There is nothing wrong with going "soft", Andrew. We've earned it. Ideally I'm in a vehicle with cab to bunk access unencumbered.

I share your ambiguity about the new build and even share some of the same reasons. I admire it and I think it is going to be in a different postal code re ease of use and advanced capabilities. And I certainly admire your ingenuity and vision. Oh Andrew, but I do lament the degeneration of this wonderful thing we do, i.e. going to the bush, and turning into such a huge industry. Obviously we approach this from different points of departure. This is your industry, your business, your method of income. Me, it is so necessary to keep it simple, and go to the bush just like I did thirty years ago. For example, I LOVE your spade and everything it represents. And now you're taking a frikken toaster on safari! I remember DVD's of you and John years ago in the Kalahari, with slices of bread on a Kalahari Joe, making toast over a fire! I will forever prefer that picture and association. Andrew is this industry going in the right direction? Is it not going to turn on- and devour itself? I mean, I have capitulated and have 350w solar panel with Victron electronics that runs my 85L Snomaster every day 24/7 without me even thinking about it. Jeepers but I have serious misgivings about turning this (almost) sacred privilege of going to the bush, into a high tech, yuppie, penis display. Please forgive me my rant, but I hate what this precious thing is becoming. I do think your new build is amazing and very interesting, so thank you as ever for taking me along with you. There is something calming about having everything you need to survive with you as you travel. Having your house on your back like a snail... cant explain why but seeing you finish the project, adding gadgets and tools makes me feel good.
One thing to help with your kettle and not burning through battery capacity - go to one of those bargain stores or good kitchenware stores and grab one of those air pots 😉 we use one camping and they’re bloody awesome !!! Boil up your water, fill up the air pot and bobs ya uncle - boiling hot water for a few hours and no need to rebuild until you empty it all.
Cost you about $30 and sooooo worth it 😉👍

Good quality none stick pans and silicone utensils, the only way to go. We are ahead of you there Andrew, glad you are catching up.

Good point about the cooking equipment and putting the same colour wrap on the camper will definitely make it smaller. As for Gwuen and the height issue a small portable scaffold would work, I see them in Bunnings every time I am there and dual purpose, step exercises while cooking dinner. Love to you both and thanks for a great show.
Hey Andrew, with regards to the Rode Wireless Go, I use it for all my productions too and have found that buying the additional Lavalier Go for it is well worth it and gives a much more consistent quality to the kit 👌🏻 it was an additional R1500 but I’ve never looked back 👍🏻
Nothing wrong with getting soft, I think of it as getting smart, non stick saves time, no one wants to wash up while camping, a friend of mine told me to carry baking paper with me and put it in the pan while frying, it works really well still cooks the same but protects the surface and then you just wipe the pan down after cooking, I've since told other people and now everyone does it I know, even at home in the frying pan, Love your shows.
I'm with you, Andrew. When out in the bush, simpler is better. I know electronics, I understand them, I have a DEGREE in electronics. However, I'm quite the analog person. I like to get back to nature whenever possible.

You are not going soft, you are enjoying your time. As you explained, you have experienced roughing it, its time to enjoy the outback with out the worry or the hard ache of simply cooking.
Agreeing with the Rhino Rack folding antenna mount, better finish, well built, actual T-handle release backed up by a wing nut bolt to secure in position. Antenna hole is open to the side to slide the cable in without disassembly.

Andrew, we both have the same electronic challenges. Not because we ignorant, but because due to our age we are both "digital immigrants" as opposed to being digital natives like our children are. We get it, it just isn't as natural to us. Btw, I LOVE my Rode Go. I find it best if you clip it into the placket of a button-down shirt. Worst case scenario, plug that Boya lav mic plugged into the Rode Goand stick into your pocket then, clip the lav your collar. I find it works great for me. Best regards from Texas!
Maybe soft, but definitely brittle. Please consider some kind of grab bar for entering and exiting the camper. We don't recover as quickly as we used too. Too many of my caravan friends have taken bad spills of much lower steps.
Once you have it - use it! We get in the habit of exiting with our hands full to save a trip, setting us up for a fall.
Totally agree with your comments about the tilting antenna mount, I found the same issues👍

Since I love the desert, most of my wanderings are done there.I make desert toast, just leave the bread out for a few minutes and all the moisture is dried out. Nice and crispy. Lol I understand wanting to be comfortable. After over 55 years of camping, I finally broke down and bought a refrigerator/freezer. What a game changer.

I use Rhino Rack folding UHF mounts which seem similar to the one you used but look a bit more friendly to fold.
Both Rhino Rack and GME make folding antenna mounts
These are likely a cheaper copy of the rhinos, had my rhino mount for years, great product really well made
The GME folding bracket is great.

MICROPHONE: Andrew, I have a PicoGear PICOMIC mic set. Really excellent kit. And has the added benefit of having dual channel mics meaning you can mic up two people for interviews and chats. Really excellent quality and smaller - and very well designed. Worth trying. I love mine.
Have a look at KE custom products for folding ariels, these are very well designed and can not be beaten. Made in a back shed in north central qld.
i am with you 100 percent with the toaster.I have a plan that involves an old old school flip sided toaster,but in the meantime toast is one of lifes little delacies
RE: camp kitchen items, I'd like to rebuild my collection to include more square items, rather than round. While cylinders hold more volume, they are miserable and inefficient to pack. I've even considered (but haven't committed) to square shaped frying pan and water kettle. I'd like to find 'straighter' spoons and spatulas. Angled components work fine in the home but make for difficult organization in a camping box.

I understand the problem with copying. However the reason overlanding works in the first place is that copying enables wide parts availability. And wide parts availability allows you to overland anywhere and everywhere knowing that parts and accessories are available.
For the maxtrax, stick powerful neodium magnets to their backsides. Now you can click them on to your vehicles side panels.

Just mounted my Matrix using a strap today...need to get custom plates made to use my mounts on the ARB flat rack :-S
I have the wireless go too. I'v never tried it with a lav plugged in. Since you have both, it might be worth trying.
Most of your transmit power will be towards the most metal. i.e. engine. For the best placement of your transmit antenna would be on the roof, middle front, not sides. If you cannot do that, just remember if you need to get the best TX distance is to point your right front corner towards the receiver. Also, Ground, Ground Ground. Bond the ground of the antenna mount to the frame. You will not believe just how better the radio will work. If one desires to go all the way, get one of those 12/18in thicker ground spikes that generators use.
(ex Canadian Army Radio Operator of many years)
I realise this is a big compromise. If this was a radio shack van, I'd put them in the perfect spot and build a second roof rack on the camper. But it's not. The compromises required to centre the antenna on the roof rack for best ground plain is just not worth it. I need the rack for other stuff. Since a ground spike is out of the question, will making a better ground connection to the rack improve things?

Just a thing that may save you from future trouble. The position of your 2 antennas is close to the housing of the camper and it will seriously affect their performance. Try to relocate them to a better place if possible.
I also use the wireless RODE mic and I am very happy about it.

Good idea buying a domestic toaster and a jug. You may want to stay overnight in a cabin. Or just great for a roadside smoko stop. Inverter microwave next?????? I mean Ive see some your mates (Tavel companions) have barista machines so I think go for it. You have gone to all the trouble for your power set up, might aswell use it. Good video!

Another issue with the rode wireless go is that is uses 2.4GHz. It is prone to interference from because the 2.4GHz band is crowded. Shouldn't be a problem when your on a trip though.

Andrew. You should use something called a “ball locking pin” for the stairs. Maybe a more elegant solution for locking the steps.

Andrew, I just had a thought while you were driving. You may experience glare off the electrical panel in the back seat onto your dash camera (I assume it has a lexan or simulate clear cover). Maybe consider an anti-glare screen protector so you can still visualize the internals.
