I switched from Garmin Forerunner 245 to the regular Suunto Race and I love it. I'm not a big HR geek nor am I a super competitive runner so no big deal for me. But the hardware is great (no plastic) for the price and I'm extremely happy with it. This one looks great too. Extremely happy with my move so far.
Well, except for biking. That one example you gave was worse than any optical watch I have used (Apple & Garmin for years) and would kind of be a deal breaker. Was it always that bad or did you just use it those two times on a bike? Have you asked Suunto about it? I know you said lots of optical sensors struggle with biking but that looked completely useless - maybe fit? or location?
I’ve seen plenty of reviews these days, it seems like the RaceS is bad at HR, GPS (distance +10~20m/km), lap counting for pool swimming, sleep tracking, and blood oxygen 😅 it is just a watch for hiking

Currently evaluating race s, Fenix 8, and enduro 3. I’d be giving up a few nice to have features by going Suunto but dang the build quality, hr, gps accuracy and PRICE are making it tough to justify Garmin. I’m hoping for a Vertical Titanium Amoled without the crown. Tried original Race last year and the crown drove me nuts especially playing golf. It is no issue with the S. Well done Suunto.
Very happy with the Race S. Mapping is incredible on hikes and has been surprisingly reliable. Sapphire glass isn't a deal breaker since I put a screen protector on anyway.
@@ChristianSlagter Sorry late reply. Hopefully you found a screen protector. I used this off Amazon: B0D81F331T. Since the glass is flat edge to edge, it almost looks stock. Battery life is great. Like 3 days easily without charging.
My only issue with all these Suunto, Coros and Polar watches is that they keep ommiting ANT+. I spend a lot of time racing indoors and having ANT+ is an absolute must when my Bluetooth power meter is already busy sending it's power info to the tablet. I absolutely need that ANT+ on the watch so it can receive the power data. Oh well! I think Suunto is missing out on a lot of customers, because in addition to other people needing what I need, they also push Garmin on their friends so they can all be in the same ecosystem. As much as I like Suunto, Coros and Polar, my girlfriend and her friends and all my friends I push to Garmin solely because of the ANT+. It's a bigger deal than most people think.
@user-ur4lv4zh4h probably not, but it would be an easy addition to their future watches. I don't just indoor cycle but I do enough where it matters. I can see cyclists picking Garmin over Suunto because of that and then they're in the eco system. Hard to leave

I hope some of these software updates and optimizations come to the vertical too. I have auto pause activated on my runs and I cant stand how Ill stop in a run in the mountains to check the map to see if Im on trail and I cant because it paused and then I have to resume in order to access the map. Many of those little tweaks to the workout apps are super appreciated and I hope they come to the Vertical in addition to the Race.
I bought Suunto Race S for sprint kayaking but immediately realized the problem with it. The AMOLED display is bright enough in the sunlight but the backlight turns off after 18 seconds. And there is no option to keep it on during workout. I asked this from Suunto support and they responded that all Amoled watches have constant backlight option removed because it drains the battery. The Suunto Race S works well when I use it on my wrist, but the missing backlight is making it unusable when the watch is on a separate holder, like on a kayak deck or bike mount etc. After 18 seconds I can't see anything, just because I can't use the watch on my wrist when doing a sprint kayaking workout. I hope they fix this and let me worry about the battery and charge it more often. 😊
Great review. Would suggest a short comparison of platforms as in case of Polar the Flow platform works great and makes me hesitate to look elsewhere, even when watch is this good as Suunto.

Excellent video and very interesting watch :) is the performance update, the climb assist (and all other software changes) coming to the Suunto vertical?
Did they fix the ability to prevent dim mode for a specific sport. If I attach my race to the bike handlebars and go cycling then it would go dark after a few seconds which makes it a useless bike computer. Need to turn the crown to revive the display.
Yeah reached out to suunto support on this as option for always on on display was in my peak 5. They just claim been working on it but no specific data ..

Thank you for the great Video! I am searching for my first sportwatch and the available options are overwhellming. I think i brought it down now to two watches. The Pace 3 and the Suunto Race S. It would be great to hear your thoughts and suggestions about that. Thank you and have a great Day!
Major kudos to Suunto for making (some) of these in Finland! I really want to give this watch a shot - but not having built-in music storage is a major negative. It's never coming?
Awesome video, great explanation-thanks for that! Still, as a triathlete and trail runner, I'm stuck between the Coros Pace 3 and the Suunto Race S. I'm not too interested in all those extra 'fancy' features, but I'm a sucker for GPS and HRM accuracy. Also, AMOLED and a watch that's not the size of a small dinner plate are a plus. What would be your pick?
Actually, I have tested both and I kept the Suunto. Pace 3 is just a bit too small for me and the Race S is just a tad bigger. All I really want is accuracy in GPS and HR (like you), and don't bother with the algorithms. But what really draw me to the Suunto (and at first the Vertical) was when I read their Sustainability reports. Just google "Sustainability report Suunto" and I was surprised on how much attention they put into this. They should communicate more about this I believe. But I am more of an outdoor/nature person than a pure sports person, so maybe that's more of a focus for me. I've really had it with "white tissues" lying around in the woods.

Now igot wait for a update to correct this. Dang Ray i had i hopes for this watch after watching this video. Now im wondering is Des getting the same hr data😢
There is a feature in Garmin, when you pause workout, you can choose 'resume later' and watch goes back to normal mode, without gps etc. Is there something similar in this?

I've been searching everywhere for one and was hoping Ray will have it. I was supposed to pick up a Garmin Mk2s this week and deferred my plans while I consider the Suunto Ocean, but the lack of reviews (and shops with display units) so far have been frustrating.
@@suntzuthesecond It appears Ray had one to review and literally lost it in the ocean so he said the review is coming, just delayed. Probably waiting to get a replacement from Suunto. Really interested to see if they improved on the lag like they seem to have done with the Race S.
@@davidcampos5878 Yes. Technically, I didn't lose it in the ocean. UPS did. Somewhere between Finland and the Greek Islands I was in, it went missing with a message that it was a "remote service area". It hasn't been seen in a week.
@@davidcampos5878 I came across a 'first impressions' video in Spanish showing the Suunto Ocean and Suunto Race scrolling, side-by-side. It makes the Ocean look very compelling and seems to be everything the Race should have been launched with, but I'm still looking for an honest review - or trying it out myself - before I'm convinced.
@@Dcrainmaker That's unfortunate but I appreciate the explanation. Hope it gets sorted out soon! @davidcampos5878 To answer your question, I came across a Spanish-language 'first impressions' video that compared scrolling the Suunto Race and Suunto Ocean side-by-side. It looks like they've finally fixed it, but I'm waiting to see it for myself (or hear it from an honest review) before I can be convinced.
Are you saying that I'll be changing my RACE next year because they'll come out with RACE 2 with better sensors. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! But I use an HR Belt so, not that too bad
I noticed that the Free Diving is limited to 10M based on the specifications listed on Suunto's website. That works out to be 1ATM, is that correct? Considering the size and construction of the watch that is extremely low. I was wondering if it was a typo.
It is correct and is actually intended for snorkeling and mermaiding, not freediving. If you are interested in freediving (hello fellow freediver!) and want something from Suunto, you should be looking into the new Suunto Ocean (a do-it-all like the Garmin Descent range) or a more traditional dive computer like the Zoop Novo, D4f, or D5. From what I understand, the dive computers (including the Suunto Ocean) have a dedicated depth sensor, whereas the sports trackers are just getting creative with it's barometric altimeter to measure water pressure in addition to air pressure. For clarity, the 10m limit is just for the depth readings from the sports trackers' altimeters. The watch cases themselves are water resistant to 50m or 100m depending on the model (but not dive rated of course).
If they update the Vertical with the new HR sensor (maybe called Vertical Pro?) I'll upgrade from my Suunto 9. HR accuracy is the deal breaker for the existing Vertical...
Hey Ray, one of my pet peeves with Suunto is that it does not (used to at least) tell me the number of intervals remaining when I am doing a structured workout. Has this changed/improved?
I have a question about the race S or any Suunto in general. Does it have an option to track hr at a specific time? Like a Polar for example, i specify to track in the evening when im close to sleep, to save battery life, and generally i dont really need daytime hr anyway. thx
Just received my Race S and the watch is stuck in debug mode, with a white screen showing crosshairs. You can cycle between testing the hardware, including calibration of the crown, but the watch will not load the main operating system. Tried to do a hard reset using the Suuntolink app on desktop but the watch isn't recognized. I looks like Suunto is shipping at least some of the initial release without being fully baked.
Oh...I've been trying. Suunto's been trying. Sadly, UPS has very much not been trying. Two weeks trying to get a watch somewhere where I was diving...only to have it arrive after I left. Sigh. Figuring out my next plans.
I'm using FR55, just a casual runner. Planning to get this. Should i go for it or go for FR265? Training mostly based on HR. And dont have any chest trap atm.
Yup, no problem! Just remember to toggle the option within the Whoop app (and sometimes, it'll untoggle itself after a few weeks or a firmware update, so just FYI on that).

Thanks for sharing
Are you going to review the Suunto Ocean?
Suunto Race S titanium or Coros Pace Pro? Maps and navigation, battery, Ecosystem and app...
Same question I’m asking haha
Titanium Race S is amazing. Wearing it now on my little wrist. Super comfortable.
When’s the Garmin Instinct 3 coming. I need to know haha 😂😂
I can't wait as well! It must be very soon, seeing the massive discounts on Instinct 2 lately.
That's what I'm waiting for as well
Can you turn off wrist gesture to wake the screen and just turn it on with "touch to wake"?
Are you saying that I'll be changing my RACE next year because they'll come out with RACE 2 with better sensors. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! But I use an HR Belt so, not that too bad
Is it possible to set the barometer with the desired pressure value? Or can you just correct the altitude value?
Y’aura il une version sapphire titanium? Quel dommage que ce ne soit pas au lancement
@@suntzuthesecond Thank you for the clarification! I didn't even realize that it measured depth at all, that's a nice feature.
Can't find if this feature is on the new generation op Suunto watches (race and vertical).. is it possible to broadcast the heart rate?
Cheers
sadly not. :(
@@Dcrainmaker that a shame. For me the reason not to buy this watch at the moment. Every other box is ticked.
$300 used Garmin Epix 2 standard or Suunto race s $349. I primarily run/hike. Which do you think would be better for my circumstances?
EPIX 2, where on earth so cheap? EBAY USA?
Is the climb guidance is also available for regular Race model? It seems different than before.
If they update the Vertical with the new HR sensor (maybe called Vertical Pro?) I'll upgrade from my Suunto 9. HR accuracy is the deal breaker for the existing Vertical...
Thanks for your review. How is the HR accuracy for Weight Training?
I am considering Race S to replace my Garmin Venu 2 plus. Thoughts?
well done Suunto
We need Vertical 2 💪
Does it measure depth underwater for free diving
I looks like Suunto is shipping at least some of the initial release without being fully baked.
so will the bigger Race be getting a upgrade soon?
It seems the barometric hole is located on the back and that's normally problematic. Can you confirm?
When will it be available?
When you will try to test Suunto Ocean ?
Oh...I've been trying. Suunto's been trying. Sadly, UPS has very much not been trying. Two weeks trying to get a watch somewhere where I was diving...only to have it arrive after I left. Sigh. Figuring out my next plans.
I'm using FR55, just a casual runner. Planning to get this. Should i go for it or go for FR265? Training mostly based on HR. And dont have any chest trap atm.
What did you get at the end
@ i bought Suunto race S. as the watch look more casual rather than the running watch. Display was top tier and functionality wise fit my needs.
@@muhammadhalim6115 looks good I agree, how’s the HR monitor on the watch?
Is there a titanium version?
Should be later this year 💪
Can you download music from a treading service and connect headphones? Cannot find that info on the Suunto website.
Hot water does that to my RACE too, it's funny to watch a ghotst play with your watch. LOL
Great watch! I’m still picking up my Coros pace 3 over this everyday.
Can this watch connect to a Whoop for HR broadcasting?
Yup, no problem! Just remember to toggle the option within the Whoop app (and sometimes, it'll untoggle itself after a few weeks or a firmware update, so just FYI on that).
