    The Perveen Mystry’s mysteries are my favorite! I also enjoyed Death by Dumpling which is the first one in a cozy mystery series that has to do with Chinese food (and it always make me so hungry!).

      Oooh, that series sounds wonderful, I'll have to add it to my TBR :D

    Oooh, do you know the Flavia Deluce Books by Allen Bradley!? The first one is called The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. They’re about a precocious eleven year old chemist set in England in the 1950s and are funny, clever, and touching with good character development. I wish I hadn’t already read them all.

    A.C. is my favorite author. I also love Kerry Fisher's books as well as Death in paradise. Both books and tv show. I love cozies period.😀

    I'm excited to read some of those. I really love the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley it has a young 10-year-old girl who lives with a quirky family in a mansion after WWII. She uses her love of chemistry and the ability to get into mischief to solve mysteries.

    This was just the video I was looking for! I’ve been in the mood for cosy mysteries the last couple months. Josephine Tey is my favourite cosy mystery author and I’ve almost finished all her books, so needed some new recommendations. My favourite of her are The Franchise Affair, To Love and Be Wise, and The Daughter of Time.

    • @TheBookCastle
      @TheBookCastle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yay, I'm so glad you found it! :D I've never heard of Tey, I'll have to add some of those books to my TBR :D

    Thank you so much. The Montabano series and the Mistry series are next on my list of reads.
    If you liked the Montabano series, you'll probably also like Iain Pears's Jonathan Argyle Art History Mystery series. This series is from the 1990s & it is still one of my favorites. A true classic.

    I love cozies, thank you for the wonderful suggestions, Alice! 😘 I love that they’re series, especially when the real pleasure (for me, at least) are the community and recurring characters - that’s what keeps drawing me back.
    Here are a few series I’ve liked:
    -Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffith (I love Ruth! I want to be her friend!)
    -DS Harbinder Kaur series by Elly Griffith (? Originally I thought the first was to be a stand alone, but it seems there’s now a second, whoo hoo!)
    -Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspeare
    -Rei Shimura series by Sujata Massey
    -Dead End job mysteries by Elaine Viets
    -Periodic Table mysteries by Camille Minichino
    -Amelia Peabody by Elizabeth Peters (I’ve only read a couple, but it’s a series I’ve been meaning to get back to)
    -Nell Sweeney mysteries by PB Ryan
    -Penelope Kite series by Serena Kent
    -Agatha Raisin by MC Beaton (Though later ones in the series are pretty formulaic)
    -Bryant & May by Christopher Fowler
    -Mira James series by Jess Lourey
    -Maine Clambake series by Barbara Ross
    -Marcus Didius Falco series by Lindsey Davis (set in Ancient Rome - another one I’ve not read much of, but want to get back to)
    -Anthony Horowitz’s adult mysteries (maybe not cozy-cozy, but I really like them.)
    Thanks to your recommendation, I started the Death in Paradise series, which I really enjoyed!

    Cosy mysteries are my Happy Place 😊 so ♥️ hearing you talk about them. You introduced me to the Fabulous Phryne, Alice 😃
    Rebecca Tope's 'Cotswolds' series revolve around a house-sitter who stumbles on trouble wherever she stays. Short, easy reads, very good depictions of Cotswold villages!

    I started the Fisher ones after you recc’d them a while back and thank you for that as I have really enjoyed them. I haven’t tried Massey’s books set in India but i loved her series set mainly in Japan, about Japanese America Rei Shimura - the Salaryman’s Wife is the first. If you like Christie, try the wonderful Campion books by Margery Allingham, and Ngaio Marsh’s Inspector Alleyn mysteries. If you haven’t tried any of these, do - I hope you like them!

    I'd recommend the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. I'm not sure it would particularly be called 'cosy' but you do follow Maisie throughout the series - 15 so far - really good. Another series I have never heard mentioned on booktube is the Sheila Malory series by Hazel Holt - cosy and set in the West Country of England. Well worth a read!

    I have all of Agatha Christie's books. She was the best mystery writer ever.

  • @potatoesofdefiance
    @potatoesofdefiance 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    TV adaptation of Phryne Fisher series was BRILLIANT! It also (in some way) brought back the desire to reconnect with James Hadley Chase books (even for their cheesy covers, one cannot ignore the brilliance of his writing, even if some under-appreciating reviews tend to dismiss them as pulp fiction), my favorite go-to lot among mystery/thrillers. :-)
    Have tried reading Agatha Christie many times (and even enjoyed few to some extent)...but, personally, prefer a Sherlock Holmes book to Miss Marple or M. Poirot any day.
    Few that I am looking forward to reading (in addition to Mitford Murders, which has been BIG on my list since your reviews): Secret, Book & Scone Society series by Ellery Adams (again, one of your many fine picks); The Booktown Mystery series by Lorna Barrett; Thursday Next series (read The Eyre Affair recently...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) by Jasper Fforde; Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny; The Singaporean Mystery Series by Ovidia Yu; The Flavia De Luce Series by Alan Bradley; Harbinder Kaur series by Elly Griffiths; Agatha Raisin series by MC Beaton.
    Also, wonder if you have come across Alex Rider novels (YA)... Read a few and enjoyed each one of them. :-) Oh, and if you read and loved The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, I'm sure The Devil and the Dark Water is already on your list (another one I am very much looking forward to reading before year ends).
    One more bunch that may or may not match your reading style, is a story arc of the comic fantasy series Discworld: The City Watch books (I'd steer clear of the upcoming TV series, which claims to be loosely based on / 'inspired' by the series, but misses the mark of capturing the spirit of Sir Terry's BRILLIANT writing even in the slightest by miles) by Sir Terry Pratchett, which make not only fun, but (in more ways than one) often, thought-provoking reads. Though not strictly mystery/thriller, the arc follows the exploits of The City Watch of the fictional city of Ankh-Morpork in fantastical land of Discworld and each one has a plot with strong essence of a good mystery as the core demon that drives the story. Best read in order, the arc starts with Guards! Guards!, followed by Men At Arms; Feet of Clay; Jingo; The Fifth Elephant; Night Watch; Thud! (exclamation mark included and intended); Snuff. :-)

    • @TheBookCastle
      @TheBookCastle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, the adaptation was so good! :D I haven't read any of the Alex Rider books, but yes I'm really exicted for the new book by Stuart Turton! :D Thank you so much for all the recommendations!

      I love both Christie and conan doyle, also flavia from your list but agatha raisin not so much, Beaton's Hamish Macbeth was better. Chase is a great favourite with my parents but somehow I never got down to reading too many, just Tiger by the Tail and Miss Shumway so far.
      Interesting that you mentioned the Citywatch books, I love those (have read upto feet of clay so far) and they do have mysteries, you're right, but somehow the mind doesn't go to them when thinking of cosies. Glad you mentioned them.

    • @potatoesofdefiance
      @potatoesofdefiance 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mallikaramachandran2744 : Thanks for the recommendation. Haven't read any of Hamish Macbeth, but will definitely look for it.
      Started reading Chase back in high school (about the time most people get introduced to him I guess). :-D Am still a fan. The memorable ones for me, as far as Chase is concerned, are Blandish books; Don Micklem books; Trusted Like The Fox; But A Short Time To Live; The Things Men Do; You Find 'em, I'll Fix 'em; My Laugh Comes Last; We'll Share A Double Funeral; Hit Them Where It Hurts; You're Dead Without Money; Knock, Knock! Who's There?; The Joker in the Pack; The Whiff of Money; The Way The Cookie Crumbles; Well Now - My Pretty; I Would Rather Stay Poor; An Ace Up My Sleeve; Do Me a Favour, Drop Dead; The Vulture Is A Patient Bird; The Guilty Are Afraid; There's Always A Price Tag; I'll Bury My Dead; Lay Her Among the Lillies; The Dead Stay Dumb...actually, almost all his books I read (and I read almost all of them) through what I call my Chase Phase. :-D
      You're spot on! City Watch books aren't cozy mysteries. But they do have commendable mystery/thriller element to them (and Commander Vimes and his squad never disappoint). :-)

    • @mallikaramachandran2744
      @mallikaramachandran2744 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@potatoesofdefiance Thanks for the list. I'm fairly sure my parents have them all so I will raid that set and pick out some. Don Micklem I have been planning to read since my mom has told me to try them as well--Mission to Sienna was one I remember. She also likes the Mark Girland ones. Of the others, I guess I will try some more eventually as well--not sure why I didn't since I read most of the Erle Stanley Gardners we had and much later also the Dick Francis (other than the Sid Halley ones which are a touch too violent for my liking).

    Hi Alice, i saw a few videos of you by now and i really think that you could like the Dr. Siri Paiboun series from colin cotteril (the first book is called "the coroner's lunch"). I simply love these books, they are bizzare and comic in the most positive way and i enjoyed reading them so much. Cozy funny mysteries set in the late 70s in Laos where 72year old Dr. Siri is the only coroner in the country.

    A cozy mystery series that I have liked ok is called Mrs. Jefferies series by Emily Brightwell. It's set in Victorian England and Mrs. Jefferies is a housekeeper, who works for a police inspector and she helps him solve his murder cases, with the help of the rest of the staff without his knowledge. It's cheesy and predictable in parts, but it has likable characters, and they're short quick books that are cozy fun.
