What's cool about Utrecht is how crazy old it is. The domtoren was actually a renovation started in 1254 because the previous one burned down. And that previous one was already a renovation because the one before, built in 1017, burned down. The origins of this site go back all the way to Roman times, when it was a fort called Traiectum, originally built in the year 47. Some of the other buildings in Utrecht are insanely old as well, like the houses of Oudaen at Oudegracht 99 and Drakenburg at Oudegracht 114, which are built in the 1200s I believe.
The Dom tower has been covered in scaffolding for so long now that it might take us some getting used to when they are ever removed. I think there may be school children in Utrecht who have never in their lives seen it without. But, it is all for a good cause. And hey, building it, centuries ago, took several generations, so who am I to complain ;-)

Great clog! Couple of suggestions; - in Utrecht Asian style all you can eat Umami is great. - if you like really good but very expensive tepenyaki; try the one in the okra hotel in amsterdam. Do get a second mortgage ;). - get a museum jaar, aart if you have not already! Free entry to most museum in the country. - the botanical gardens in Utrecht are beautiful, also ‘under the dom’ is a great museum and you can climb the dom tower off course.
Another great vlog :) You chose a good day for the museum, everytime I go it is packed with people. The Spoorwegmuseum is a great place and the train collection is really impressive. The rollercoasters are for everyone, and yes, you can fit if you are an adult. Now it is time for me to recognize all places you filmed, because I live here :)
I knew you'd like Utrecht! It's amazing in the summer to sit on a terrace and have a drink. For Japanese food, Hotel Okura in Amsterdam is a solid choice.
Utrecht definitely is one of my favorite places to go. Had to go there often for personal reasons and always loved just walking through the city center
Thank you for your wonderful videos showing your exploration of the Netherlands! In 's-Hertogenbosch is an amazing little Japanese restaurant called "Shiro" (しろ) especially when you want to eat more authentic Japanese dishes that are not sushi or ramen. It's not cheap but we ate there for several special occassions and it's totally worth it. And in Den Haag we enjoy visiting SET, that has a very diverse and delicious Japanese menu.
Since you live here now you might considerng revisiting Utrecht. There is so much more to this city which you did not see. Anyway it it is nice to city the Netherlands throught foreign eyes and get better perspective.
Getting your meal fresh at Sonmat is the best. When ordering online is a bit of hit or miss though. It probably depends on how long it sat out and how much time the biker takes. But I love we can get some authentic Korean food here! :) And Spoorwegmuseum is awesome!
you guys should visit the blossompark in amsterdam in march/april its so so pretty filled with cherryblossom trees they only bloom for like 2 to 3 weeks
Okay, so about the OV chip card. They just keep buying the previous versions of the system that’s used in London. They even bought the first version which had many known bugs (which were already fixed in London). Over there paying with you bank pass was already possible years ago, here, they just recently introduced it.
Maybe for the next time: Rietveld-Schröder huis and DomUnder (with remains of the first parts of Utrecht). The Romans started this city in +/- 70 AD at what is now called the Dom Square.
Amstelveen, which is basically the south part of the city of Amsterdam, has a very large Japanese community. So it also hosts some great quality Japanese restaurants where you can eat food the way the Japanese do. From Amstelveen, you can take a bus (300?) to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel which you can check out and to Amsterdam Zuid-Oost where I can recommend the food stalls at the multi-cultural permanent market. From there a metro train back to Amsterdam Central or Amsterdam Zuid station. As a "Brabander" that lived in Amstelveen for a long time, I was always amazed at the depth of the Amstelveen polder compared tot the Amstel river water level. You can see that very clearly if you follow the Amstel south from the Portugese Jewish cemetery (Beth Haim) and the Sint Urbanus kerk in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel...
Ramen Brothers in Utrecht has some very nice Japanese food. They are in the city center but outside of the busy areas, away from where tourists will come. It's a small nice inexpensive restaurant with good food.
Maybe you like to know that Utrecht is an old city like Nijmegen. Founded by the Romans in 50 AC. The Latin name of the Romans was Ultra trajectum (meaning end of the road). During the centuries this changed from Ultraiactem to Utrecht.
I commute 2 to 3 times a week from Leeuwarden to Utrecht for work. And Whenever I have some spare time I try to stroll around in the city. Its a really great place to be
Not so difficult, try EN in Amsterdam for Japanese food! Okura is nice, but I think you will like the cosy atmosphere of EN and their food is traditional
Even though its not in the Netherlands i would recommend the Little Tokyo district in Dusseldorf for japanese food, its right next to the trainstation and its packed with very good japanese restaurants.
I once ate at restaurant Yamazato in Amsterdam, where the waitresses where kimonos. Very good, but also very expensive. I think it’s the only Japanese restaurant in the Netherlands with a Michelin star.
I'd figured you'd like Utrecht, its a student city and really expat friendly, Modern and quite international which I guess is because of the students which are more open minded than your average dutchie.
