  • Kevin Burke gave another intimate performance at An Beal Bocht, the Bronx, NYC on April 12, 2012. He paid tribute to the great fiddler Paddy Killoran (1904 Sligo -1965 Bronx NYC) with 3 reels: Down the Broom/ The Gatehouse Maid/ Mulvihill's. Back-up guitar by NYC's Eamon O'Leary. Nice intro by Kevin about visiting the Bronx cemetery where Killoran is buried.
Killoran's name in Irish was Paidí Mac Giolla Luaighrinn. He was one of the first recording artists of Irish trad music, specifically Sligo fiddle, along with James Morrison and Michael Coleman, who's reputations are better known. Kevin Burke is considered a direct stylistic descendant of this trio, though his influences are broad, including the great American blues guitarist and singer Robert Johnson. The soul of Kevin's music has no distinct county, country or even instrument.
Note that this performance is acoustic as all trad music should be, ideally. No mics, no amps, no speakers. The difference is clear even via the internet, don't you think?

My father was very good friends with Mr. Killoran. He came to our home in the early 1960's for sessions that my father held.

Wow. Must have been mighty sessions. What do you remember about them? Did you happen to make any recordings? :)

I just can't get enough of these videos! I've listened to/watched some of his stuff from the 80s, 90s etc. and I have to say I actually prefer where his playing has got to nowadays! CANNOT wait to see him perform with Celtic Fiddle Festival on June 3rd!!

My father Joseph Patrick Heeran and Willian Judd started the Irish Music Association in New Haven, Connecticut back in the 1950’s.
My father was good friends with Mr. Killioran.
