or something, and he had been particularly worried about doing this song, which is pretty demanding vocally. He seems to deliberately push himself, maybe to psyche himself up to it? Or maybe he just didn't want to use the sickness as an excuse for laying back. I believe some of the people you can hear really whooping towards the end were friends of his in the audience, aware of how he was feeling, encouraging him, and being impressed by how great he still sounded...

Emotionally his maturity may remind you of Neil Young. He is able to express the song in a similar way as Neil, though in my opinion Eddie surpassed Neil in his ability to live within the emotion of the lyrics.
Vocally, the ease with which he flips between head voice, falsetto, and diaphragm combined with his breath control make him superior to most, though Cornell had more octaves and was equally expressive.
    Great reaction!

Eddie Vedder was a _master_ lyricist with both an incredible voice and stage presence. But enunciation was... not so important. Sometimes, I'm not sure even Eddie knew what he was singing in Yellow Ledbetter. If you listen to more Pearl Jam, I strongly suggest you bring up the lyrics somewhere and follow along. The recorded song is a little bit different than this, but I think you would see the genius a bit better if you could understand more of what was said.
"And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything."
One of my favorite lyrics lines of all time, from any band is:
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky. But why can't it be mine?"
