We think alike, before I read yours I going to say we need two since they are so cheap, the last and only choice I had for a inline carbon seatpost cost me $230. I couldn't believe it.
Sorry to hear about the seat post issue - that's a whole new level of suckiness. I love Thomson Elite setback seat posts - haven't ever had a problem with them. Glad you enjoyed the hiking in NW Colorado - you definitely weren't in KS anymore! There's always next year for Kowtown...
Busy couple of weeks so it took me forever to watch this. I ad anticipated the DNF was coming when I saw the Insta story you posted. Bummed that you got dropped by a mechanical. But, what absolutely beautiful scenery.
The point in the race where your seatpost broke is about the same point where I decided that I was just going to race the uphills and let everyone pass me on the downhills. A dropper post would have been nice for the gnarliest descent. Sorry about the DNF - come back next year!
Sounds like a smart approach! I had a dropper on my Gorilla Monsoon and didn't seem to use it a ton. Now that I've been riding a flat bar MTB with a dropper more regularly, I find myself missing it on my gravel bike at times.
This was my first gravel race and it was a great time, assuming you had a functional seat post. 😜 Sorry about your bad luck. I also did the 65 mile and was looking forward to seeing your video with the rowdy descent but will have to wait until next year. 🐮🤘
I use a dropper, and I only road the Calf course, hit a couple bumps where I thought the seat itself (Specialized Power) was in danger. Some rough (the Kowtown folks say 'rowdy') parts of that course!
I was thinking pretty hard about a dropper for this bike. I use one on my hardtail and love it, but for now I decided I wouldn't use enough to justify the cost. Wireless dropper is $$$$$
@@backofthegravelpack yeah the wireless one is big bucks, the wired ones aren't too bad though. I use it on my road bike now, the (now maligned) supertuck is perfectly legit with your butt on the seat. They are heavy though, if that matters.
I'm embarrassed to ask, especially as much as I love that bike, but I'm in a debate with my bike mechanic. He asked me why I had to have carbon when carbon and aluminum will go together. I told him I ride in extreme heat and extreme cold and the expansion of the two are different and I don't want to mix the two. Pulling a bike out of 74 degrees into the weather takes it toll I believe. Is your bike carbon or aluminum, oops never mind, it's steel right, dang I can't believe I forgot. Please do a video on the science of what you think happened and I will start researching deeper into it. Glad you kept up the spirits when things were looking down. You are an inspiration to me when I get into binds. Thanks for the video. By the way, I used your saying " gravitational advantage" at the track and it was a hit 😂. May God bless
Talking with that carbon repair dude, his thought was just a carbon failure, which happens at times I guess. I use a torque wrench when I tighten it down, but who knows.
Agree, I'm running only ti seat posts: Campy Chorus on my gravel bike Surly MS and Fairlight Faran 2.5), Salsa setback on MTB and an old TNT on my dirt touring rig. Steel or ti frames, but always use anti-seize paste and a torque wrench. They've survived thousands of miles flawlessly.
I was there. The whole huge climb I was thinking if the descent was this type of gravel it would be fun. It wasn't. At all. Sorry you had an issue, the scenery was 2nd to none for any ride I've done.
FWIW, I'm pretty sure you didn't do anything wrong if you used a torque wrench. I've broken lot's of carbon stuff in various sports over the years and anything that puts a point stress on a part will eventually break. Carbon seat posts last longer if you get one of the double bolt seat tube clamps, but they all fail if you ride them far enough. ( Or at least every one I've had has cracked ... )
So I guess we all need to add seat posts to our repair kits? That was a new one - thanks for discovering that for us!
Maybe carry two extras in case I break another one!
😂yep

Yea cheap like everything on a bike.....
Looks like a great place to cruise my ebike
There were plenty of great roads for sure
I’m sorry about the seat post issue, what a bummer. Liked your attitude and ability to make the best of it. Glad you didn’t get injured.
Thanks so much, and yes that could have been a pretty bad deal if it snapped completely!

There's always next year for Kowtown...
Thanks Karl. That Thomson is what I ended up getting to replace it, so hopefully we are all set there. And I will be back to Kowtown for sure!

It wasn't a bad day in the end, but I'm sad I didn't get to see the rest of the course. All the more motivation to go back next year!

Yea I've heard it was a bit of a rowdy descent, sorry to have missed it. No complaints though, I had a great day.
Bummer! But it could've been worse. At least you had great weather and wild animals to watch.
Haha or at least one of the two!

Nice, don't see many road bike dropper posts out there.
Pretty interesting in spite of the seat post issue.
Thanks Frank!
Stuff like “Son of a nutcracker” is why we’re friends 😂
I'm glad someone out there appreciates it haha

Im sure you replaced the post already, but if not i highly recommend Thomson
Appreciate that. That is what I ended up going with, think it is an elite with setback. So far, so good.
As a Clydesdale class rider I avoid carbon fiber parts. The small weight savings is not much when considering total system weight.
Yea you're not wrong, but just think how cool I look with a carbon post! Hard to overstate just how cool it is.
Me too, I really have to watch the intended use and weight limits. I trust carbon frames, but not so much for a lot of components.
Yea that probably makes the most sense.
Broke two Revel carbon posts in one year. Get a Ti one!
Yea thats what I'm leaning. Which Ti post are you using?

Yea rough descents are a bummer when you worked so hard to get up there aren't they?
Sorry about your seatpost, you missed some great views but also missed the monster climb... so it's kind of a push.
That descent looked.......exciting?
@@backofthegravelpack Ha! I was looking forward to a 6 mile down until we saw it was as chunky as it was. We lived though.
6 miles of arm pump is no fun.
Too bad you had the seat post issue🙁
Guess I'm just putting down way too much power? Jk not really.
Aluminum? 😄
Yea

Appreciate the info! I'll have to look into one of those seat tube clamps. For now I switched to alloy, one less thing to worry about.
