  • This is the fourth part of the San Francisco Trolleybus and Tram series.
    This time our journey actually begins in foggy Daly City. Though this is technically not San Francisco but a suburb, this is the outer terminus of trolleybus line 14, which is operated by articulated Škoda 15TrSF vehicles. The film then follows Mission street (showing plenty of 15TrSFs) until we reach Balboa park, one of the greater hubs on the tram network.
    We then turn over to the busy intersection of Junipero Serra and Sloat Blvds, and follow the M and K tram lines up to West Portal Station, where the tracks go underground. The film then concludes with several scenes around Castro Station, including some heritage streetcars that run on the F line.
    Index:
    00:00 - Daly City loop
    01:08 - Mission and Wilson Streets
    01:55 - Mission Street and Whipple Avenue
    02:10 - Mission Street and Foote Avenue
    02:49 - Mission Street and Geneva Avenue
    02:59 - Ocean Avenue and San José Avenue
    05:21 - Curtis E. Green light rail center (depot)
    07:06 - Ocean Avenue and Geneva Avenue
    07:48 - Junipero Serra Blvd and Sloat Blvd
    09:34 - West Portal Avenue and 15th Street
    09:59 - West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street
    11:51 - West Portal Station
    12:59 - Castro Station
    14:36 - Market Street and Castro Street
    16:10 - 18th Street and Castro Street

    San Francisco has one of the best public transportation systems in the country. For a mere $75 a month (Clipper card) you get unlimited rides.
    The city is comparatively small (49 sq miles) so you can get practically anywhere on public transit and never worry about finding a parking spot. Using the NextBus feature on your phone means you can track when the bus or train will arrive.

    You were so lucky to catch the electric trolleybuses doing the 49-Van Ness/Mission line since those buses have been (temporarily) replaced by Muni's New Flyer Xcelsior XDE60 low-floor buses and Neoplan AN460 high-floored diesel coaches since 23 April 2016. The main reason: the Van Ness Avenue corridor between Market Street and Lombard Street will be upgraded soon to become a full-blown BRT line, which will require reconstructing the roadway for at least two years.

    3:55 in Hannover Germany there's a tram like this, but most overground stops has high platforms on completely Plattform length and first vehicles hasn't the steps for being compatible with low platforms. That makes it possible for wheelchair users to enter the tram on each door

    Very klassy trolleybus power supply multiple crossing :D
    In Europe knowns for 135yrs, very frequent in central and eastern Europe, or at continent at all..
    At now in the most of cities and towns centers begin operating hybrids of trolley and diesel or trolley and electrobus .. Just Trolley... In this times, a power supply cables are not allowed in everywhere, for example - in a city centers - they have allowed to drive as an electrobuses only, from saved energy in batteries .
    For the rest of route, when they´re powered by cables, they´re charging the batteries.. But for an American city - still very solid job SF !

    Amazing that they can keep standard wall phones ( for whatever purpose they serve) at Castro Station, without them being stolen or damaged.

    • @punchnazis3498
      @punchnazis3498 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol why would anyone try to steal some useless old maintenance/emergency phone that's attached to the wall (which makes it pretty hard to steal anyways). Trust me if there was a reason or if it were easy to steal them, it would happen all the time, and they wouldn't be there...there's no shortage of theft in SF, which has one of the highest property crime rates in the US. I'm sure they do get damaged sometimes though.

    Someone explain the point of trolleybuses?

    • @AlexTheRailroader
      @AlexTheRailroader 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      zero emissions. They do not utilize diesel or gasoline because they draw electricity from the overhead wires. So they are used in cities like San Francisco where clean air is demanded from public transportation.

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange  8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Also, trolleybuses manage very well with steep terrain (like in San Francisco) as electric motors have much better torque than diesel engines. Moreover, the ride is smoother, and they are quieter.

    • @oscardaone
      @oscardaone 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see. However, wouldn't light rails already do that despite construction cost?

    • @AlexTheRailroader
      @AlexTheRailroader 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      oscardaone light rails can't go up San Francisco's steep hills, the incline is too steep, the light rails would simply slide back down the hill, you need friction, like a rubber tire, -ergo trolley busses :)

    I don't like BRTs at all, but BRTs should seriously be made using trolleybuses· It would be so much better· Imagine all the pollution from all-diesel BRTs··· Ecologically outrageous·

    • @Zarastroika
      @Zarastroika 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Magno Toledo Sim, eu fiz uma crítica· Os problemas do BRT é que os ônibus são inteiramente a diesel, aumentando as emissões e poluição ao longo das linhas·
      Outro detalhe que devo realçar é que BRTs são esses corredores com estações e infraestrutura baseada na de sistemas sobre trilhos· Muitas cidades, a maioria na América Latina, estão implantando esse sistema, você disse que quase todas as cidades possuem, mas várias cidades médias possuem ônibus articulados e biarticulados normais que circulam pelas ruas e não tem as portas altas que os modelos específicos de BRT têm, esses ônibus são como os convencionais na operação e portanto, não caracterizam como BRTs·
      Chegando logo no Brasil, BRTs seriam ideais apenas em cidades entre 75~500 mil habitantes, cidades a partir de 500 mil já são bem crescidas para um sistema de trem · pensando em composições de 8 carros, tipo SuperVia/CPTM· O problema é que capitais estão tentando iludir a população praticamente dizendo que BRT é metrô sobre rodas e que será mais que suficiente pra transportar MILHÕES de pessoas·
      No Brasil, há um lobby histórico das viações e fabricantes, que propinam políticos e tornaram o Brasil um país exclusivamente rodoviário· Hoje vemos diariamente as consequências urbanas, sociais e econômicas disso, metrópoles estão paralisando completamente por conta dos engarrafamentos·
      Além da implantação dos BRTs, as prefeituras, satisfazendo interesses privados · já que até transporte virou mercadoria no Brasil · removem muitas linhas normais de ônibus, forçando as áreas atendidas a usarem o BRT, e em vários lugares que antes a pessoa precisava pegar 1 ou 2 ônibus, agora precisam pegar 3 ou 4, e ainda muito mais cheios que antes· Mesmo que nenhuma linha de ônibus fosse removida, o sistema já nasce saturado por ter de atender uma demanda multiplicada várias vezes a capacidade máxima possível do sistema·
      Menos ônibus pelas ruas + articulados em canaletas = mais lucro, mais gente prensada usando menos ônibus, mais saturação· Metrópoles como RJ e SP nunca irão solucionar definitivamente o tráfego enquanto não possuírem uma vasta rede integrada de metrô e trem, por toda suas regiões metropolitanas· 1, 2 ou 4 milhões de pessoas em ônibus é burrice total, tortura pública, é plantar o caos·

    • @Zarastroika
      @Zarastroika 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Magno Toledo Há o lobby rodoviário que «segura» os projetos ferroviários no Brasil· Por conta disso, é um milagre aparecer aqui um VLT novo ou um sistema novo de trem/metrô·
      No Brasil, muitas cidades tradicionais tiveram redes de bondes, mas o lobby rodoviário ganhou força, políticos da época iludiram a população dizendo que o bonde era antigo, antiquado, e eles foram varridos pouco depois em favor dos ônibus e carros·
