  • In this episode, Michelle and Alex explore the historic, picturesque, and delicious city of Amersfoort, in the Netherlands. In addition to seeing the sights (including the famous Koppelpoort), they look for unique Amersfoort treats (like a chocolate with a design from famous artist Piet Mondrian), and wrap things up with a dinner of Dutch snacks made from locally sourced ingredients.
If you're visiting the Netherlands, definitely consider spending one day in Amersfoort, as it's a very easy day trip from Amsterdam (or really anywhere in the Netherlands).

The Amersfoortse kei is not a little cobble stone but a huge 7000 kilo bolder that was placed in the centre of Amersfoort which gave the Amersfoorters the nickname Kreientrekkers, which means bolder pullers. It took 400 people to pull the thing into the city on a dare somewhere in the 17th century.

A dare which Everart Meyster and some other nobleguy had made. It was pulled from De Stompert (near Soesterberg) all the way to the city center!

Wow, Amersfoort is so beautiful! I visited it once quickly, but I now realise I didn't see that much of it.
I think you will enjoy visiting Doesburg too. It's a cute 'Hanze' city and is very pictureresque.

  • @AnnekeOosterink

I can highly recommend the Hanzesteden (hanseatic league). A collection of cities that used to be part of a trade route and trade agreements between cities all over Northern Europe. It started in Germany, and most of the cities were German, but there were many other cities and countries involved as well. The ones I know are lovely are Zutphen and Deventer, I live near Doesburg, which is also one. If I remember correctly, there is a tour between a few cities that starts with a steam engine, then a boat tour and finally a regular train back to where you started. I have done that with my parents at least once.
And while the Veluwe and Veluwezoom aren't cities, they're still great to visit. :)

    • @Benny_000
      @Benny_000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes I just wanted to say this! I especially love Zutphen since there are basically no modern buildings in the city center and you can become fully immersed in the 16th century architecture.
I also visited Doesburg and the only thing I didn't like is that there were too many cars parked in the old streets.

I was born in Amersfoort, went to live in Maastricht for more than 20 years, and now I’m back. I don’t think I can choose which one I loved more. Both magnificent cities. The thing I missed most when living in Maastricht was the water in the neighborhood and the jackdaws.
When I was back I missed the dialect, Mestreechs, carnaval, the river, and Maria. I’m not Catholic but in the Maria chapels you experience the mystery, and feel a kind of peace.

Your videos are getting better and better :) Amersfoort is a great city. I live in Utrecht and used to work in Amersfoort, so I recognize a lot of things in the video. The "Nieuwe Stad" reminds me of Katendrecht in Rotterdam: that is also an industrial area that has been transformed in a very nice place to live and go out. If I could not live in Utrecht, then Amersfoort would be a great second choice.

How nice that you have also been to Amersfoort. But you know, the Netherlands has so many nice cities and villages, it is almost impossible to visit them all. But you are doing your best! And I, Amsterdammer, am very happy that you promote other places. My city, where I really avoid the center, has become one big outdoor amusement park. Tourists, tourists and more tourists. And now I live outside the city and now I am surrounded by poorly cycling tourists who visit the bulb fields.....aaaaargh.......

Speaking of medieval castles, if you love visiting them i suggest that when you're ever in Limburg again i suggest checking out Hoensbroek and Valkenburg. Hoensbroek castle got named best castle in the Netherlands and just a stones throw away from Hoensbroek you have the old castle ruins of Valkenburg which has a lot of history (it got blown to pieces in the Franco Dutch war in 1672) and the center of Valkenburg is very nice and cozy.

Are Deventer and Enkhuizen on the list of cities to visit? Those popped up in my head just now. Like Amersfoort they have some really nice old buildings and architecture.

Amersfoort is also a town on Staten Island. From the time that New York was New Amsterdam. (Staten Island) In 1664 the British took over and it became New York. As a tip, read the book: Island in the Center of the World. It tells the history of the Dutch until the overtake by the English.
Its part of the American history (National Treasure)
Amersfoort is also known as “Kei-Stad” Its symbol is a bolder from the last ice age, which towed into the city by the towns people and had a prominent place in the park near Monnikkendam.

It is nice to see that you folks take the time to visit more places in the Netherlands. May I suggest that you take some more time and visit the northern island like Terschelling. You will be in for a treat after a ferry trip of almost 2 hours across the shallow sea. Furthermore Leeuwarden city center the capital of the province of Friesland is beautiful. Once you have done that take a trip to the province of Limburg. Especially the south with their capital Maastricht is great. Once in Maastricht especially when the weather is fine there is a very special vibe. You will not feel like your in the Netherlands but rather in a kind of nice nomansland with the borders of Belgium and Germany just a few steps away.
But yes these trips do take more time.

So cool that you were in my hometown! Love that you loved it 🙂 If you ever come back for a visit I would recomment coming to Kattenbroek (Catspants) It's a neigbourhood in Amersfoort (with own trainstation when using public transport). This neigbourhood is designed by some of the weirdest architects and have pretty funny houses and street art. That's why it's even miniaturized in madurodam and in Japan. Just some advice for when you 2 want to come back to Amersfoort. Love your channel! Keep it up!

Amersfoort is my favourite destination for a bike trip from Utrecht. And there is something weird with it, too, I think, because the province Utrecht really is a province in two parts: the Western part is essentially Randstad, most people there won't even really object to being called a "Hollander". But the eastern part is different: much more rural (much more religious, too), and definitely not Randstad. And Amersfoort sits exactly on the divide between "the two Utrechts".
In the 17th century, the cities of Utrecht and Amersfoort were rivals, and competitors for trade. When there were plans to dig a new canal as part of an improved Water Line defense, Utrecht vetoed this, because they were afraid of Amersfoort getting a better connection to the Zuyderzee than Utrecht had. The result was that when Louis XIV attacked the Netherlands in 1672, he could march straight to Utrecht and basically sack the city, before he was stopped at the Water Line that was now not in front of, but behind Utrecht. City was bankrupted because of it (and suffered major damage in a storm, two years later. Without any money- or support from any other part of the country, recovery from that took until 1850. There's probably a lesson there about short term and long term vision ;-) )

That's my city! Well, I don't live their now, but that's where I'm from. I can tell you were there on a friday, because of the flower market by the tower. You missed a few bits, or at least, they didn't make it into the video. There's plenty more to see. The Kamperbinnenpoort, 't Hof market square, de st. Joriskerk (saint George's church), de Appelmarkt, huis Cohen with the blue windows (in the background of your huis Tinnenburg shot), Flehite museum (also seen in the background).

My apologies to the suriname restaurant owners. I was rude an ignorant and I completely forgot to apologize. Also I forgot if you already had a Pom Sandwich. Some suriname resaurants actually give you a small lasagne tray of the stuff. My mom used to eat that with some dutch white bread. Pom needs to be slightly orange, not potato based and in my mom's case not spicy. take the spicy one anyway :3

I only knew Amersfoort from driving through it by train. I have never visited the city. I think I will sometime.
I can strongly recommend Groningen. A beautifull city, I probebly think so because I was born there.
Look at the central hall at the train station, especialy the ceiling.
And visit some of the "hofjes". Housing areas for the poor, sick and widows. If you don't know wat to look for, you walk by them without notice them.
    And try the "Groninger koek".

Think European & you'll see that Maastricht(& all those lovely little towns & villages near there, ride 't miljoenenlijntje) is close to Gemany(Köln, Ruhr), Belgium(Luik, Hasselt) & just a little bit further you've got France(Elzas with Straatsburg!) & Luxemburg!
