I think gentle cleanser with niacinamide will be good , I am saying it because I used adapalene gel ( it is stronger than retinol) and used salicylic face wash , it made by face red and very dry

I've tried numerous facewashes, but none worked as well as little extra riceberry face wash. It's made with black-rice and white mulberry, and brightens and gives immediate glow to my skin.
