- Hi guys,
In today's video I share my experience with Onycholysis, basically a result of nail damage. I am still not completely sure how it happened, but a bloodtest revealed that I have no medical condition and everything seems normal.
Here I have an Amazon Associate account where I linked all my favorite nail care/nail art items, including similar products used in the video;

It happened to me, it was worse than yours. I continued using nail polish (i was too embarassed 🥺) i cleaned my nails and cuticles every night with hydrogen peroxide and after 3 months they were normal again, THANK GOD. I was shocked the first days but guys your healthy nails will come back!!!!!!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I also continued using nail polish for 1 month, but soon I realised it got worse and worse. Cutting the affected nails was the most effective way to a recovery💕
I have been suffering from a year😢 ,still it's persisting
@@Chandini_S what happened 😢 did it get better?
@@MastermindNicaHi it's gone by itself , i didn't use any medication for it,just keep them dried all the time
I am almost positive this happened while getting gel nails done at the salon. The burning sensations I was getting under the UV lamps were an indicator of the damage to come and ignored my instincts 😔 …hopefully these tips will help my poor nails recover. Thanks for posting ❤️
It could be true, the main cause is any kind of damage. Getting gel nails can cause a heat spike but it should only last a few seconds. I hope you get well soon❤
Yes you are absolutely right. I recently did gel back in February and the gel started to peel and when I removed it, low and behold, this ish. Smh. I had a nail fungus that I cured and then I did this and here we are. Smh. Never again
I see alot of people said this started after getting gel nails! And am speaking from experience! Gels nails does do this!
i accidentally lifted part of my thumb nail trying to open a bottle. thank you for giving us progress pics and their date. While not as it used to be im so glad it can be treated. I was sooo upset thinking my nail would be permanently damaged, now im feeling better
I am happy this makes you feel better❤
I started having this problem last December. All my nails separated from the nail bed, over 1/2 way down. I had splinter haemorrhages in most nails. I’d been wearing Born Pretty Halo polish for years, but my last batch severely damaged my nails. Went to Dr, thinking fungal infection, test came back negative.
Took me 6 months to get my nails “presentable” again.
Put Born Pretty Halo on, and within 3 days, my nails are lifting.
Apparently this is a known problem with the Holographic BP Polish.
Lots of reports to FDA in the US(I’m in UK), but no lawsuits as company is Chinese. BP will not divulge the exact ingredients in the Holo, so it could be absolutely anything.
My nails are once again a complete mess- I thought I must have a serious health problem, but thankfully I’ve confirmed its just this polish. Wish something could be done about a company, that puts profit before people’s health. 😥
Thank you so much for your comment! I have used bornpretty polishes in the past, I think that could possibly caused lifting! I stopped using their products about 2 years ago, so shady. I hope your nails will heal💕
This happened to me!
After years of it repeatedly happening whenever my nails were long, I worked out it was caused by chemical burns to the nail bed from NAIL POLISH!
I test lots of brands and the only type of nailpolish that does not do this to me now, is water based nailpolish (Acquerella)
I'm glad you found the cause! Yes, nail polish allergy is a thing, even though a gel or acrylic allergy is more common. Keep taking care of your nails💕
Thank you and so glad yours is getting better. I also have this and several times the opaque white part of the nail will grow out and then almost overnight it returns and my nail bed remains more reddish instead of pretty pink. It's so embarrassing. Been working with a derm for treatment. I hope one day mine will clear up as yours has.
Ahw I feel so sad to hear that💔Have you tried tea tree oil? I am sure you will find a solution together with your dermatologist, it could be something medical..
What treatments did the derm have you do to treat your nails? 💅
Yeah I think mine was caused because I cleaned the undersides too much😥 Now the skin under my nails has grown a lot and it bugs me, but I refrain from removing it cause onycholosis is really scary to experience, thanks for sharing! The tee tree is a very good idea, I’ll keep that in mind
Thank you for sharing your experience with me💕I hope we will both fully recover!
Thank you for the video. I got a severe allergy to gel polish and builder in a bottle. I’m currently recovering and know it will take time. Years ago around 10 I got a fugus from Opi nail oil pen I haven’t used a nail pen since thinking maybe the oil went rancid, it was in all 10 nails and I still suffer from it. I used to always dig under my nails but since I watched your video I definitely won’t anymore. Thanks again
For the people that have been asking me; the exact products I used are listed in the description box!!
Thank you Michelle, I had the same cause. I used a sharp tool went up under the nail and got the Onycholysis too. Thanks for confirming the same cause. I am Michelle too :)
I am experiencing this right now and it's very frustrating because i love wearing my nails quite long and i obviously have to quit gel extensions for at least a few months :( but i think when i get extensions again i will go for acrylics: no uv lamp curing i guess will mean less damage.
Thank you for this video!
I've been dealing with this for I don't even know how many years now. More than 10 now I think. I never knew what the problem was with my nails and thought I was just weird. It's slightly embarassing just because it can make your nails look pretty odd. Unfortunately, I'm basically dealing with Onycholysis in every single one of my fingernails. Yikes. I JUST finished using a pointy object to clean out all the skin build up when I finally figured out what it was and ran across your video. I don't know if I could ever get my nails back to looking "normal". But I will definitely stop cleaning them with pointy tools. The weird thing is that I never was OCD about cleaning under my nails when the Onycholysis first started, but after each nail started becoming detached, I became senstive about the way they looked and started cleaning them more and more. Wish I would have done more research about this years ago, but I am glad to finally know exactly what is going on. No one could ever give me an answer as to why my nails looked the way they do, so that is at least one silver lining. I'm a guy by the way, so I suppose most guys aren't really dedicating a ton of time to thinking about their nails, but it is def something that can make you feel a bit insecure.
Also a dude here and it does make me insecure especially since I play guitar. I’m so glad this kind lady made this video ☺️. Good luck bro
I’ve also been dealing with if you a year do you have any advise?
@@CarlosPerez-ek6ls Probably just do what the video says and apply diluted tea tree oil to your nails. The video and op said not to clean it with pointy objects. I've been doing it for like 2 weeks, and not results yet. If you ask me like 2 months later, I can give you an update.
Thank you for sharing your story! I see your comment only now :/. I hope that it will heal, just try to ignore the annoying skin growing like crazy under the nail (very tempting to remove and touch it I know) but it will be alright :)
Comments like this put a smile on my face, all I want is to help others :)
I had fake nails and ended up with this, I am checking my doctor tomorrow 🙃
Goodluck!
I have this on one I think I accidentally cleaned too much and now it's dang near halfway down the nail! I'm super scared and dont know what to do...my nails are like my prized posession and I worry I will have it fall off forever or something all the medical articles say it wont reattach! Please help!!
This is very interesting and helpful, thank you for sharing 💖
You are welcome❤
I quite obviously have this, but my mom doesn’t believe me and won’t take me to a dermatologist
Hii if you tried the tea tree oil treatment and you don't see any results, I would recommend going to a dermatologist. I wish you goodluck girl❤
You have beautiful nails 💅
OPI Repair Mode caused this on my fingernails and my 2 big toenails…. I guess there’s a lot of us that this has happened to after using Repair mode ☹️ I’m sad. I cut my nails off and not using polish for a while.
I’m crying right now, this happened to me days ago after taking off gel manicure, my nails were so thin , and as time passed I noticed that my nails started separating from nail bed and became white just like what happened to you
I just cut everything and my nails are very small compared to what They looked before , the hyponichium is visible now I can even touch it and I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO
I’m stressed and I hope that The hyponichium that’s visible won’t be affected
What can I do ? 💔😭😭
I would avoid touching water and hydrate your nails with any oil mixed with tea tree oil every day❤
@@thenailpolishbottle7267 thank you for your advice , dermatologist told me to put vaseline daily , an antifungal every night and to take vitamins that grow nails ... i’m gonna do what you told me too and hope that it will heal... thank you for your answer and by the way your video was very helpful ❤️
This is what acrylics and gels do after time...all of my nails are ruined from gels and acrylics...this will happen to many women...more and more women are wearing fake nails with these bad chemicals... Thank God it's finally coming out because they denied this for so long That fake nails can ruin your real nails
Thank you for the film. It was extremely informative.
I am glad you enjoyed it!❤
This happens to me when I accidentally poke my nail for example, when I was cleaning my brush and it ended up poking the inside of nail.
Yes, it can definitely damage the hyponychium🥺
I have this problem my half thumbnail seprate from nail bed what i do plzzz help me ..can i cut my half nail after this my nail cure or not..new nail growing without oncholysis or not plz help what i do😢😢😢
Hi both my toddlers are getting this but it starts lifting from the back, at the cuticles how can I fix it
Iam suffering this disease now..iam depressed
It will eventually fade away! It took almost 6 months for me to go away completely🥰
I've been dealing with it on every single one of my fingernails for probably close to 10 years now, and JUST TODAY found out it's even a "condition" with a name. Yes, it's a little embarrassing, but seriously, don't let yourself get depressed over some stupid finger nails. Once you can sort of let the insecurity of them go, you can learn that it's a silly, and very small, cosmetic issue. If someone asks you, "YOOOO, WTF is wrong with your fingernails BRUHHH?!?" Don't let it embarrass you. Just simply tell them it's Onycholysis and that you are aware that your nails look weird. I'm dealing with Onycholysis PLUS male pattern baldness at a fairly young age, and let me tell you, the insecurity with the hair thing is definitely a struggle for guys in that situation. But you really have to sit yourself down and ask yourself, am I going to let these things dictate my mood and stop me from doing things or wearing things? No. I'm sure it's impossible for anyone to not care what EVERYONE thinks about them, but the freedom of not caring what MOST people think about you is so liberating. Truly being comfortable with yourself is a weight that no one even considers the scale of until that weight gets lifted off of their shoulders. Good luck to you.
@@7evYT hey friend.thank you for your words..u normalised this whole bad situation

can u use only jajoba oil or should be mixed with the tea tree?
The tea tree oil is the effective ingredient here. The jojoba oil is used to dilute the tea tree oil. Jojoba oil is the most hydrating oil out there though just not fixing the disease🥰
How much tea tree oil with the oil should I use? Like two drops one?
Yea that should be fine!
Hi I don't use nail polish and I get this white gaps when I clean my nails, can I still follow your instructions to fix this?
Yes you can! Excessive cleaning can cause Onycholysis, diluted tea tree oil helps❤
I really liked your video. I am trying to heal my nails and get them to look like yours but I can’t figure out how much of each product for the nail oil do you use? Like how much jojoba oil and how much tea tree oil do you need to mix to fill up the pen?
Thank you! I would use the tea tree oil as an essential oil, so in one nail oil pen I would add about 3 or 4 drops to not make it too overpowering😁 But no exact measurements, just be sure to use it well diluted!
@@thenailpolishbottle7267 thank you for answering. I will definitely try it now that I have the products.
It’s happened to me about 7 months ago all nails normal except right hand pinky and ring finger. Ring finger looks ok but smile line is flat and lower. The pinky has that slight jagged edge look still. Do you think it’s permanent? No product on nails since it happened and I kept short. I think mine was caused by gel liquids then using dips. I bought a popular brand on Amazon but I really think it’s that because it was on both hands. Had my nails in 2-3 weeks then boom. Because it was on both hands I didn’t think fungus but could be wrong. Due to a liver issue I can’t take anti fungal. How much tea tree oil should I use and can it be added to regular cuticle oils that you buy and use with a dropper or does it ruin that oil? In other words can you use it for a year or more. That’s how long it takes me to go through a big cuticle oil.
Ahw I am sorry that happened to you I read that certain chemicals in polish can cause these issues. I usually put in a cuticle oil pen 3-5 drops of tea tree oil. If you want to add it too a bigger bottle, you should add a 1:8 ratio. 1 drop of tea tree oil and 8 drops of any other oil(s). You can use it up to a year after mixing it together just shake it up before use🥰
There is a link in my bio for my favorite brand jojoba oil which makes the nails grow faster and healthy as well as a good tea tree oil brand of Amazon🥰
What ratio do you dilute the tea tree with the jojoba?
In the total mixture I added about 5 drops of tea tree oil. There is no clear ratio, just use the tea oil as any other essential oil, in moderation🥰
Can you cut off the hollow nail? Cuz I really wanna so it can air out. Only showed up on my big toe when I did gel to go on vacation. NEVER AGAIN! Will it grow back over the space if I cut it off or would u recommend leaving it alone? I use tea tree everyday again
Hi! I am not a doctor but I would not recommend you to cut your nail bed (the pink part) since this is alive tissue. It is fine to cut the free edge for sure. I hope that helps💕
@@thenailpolishbottle7267 thank you for responding. But I meant the nail that's already lifting
@@kittensmitten3287 I think it is the best to leave it alone🥰

thank you for making this video!

Hey do u think my nails should grow back, it is unattached for 3 years
It depends what caused your nail seperation, if it is caused by trauma, it is supposed to heal in about 4-6 months. If it isn't healed after those 6 months, I would recommend you to go to a doctor or dermatologist!
@@thenailpolishbottle7267 okk thank u. Well I was 10 y.o when it happened and i didnt know anything bout it. When i got to know about it ig it was later then I started applying ointment but it didnt attach even if it grew. I couldn't buy tea tree oil as no store had it. Now I found it.

Yes you could try olive oil! The most important ingredient is the tea tree oil🥰
Very scary! Thanks for sharing!
Yes! I am glad you enjoyed the video❤
I didn’t know I was having this, do you think I can still attach even after trimming it off?? 😭😭
It will probably grow back, it just takes A LONG time. I would say to follow the instructions I mentioned in the video and you are good to go.
One important thing to know here is that this condition which is affecting all of my fingers (except my thumbs) can be caused by complications from medications 💊 . In my case a migraine med. Or bye various vacular deficiencies such Raynauld’s syndrome, etc. If your onycholysis is caused by a drug you are talking regularly, or by your degenerating health, then, speaking from experience, it usually starts with one finger, quickly followed by several. Then the condition might even disappear for a few months, but if you are still taking the offending drug, or your health sets back, your fingernails will peel back quickly and worse with time. Personally, I am trying so hard to no longer take any migraine medicines nor NSAIDS to bring the circulation back in my fingertips.
Thank you so much for your detailed comment! Even after doing research online about the causes, I didn't read anything about medicine complications! A few days before I saw signs of nail seperation, I took anti biotics for an internal problem. My doctor said that is was impossible for that medicine to cause Onycholysis. You prove them wrong thank you!
iam also suffering from same onucholysis problem.my 3 fingure nail are detached from nail bed compltely.iam using medicine from last 10 months.if u know any tretement plz inform me
It sounds like you are already trying to fix it, hold on and stay strong❤
I like hoe every one overtime healed but for some reason for me it stayed and i cant touch it if i do it feels like touching my skin and if i try to trim or cut it it burns and hurt never proceeded to cut it though sadly i decided to cut the overgrown hyponychium next week if any one is reading this pls help me it hurts a lot when i touch the hyponychium and i cant cut my nails i leave them long because of it and when i look at my hyponychium i see it attached to my finger skin so its like cutting skin that is not pink but white any one who reads this and knows any way i can get ride of it pls pls tell me because cutting them seems to risky for me .
Hi! That sounds very painful... I know it it too late already to say this but you should not cut any skin tissue (unless it is nail tissue, for example the free edge). Personally, I would advice you to go visit a doctor, in particular a dermatologist. They are the only people that can truly help you and let you recover from this annoying disease. I know it is not easy, I wish you good luck❤
@@thenailpolishbottle7267 ty but i went to a dermatologist and he told me he doesn't know i was confused but he told me to wash my hands so the hyponychium is wet then he told me to braid or cut them with the nail i didn't take his advice since he told me he doesn't know.
@@TheFlrstAndOnly I know only one thing that I researched and that's contact with water is VERY bad. I am not a doctor, but this is a fact. A fungus/infection should never be exposed to water, it attracts bacteria. I would say, apply diluted tea trea oil every night before going to bed and avoid water contact💕

Hi, i am doing this for a week, and for now i cant see any diference, i hope this works because i am desesperate😔
Have you seen any difference?
Sorry for my late reply! I only saw a noticable change after about 2-3 months so it takes a while! Taking progress pics is motivating💕
Can we use coconut oil?
Yes, as long as you add some drops (about 5 for one oil pen) of tea tree oil since that is the oil that treats the fungus💯
I have mine on my right finger and left pointer finger and pinky sides are kinda lifted, at first, I thought it was normal. 😂
There is always a reason why it happens ... I hope you will find out what caused it😁
I think I got this from using a nail hardner.
I started using nail hardner & gel polish for the first time a few months ago, and it started, so I used more hardner and polish to try to fix it, until I googled, and it seemed to make sense.
I always wash my hands super regularly with dish soap throughout the day, and never had an issue until the nail hardner & polish.
Hope this helps anyone.
Also.. Any reccomendations how I can have nice nails if I can't use polish?
I'm considering just buffing.. that's all I've got so far.
Hope everyone is able to get their onycholisis under control.
Thanks for the video, I was not using tea tree but I will give it a go! 🦋
Thank you for sharing your story! I am sorry that happened to you, I learned from reading other comments that gel/nail products allergy is causing it as well. Using tea tree oil will speed up the healing process in my opinion. I would not buff your nails or anything, be as gentle on your nails as possible and try to "ignore" the temporary ugly look❤
@@thenailpolishbottle7267 Thank you!
