    What a delicious video! Front to back a complete delight! Ironbridge seems a sweet community, devoted to upholding the importance of such a masterful edifice. The abbey was a charmer which must have been a delight to wander slowly through. The chapter house's vaulted ceiling is so impressive, showing each stone lovingly placed by devoted artisans. And those floor tiles! Your patience and forethought in filming it for us is most appreciated! So loved seeing the steps and walls. Wow. Your care in presenting its beauties is enjoyed so much. Thank you, Alan, for taking us along!

    Thank you for taking us on this wonderful journey into the past. That bridge is an astonishing record of the skill of the early engineers and ironworkers. Just loved the Abbey, those vaulted ceilings, OMG! Loved the little old church and churchyard too. So very English and something that we just don't get to see down this way.
    Stay safe and well. Cheers from Down-under.

    Iron bridge brings to mind seeing all the different iron bridges across canals and rivers on the various narrowboaters I've subscribed to. Being a model builder and a railway modeler my brain defaults to looking at them through a filter of "How would one best make a model of that?". It is fun to see all the various styles of iron bridges.

    We studied the Ironbridge during my Civil Engineering degree about a hundred years ago. Although it is cast iron it is held together using carpentry techniques - dowels and wedges - and I think is therefore unique.

We've been out to Malta a couple of times to get away from the worst of our winter weather and will have to disappoint you about the Maltese buses. They were all replaced with the London 'bendy buses' but these were found to be of no use on the islands roadways and have been replaced with more modern coaches. Hope Jasminne and you enjoyed your break. Our narrowboat SAMPHIRE is moored at Welton Marina so we may see you this summer out on the cut. Keep safe, Regards, Brian and Laurie 👍👍

    Hi Alan, today I was watching Michael Portillo on one of his famous railway trips in the south west.

    What a surprise when Michael introduced you and you proceeded to explain what the site was all about.
    Very interesting, but what intrigued me was this younger Alan with his very trim beard.

    Hopefully despite the weather you enjoyed your visit to the iron bridge gorge. It is said that the moulding cast on the centre most of the arch of the bridge (14:22 in your vid), shows the silhouette of Abraham darby's face when looked up at from roughly that position .

      @@MyNarrowboatVenture yes, we owned 2 houses in Ironbridge, the first 2 cottages knocked into one and then 3 knocked into one on church hill. In the late 60s early 70s people were abandoning cottages, selling them to the council for a few pounds, I know of some that sold for 30 pounds. 5 years after we completed the first 2 we sold them for 12 thousand! We moved out of Ironbridge in 83 after Thatcher came to power and destroyed a lot of industry in the west Midlands as she did in other parts of the UK. I was out of work for nearly 2 years. The rumour was that the town was to be knocked down and the valley made into a park with just the church and a few buildings left, what with the new town with indoor toilets when we arrived a lot of the houses had been abandoned!

      @@richardwhite2736 I am so sorry to hear of your difficulties, even I 'moved on' when she came to power! My last visit to Ironbridge was in 2011, so it had already changed considerably since you left.

      @@MyNarrowboatVenture it's all water under the Ironbridge now, we left in 83 and moved to South Wales. I still have a lot of friends up there, there was a folk club in the meadow pub (you past it on the way to the Abbey), we formed a Morris side known as the Iron Men, with a ladies side The Severn Guilders, they are still going with new members and dance on the bridge on high days and holidays. The folk club no longer meets in the meadow but I think there is a a folk night in The Boat at Jackfield? I'm not sure you went down that way on your day trip, but the old canal and incline plane are at Coalport, it was a busy place in it's day with boats being loaded with raw materials from the canal, the boats then heading back down the river. Interesting history in one small place! I could go on about the area!

    Is it a common thing for UK English to have the word order River Severn, River Thames, et cetera? If it had been an English river instead of a US river, would the Missouri River which my town lies along have had its name given as River Missouri?

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The word River does generally come before the name. I always think though that the River Great Ouse would sound better as the Great Ouse River! So yes, River Missouri.
