“How much Ice cream?” I believe the US had three whole ships dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of ice cream during WWII.

For every front line troop there was 24 American support personnel. Germany had 8 per troop and last year of the war it was 6 or less.

My dad's dad fought in World War II, as the flight engineer and top turret gunner on a B-17 "Flying Fortress" on bombing missions over German occupied Europe. Most of his life, he wouldn't say much about his service. He just said it was a job, and he did it. One thing he did tell about was a narrow escape that he and the rest of the crew he served with had. In early 1945, as the war in Europe was in its final stages, they completed flying 25 successful missions, earning them a month of home leave back in the US. While they were on leave, the plane they had flown on, nicknamed the "Wee Willie", which a different crew was flying on while they were on leave, was shot down by anti-aircraft fire on a mission. A member of another B-17 crew took pictures of the plane breaking up in the air after being hit (one of which can be seen in the Wikipedia article about B-17s). Grandpa always said he was glad he wasn't on the "Wee Willie" for THAT mission!

I've been learning a lot about various wars recently (including about the ice cream ships :P ), mostly thanks to The Fat Electrician here on YT. Fair warning, his way of explaining history, while very interesting, also frequently includes profanity (for those who are sensitive to that). his mannerisms also may not be fore everyone. Nevertheless, it's 20x more interesting than any of my history classes in school. Anyway, the point is that this story was more interesting because I actually knew something about the background of the war. Very well narrated!

It's implied that he was the medieval saint the church was built to honor. He spoke a different dialect of French than the priest from the church because the French language had changed over the centuries but was proficient in Latin and could thus communicate with the priest in that language, which the US Army chaplain also understood, and was thus freaked out by the conversation between the burnt man and the priest.
