  • Fancy Colored Diamonds EXPLAINED: Why Are Diamonds Colored and What Gives Diamonds Their Color? // The three main causes of colored diamonds are: the presence of impurities in the diamond crystal structure, the presence of lattice defects in the diamond structure, and the radiation coming from radioactive minerals that are present in the vicinity of where some of the diamonds were formed. Impurities in the diamond crystal structure are the cause for fancy yellow, orange, blue, violet, white and black diamonds. Lattice defects in the diamond structure lead to the fancy pink and fancy red diamonds, as well as the brown diamonds and purple diamonds. Radiation leads to the formation of fancy green diamonds.

About me: My name is Maria Baias and I’m a scientist turned Sci-Fi/Fantasy writer. While teaching a university course on Inorganic Chemistry, I became fascinated by minerals and rocks and the role they play in shaping interesting geological formations. That, combined with my research background in Heritage Science are what led to my interests in using science to explore and understand the wonders of our planet. I’m happy to share those stories with the rest of the world through this channel and my blog: www.mariabaias.com/blog

I'd like to make note here on the black diamond part. What you explain and from what I've learned with the pyrite or hematite combinations is that these are often softer like moissanites. I have one big one off those as a lose gem, but in my signet ring I have a 1.12ct black diamond which, when the light enters it right. It colors deep blue with a split insusion on the crown where it turns deeper green. So a combination of deep dark blue (Allmost black sapphire) and deep dark green (allmost like moldavite on a big chunck where light does not enter so appearing black/Deep dark green jadeite.) Combination

Excellent! How does the Macrae et al (2020) paper apply to this? Which experimental apparatus do you use to see the diamond crystallography? Please, elaborate!

hi maria , great job , thank you , i learned a lot in your good video, ofcourse peoples use always to say the rarest diamond is red ! ,,, but i belive the real rarest one is number 5 is pink , number 4 the blue , number 3 the red , number 2 the orange , and finaly number one the rarest of all is the violet ,,,, i diden,t talk about the most expensive the most precious , but just the most rare in nature ! ,,, the most expensive is blue , and the most rare is violet ,,, and i rally want you to talk the caracterestics of rough diamond ,,, THANK YOU !!!
