But isn´t that like the thing here? What makes you suck?!? :D I suck for wooden snares, they have that "extra warmth" that I want. But since I´m a sucker for that, I totally grasp that other drummers are suckers for something else. And I do feel a little hungry for a thin steel piccolo. Then I check it out (again and again) and I realize that it is an old, normal Ludwig I want. Just tuned very stiff. Gaaaaahhhh, gimme a break! :D

That $30 one really punched above its weight. I consistently liked it better than the two above it. The $60 sounded worst imo. If I could have any one of these for myself, I'd pick the $850 Pearls, but damn. Props to the cheap one.

Piccolo snares are soooo underrated, they have a ton of attack and minimal overtone due to their shallow shells, hints the punchy crack that they produce.

Good heads and tuning can make cheap drums sound pretty good. I know because for years I played cabaret circuits in cover bands with a generic piccolo snare (that was probably made from recycled soup cans for all I know) that I snagged from The Friend's discount bin for $25. Nice pop, not too clang-y.
Now if only he could've gone off the deep end and played snares from some more "boutique" brands. I got to gig for a week with a Brady snare (RIP Dave Herzer), and OMFG.

@@BroadwayJoe99 I bought a no-name drum set for about $100, snare for around $80, then bought nice thick heads, tuned and deadened all the parts and when I brought them to some gigs and shared with other bands, they were surprised how good they sounded and asked me what kit is this. And it was funny that I never could answer, cause I had no clue :D

I always think the key to a good sounding snare is not always the most expensive but how well you tune them, which brand and quality of skins you use and the acoustics in the room where the kit is placed.
Also how you play is a big one too.

It’s crazy how many snare variations there are, and how they sound. I have a mapex snare drum, and it sounds amazing, but have heard a lot of snare drums that sound better with my drum kit, but sound not so good with other drumkits, and it’s the same with my snare that sounds better with some other kits better that the one I have. I liked the ddrum but in the side by side comparisons I really liked the $150, $555, and $1,000 for the overall sound for the 3 type of beats.

The $30 one sounds like that trash can snare off the St. Anger album during the blast beat part in comparison to everything else. But you can definitely tell the difference in quality as you progressed through the different price points, especially with the Joey Signature up to the Reference One... You can easily tell that there's a huge difference in depth with those three. And to be fair, I'd still pay $666 for the Joey Snare along with a fuck tone of Joey's signature sticks both the Vik Firth and Pro Mark brands.

The 199 one is so good!
And I loved when you said "Drum beat numero uno!" in italian!

This is a great video for any aspiring drummers, To hear back to back different snares.
I closed my eyes for the last comparisons to see if I could hear a difference and I defiantly could, Most sounded fine and quite similar but the ones that stood out (in the not great way) were the 2 AFTER the $30 snare and the $1000.

Pearl masters maple ($850) by some margin imo. Have always loved that sound.

That $30 one is a steal and it actually sounded decent! Not sure how it would hold up in the long run though. The DDrum sounded great and the Slipknot one too!

On balance over all the styles, the Ddrum did it for me. It's diminishing returns above that, but the step up at that point from the cheaper drums is noticeable. I kind of discounted the Vox as it's really part of the bigger kit.

I thought they all sounded good until the side by side ha haa!!! I’d have to say the 3 pearls just sounded amazing. The last pearl sounded the best to my ears. Funny video too really enjoyed it🥁🔥

Can’t believe how much tuning and new heads really do. Tbh all of them sounded great and very usuable. Joey’s did end up taking the cake for me though.

I actually like the 150 option. The shallow ones had a bright snap, I liked that. The 199 option sounded dead, I'd say that's the worst of the bunch. Even the cheapest option beat that. The 1000 option is a little too bassy for my tastes, but the 850 option was nice all around.
So there's your rundown from a guitarists perspective. Though I might try drumming this coming year.

      @henriquee67 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

so cool to see different tastes, you know, i liked the 199 for not having so much harmonic roll off, in other words ''dead'', and the 1000 cuz it was lower frequencies, thats exactly opposite of you, but i agree with you in the 850 best for all around lmao, so cool

@@henriquee67 yeah, its real fun to see other people's rigs or kits and see them make all kinds of decisions you wouldn't and how/why they use it.

I think when I get working again, I might be looking to get one of those DDrum snares... though I guess I should probably finish the steel snare I'm building first... 3/8" thick steel!

I think this video really shows that good heads and proper tuning are the most important part of a drum sound.
There are differences in the comparison, but you could easily gig or record with any of those sounds. The most important factor in price/quality is probably how easy they are to tune etc.

I still love the ddrum Hybrid as much as I did back when it got released. Love the snappy sound, and the internal trigger is a great feature for studio work. Really wish I could afford a kit.

That was really interesting! I loved the back to back comparison at the end, so you really got to hear a direct comparison. I think my favorite was probably the Joey Jordison signature model 🙂 There was just something about it that felt punchier. (going back and realizing it's steel, makes sense) I think the Ddrum sounded pretty good too!

I get why some may dislike it but I prefer more of a slap or snap when it comes to snares, so my vote is for the ddrum hybrid. The fact that it comes with a built in trigger is also great.

I had a 14x8 FF snare in the original reference spec. What a beast. And surprisingly versatile.

I got my first kit back in 2001. It's a Tama Rockstar kit with the Starcast mounts; I still have it. Needless to say, the stock snare on a $500 kit is a bit lackluster. I found a Ludwig snare at Goodwill a couple years ago. It had a little bit of rust on the steel and the snare ribbon was missing, but the head was still in good shape and not worn. Looked like it was older and barely used. I cleaned it up, added a snare wire, and put it in place of the stock snare from the Tama kit. The sound is so much nicer and I only paid $15 for the snare and $20 for a new snare wire. I looked up the snare online, and from what I could find, it's worth a lot more than the money I put into it. Kind of wild to consider that it may potentially be worth more than the rest of the kit.
