He seems to be removing spirits possessing people it seems. The Axe Ghost, I mean. Even if it's to make himself stronger, it likely still has a positive effect on the humans he removes such spirits from.
That axe man is actually the best spirit, he might look evil and acts like one. But hes actually the only one who hunting and stopping other devil from hurting ppl
I think a big part of the appeal for this story is that the netherworld seems to have this unknowable social structure all its own, some of the spirits have jobs to do, others are just pure malice. Because nothing is really explained, you're left to draw your own conclusions. That's refreshing and it really keeps you on your toes as a reader, you don't know what's going to happen next.

@@skye387 people that die contempt with their lives keep their form. they become pure spirits who are fully aware of their circumstances but dont cross over. the father fully accepts that his time came and he does so without regret. he just doesnt cross over because he chooses to stay and watch over the family (pure spirits without regret have a silver/goldish aura to them). people who die without closure and are full of remorse become manifestations of their malice and grow more grotesque as their power increases. some will appear to be "normal" when infact they are using their power to transform themselves to deceive those who can see them (like the little boy). because in order for spirits to harm humans, it has to be 100% indisputable that human can see them.
One of my favorite things about this anime is how it consistently uses horror tropes while still staying completely in the slice of life genre, because theres something so weirdly charming about these monstrous looking ghosts actually being harmless or even helpful to normal people

Just like among us, you’re tired of seeing things that look like one which drives you crazy. One of them is the imposter who will try and kill you. Always wonder what the background on the Axeman was. Was it just that particular train car he haunted? Or was it the ENTIRE subway line itself? Was he a wandering spirit, with no anchor to keep him in place like some of the others have? Did he actually come from someone having died, or did he just...coalesce from a bunch of negative energy? His interest in the living only seems to extend to those who might be harboring hidden dead spirits like the one he hacked out of that woman; he doesn't care for the people but just pulling the bad spirit out for his bag.
In this show we see several examples of Ghosts who seems to have roles or jobs of some kind in the afterlife. He could be collecting the souls possessing humans because its his job, or it could be souls that possess humans are his favorite snack. Either way despite his disgusting appearance he seems to be doing something that has a net positive effect on the living.
When I first saw this episode, I thought that the woman on the subway was dead, and he came to reap her soul. We never did see that woman wake up, so I am not sure what happened exactly...
I always figured he was a serial killer who found a new kind of prey after he had died, Like he probably did go around randomly attacking people in the subway when he was alive but probably got killed . Woke up as a ghost and figured he still can kill just not the victims he wanted anymore so Ghosts where his next best option.

The only reason I powered through the fanservice in the anime was because I knew the story was too good to miss out. Thankfully they reduced the amount of fan service after a few episodes. I'm glad I watched it, or I'd never have seen the pregnant teacher scen(it wasn't in the manga).

Miko is the unlucky one, since she has no psychic powers whatsoever, but can see even the scariest, most powerful entities clearly.

Alot of the stronger spirits hunt down smaller spirits to get stronger. This guy isn't necessarily good he just has a method of getting stronger
